One thing I like about The Apothecary Diaries is how all the lighthearted moments in the story coexist with the horrifying cruelty of the world where it takes place. Maomao is a lovable goofball, the inciting event of the series is her being kidnapped and sold into slavery. Jinshi is a total fool for Maomao, she catches his attention while he's investigating the death of an infant. Their antics are mostly centered around the rear palace, which is full of women harboring justified resentment over the previous emperor preying on young girls. The tonal shifts aren't jarring at all. There's joy and fun and general silliness even when the world around them is a pretty dark place.

as much as i like the apothecary diaries, and maomao's character, this trend i'm seeing of people being like "finally! a female MC in anime who's well-written and doesn't suck! This Has Never Been Seen Before." is irritating me beyond belief. sorry, but well-written, complex and iconic female characters have always existed in anime. your inability to watch anything except the most mainstream dudebro-y shounen anime written by men who hate women sounds like a YOU problem.
