Q&A for Sugar Apple Fairy Tale

I’m sorry that I took away the last two Q&As/posts after finding out some (possible) misleading/mistaken information. The information I posted is from my memory, Japanese Wikipedia of this series, some materials on hand and reviews/spoilers (for each volume) from Japanese readers. To give specific answers I need to check the novel again so please bear with me ;_; Back then I only checked out scenes with Shall and Ann (￣▽￣;) I’m happy to have your questions so please don’t hesitate to ask me. I am really started to become invested in Sugar Apple Fairy Tale, but it’s REALLY difficult when it comes to finding out information about the series from the light novels. There is hardly any information, but after much digging I found out a good bit of what’s to come from the rest of the light novels.

!Spoiler Warning!

The original manga series ended by the second volume, but recently since late 2021, a new manga adaption has started and is covering the entire series. Also the light novel is officially being translated into English.

By the end of Volume 3, Ann has fulfilled her goal and becomes a Silver Sugar Master.

Ann and Shall become a couple, but it’s hard to tell when exactly they become official. I’m fairly sure it’s Volume 11.

A fairy called Rafeal will play an important role in the future and has a connection to the fairy king.

Ann is killed but brought back to life, but in the process, loses all her skills and knowledge as a silver sugar sculpture and has to relearn all over again by scratch.

Mythril’s life nears it’s end in the middle of the series until his life is spared. However, he is no longer a water fairy and becomes a light fairy instead.

The King declares equal rights between humans and fairies, but on the condition that Shall officially present the first silver sugar to the lord of the kingdom. (The King of the Fairies I suppose?)

Ann and Shall are confirmed to have gotten married by the end of the series, but before that they were separated for a year. Shall had to battle with Rafeal, but in the process, they fell off a cliff and were presumed dead, but instead survived and lost their memories. Upon regaining them, Shall and Ann were reunited and tied the knot.

Sugar Apple Fairy Tale season 1 ends with such a big cliffhanger for everyone, and there are not many people knowing about this series since it was more than 10 years ago. As an old reader, I hope to offer some clarification for those who need it.

Sugar Apple Fairy Tale was originally a light novel series and got picked up by Aquascans, translated by Icarus Bride, unfortunately the project was dropped with only 2 volumes finished: https://aquascans.wordpress.com/novels/sugar-apple-fairy-tale-novel/

On Aquascans tumblr, if you search using “sugar apple fairy tale” tag, you can still find the illustrated pictures used in the novel. The illustrator and character design is Aki-sensei. Back then I fancied this novel for the illustration since I’ve liked her drawing style for a long time ago.

Then the novel was promoted with one-volume manga drawn by Yukimura Alto. She is the author of the shoujo-manga: Colette wa Shinu Koto ni Shita (Colette and Hades)

It also got 2 drama CDs with Shall voiced by Sakurai Takahiro and Ann by Okubo Rumi. I personally like this version better than the anime. Shall is more mischievous and Ann is calmer in the novel and drama CD.

Spoilers:

Shall will come back to Ann in the next volume (or in season 2 anime). Later in the series he declares his love for her and they kiss. One fun fact is Ann keeps counting the number of kiss they share, but when she is asleep, Shall still kisses her without her being aware of. So he finds it amusing as she incorrectly counts the number later on.

There are two other fairies who are stone-brothers to Shall. Shall Fen Shall was born from obsidian, Raphal Fen Raphal from opal, and Eril Fen Eril from diamond. Shall, Raphal and Eril were from three stones inlaid in the late fairy king’s sword by himself. They are the candidates for the next fairy king.

Mythril will be dying because of his short life span (born from water) but saved by Eril, though he loses his water-control ability. Ann was stabbed by Raphal and saved by Eril, however she loses all her confections making skill and has to start training again.

Raphal fights Shall; they both go missing and lose memory. However, Shall retrieves his memory and comes back to Ann. They get married and the series ends here. The recently published volume is after their marriage.

It’s a pity that at the time I knew about this series, half of them had been published and I missed most of the extra short stories sold exclusively and limitedly. TT_TT

I think as the head coach 塾頭 of Shieikan, there should be more scenes of Okita teaching kenjutsu or dealing with people from other dojos who come to challenge 道場破り /pick a fight with Shieikan dojo. Beside, it’s nice if the CD portrays him going to other dojos for “degeiko” 出稽古 xD That sounds more like a normal life that a 17 year-old kenjutsu practitioner should have. Depiction of bullying is okay, but focusing on it as his main issue is a bit pathetic. I believe he is a pretty short-tempered character, which makes a long-suffering Okita (over many years) kind of unexpected to me (even if he has borne it for Kondo-san). However, with him bearing such kind of bullying treatment for years, his explosive rage when his beloved birds are killed is reasonable (and can be acceptable). He didn’t know how to deal with his anger/frustration and ended up venting on her…? まあ、なんとなくだけど…

So Okita in Hakuouki got measles in 1862 (assuming from the historical measles epidemic in 1862) while Okita in Wasurena didn’t xD

Okita Souji and The Measles Epidemic of 1862

I started watching the time-travel drama Jin recently, and it prodded my brain to make a connection I hadn’t before. 

1862, the year before the Shinsengumi headed for Kyoto, was a terrible year for Japan. Two major epidemics: cholera and measles, swept through the country.

One of the measles cases was a young Okita Souji, who spent months recovering from the disease. He was 18 or 20 (the latter is the age Hakuouki uses), and became ill during the seventh month of the year.  During the time he was on bedrest, Kondou famously visited him every day to read to him from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. 

Okita wasn’t the only famous figure of the era to come down with measles. I already knew that my favourite Choshu troublemaker and future military commander, Takasugi Shinsaku, caught the measles in Nagasaki while preparing to join the 1862 mission to Shanghai. Unlike Okita, Takasugi recovered quickly and continued on to Shanghai soon after.

In areas where records are available, about 63 percent off the population seem to have got the measles in 1862.

江戸時代には、白米は侍身分でないと、食べられないことだそうです（日本語先生から聞いた）。白米を炊く時はきれいに洗ってからすることになっているので、栄養が大分取られてしまう。そのため、侍達、特に高い地位にいる方が弱くなってきた（そうです）。その時代、白米に比べて、玄米は高級なものではなかった。

で、沖田さんはどんな米を食べたのか？ 考えてみれば、 試衛館のときも新撰組のときも、みんなは貧乏だし、白米が食べられていたのかな？たぶんたまに食べたけど、主に玄米を食べていたよね？剣術がうまい沖田さんだからこそ、玄米を食べていたはずのだと思う！ ハハハ ＾▽＾ヾ

Finally got my CD after a bit of confusion as to when they were going to ship it. Arrived in a rather battered looking envelope this morning. It’s a day late but I’m happy with it :D

Scans from Sou Sou’s Soubou Sangokushi CD booklet and all that since I got my copy. None of the illustrations are new though, which is one thing I find a bit sad about the CDs.

And my monthly dose of Soubou Sangokushi has arrived~ :D Compared to the previous two I’m not as familiar with Shuu Yu’s character but I enjoyed the samples so I’m looking forward to listening to the CDs ^^

Booklet for Chouun’s Soubou Sangokushi CD. Missed the delivery because I wasn’t at home yesterday but finally got my CD this morning. It came in a box big enough to fit 20 CDs for some reason ._. In any case I’m looking forward to it since I quite like Morikawa Toshiyuki’s voice. :)
