there are many services out there that support and help technicians that are working in companies. these services can be used if you've had an accident at work and the company will not cover you. some of these services are: BECTU, EQUITY and GMB (Britain's general union). BECTU is a uk media and entertainment trade union which covers film, independent production, theatre and the arts, leisure and digital media
BECTU - bectu provides a variety of services such as:
negotiating pay, contracts and conditions with employers

EQUITY -  equity provides a variety of services for you such as:

advises you on work opportunities, making claims when suffered an injury, providing work gear/tools.
these services offer these services with an additional fee per month or year. this gives you the chance to become a member and cover's you if a company has treated you unfairly or will pay you for health insurance if you have an accident or their equipment is not functional to a standard.
these unions all work together in some ways to try and support their communities. they attend conferences and conventions telling new people what they can offer.
BECTU offers an event known as "the freelancers fair 2015". these give individuals seminars, workshops and one-to-one advice sessions that help freelancers find work and opportunities that will benefit them in the future.

Unit 3: Criteria 1
A great way to finding Job opportunities and experience in theatre is searching job finding websites such as theatrejobs.com, linkedin.com and stagejobspro.com. Here you can find a vast range of roles that are involved in theatre and other live events.
these roles consist of:
Performers;
Actors - the roles of an actor consist of performing as a character in a dramatic or comical way. Actors perform in film, TV, theatre, adverts and music videos. behind every actor is a director, who tell them how to perform, what to perform, and the way to perform. this is how actors and directors interrelate.
Musicians - a musician's roles consist in creating and/or performing music to an audience or recording in studios. Musicians will compose and perform various genres of music, some tend to stay in one type of style i.e bands. some bands will evolve their style of music to fit them or try something new. some musicians will work as freelance artists, working with others to perform pieces, or work as salaried members of; orchestras, theatre companies, bands and choirs. musician can also be the roles of composers, instrumentalists and/or singers. singers and musical directors will interrelate with each other by working on pieces together. the Musical director would tell the musicians what to perform, when and how in a live event.
singers - a singer's roles consist of singing songs on stage, radio, television and music videos. a singer must memorise singing routines, lyrics and singing lyrics in the right sections of a song. a singer or vocalist will work solo, in bands or as an ensemble depending on what genre of music and where they will perform i.e. on stage as a band, as an opera singer in theatre or as a choir in a musical event. singers can compose their music and/or help when recording pieces in studios. just like musicians, singers can perform various genres of music depending on what they like or if they prefer to stay in one style. singers will seek out and research into finding music to help them compose and find their suitable genre of music. there are various styles of vocals and singing depending on the type of music. for example, rap is normally associated in hip-hop and grime but is frequently used in rock and metal. this is known as nu-metal. an example of bands that perform this style of music are Korn, Limp Bizkit, Deftones.
Dancers - a dancer's roles consist of performing to an audience in various styles. these styles include; musical theatre, contemporary, ballet, ballroom, street and breakdancing. some dancers perform as solo artists or as a company, depending on what event and style they are performing for. a dancer must be very fit and dedicated to dancing if they want to have a successful career.
 depending on the size of a theatre or live event, there are many roles for a technical crew. for example, a small scale live event would have just one or two lighting technicians who will rig, program and operate lights. for a full/large scale event, you would have a chief LX, LX 1,2 and 3, Riggers, operators, followspot operators etc..
Technical;
Lighting technician - a lighting technician rigs lighting, haze/fog machines, programmes desks and operates shows. in a small scale event you might only just have one but for large scale you would have about 3-5. lighting technicians will follow designs of a performance from either themselves or from a lighting designer, depending on the scale of the event. lighting technicians also have the duty to maintain and manage the equipment and fill out paperwork.
Chief LX - a chief electrician has many jobs such as supervising the other electricians during a production or show, running plans for power distribution to the event and running cabling, patch the lighting board for a show if there is not light board operator and sorting and buying resources and equipment such as gels, gobos and lights that the lighting will want to request.

Class Structure
Lower Class: lower class citizens had numbers of titles including craftsmen, builders and engineers and apprentices. these were at the top of this category as they all had the skills and knowledge, but paid at low rates. going down you would have sailors, these jobs were highly dangerous but the pay better than your average worker.  at the bottom end of this category are the paupers, homeless and vagrants. these people would work in factories, workhouses and ship yards, which were difficult, tiring jobs that lasted for endless hours each day.
Middle Class: this class' occupations consisted of servants, lawyers and doctors, low ranking military officers, merchants and the clergy. The clergy were very prestige in this structure as they had more money and power than most occupations in this class, apart from wealthy merchants.
The Gentry: This class consisted of the powerful and rich of the kingdom. Barons, Dukes, Marquises, MPs, earls and viscounts. These people lived easy, grandeur lives. Going to parties, socialising at parks and clubs.

to modernise my show I came up with the idea of two groups (israelians and Palestinians). the israelians sent an undercover agent to infiltrate the palestians to take over. with this he becomes relatively close to a female palestian agent who is becoming very friendly and open towards him, sharing their secrets and plans. the Palestinian agent has been given the task to find out information of an agent from the israelians, who might be working undercover and to be rid of him. the israelian starts to fall in love with this woman, but knowing that she is out to find him. the undercover agent pleads with his superiors to not harm her. to leave her out of the conflict..

unit 79 - discussing with directors and company
as a designer, your ideas must be shared to the directors so that they can see what they want and point out anything that could be altered. it helps to converse and discuss with the directors so you can ask what key structures and areas could be. its also a good way to discuss the style of the structures.
during production meetings is the chance to show the company and tech teams your designs and eventually the final model box piece that you have created. this is where you can get some constructive criticism from both sides and allow the teams to ask questions that could interfere with their department such as putting a light in a certain area and whether it will be useful or if an actor can reach an area to perform or be allowed to perform on top of a structure.

Unit 67 - Criteria 2
this is my lighting design plan for the show 'Shelf Life'. The lighting only consisted of generic lights (non-movables). In the rig i also added a mirror ball and two 'birdies'.

Unit 68 - Criteria 5 My role was lighting operator for the show "Newspaper Project". During each performance, I was told my cues by my DSM as to when lights were going to be changed or if I was to busk lights during a scene in the show. I was able to perform this with no support or guidance and was fully confident when operating that show.

Unit 82 - Criteria 2
• Manage costume construction staff with confidence and efficiency For the theatre show 'Oh what a lovely war' we wrote out tasks for each other to things done as quickly and efficiently as possible. For example, If we needed labels written out and cut to size, one assistant would deal with that, whilst ticking off the list of names of actors for each costume that needed a label. to sew the labels in we would get maybe 2-3 people to do this, working on industrial or even domestic sowing machines. Since using the sowing machines for some time, this was performed with confidence since we knew what we was doing, was able to stitch them with ease, and if problems occurred, such as the thread ran out or the snapped, we could fix and repair with any needs of assistance. In my own personal opinion, I wanted to make sure we had a steady flow of work with each person working on different jobs. I would ask people what jobs they're most comfortable/capable of doing, and say they should do this. But would also ask to swap around to challenge myself and others with different tasks they felt not strongly about. We would make sure for the actors that if they were using rehearsal skirts, shoes and hats, we would tell them to use the sign in/out sheet so that we could keep track of what could go missing or break and be quick to react to it and deal with the problem at hand.

Unit 82 - Criteria 1
With managing materials and equipment for making the fins of the mermaid dresses in 'far from over', i had to ensure i used the right equipment, working properly such as using the industrial sowing machines. Once taught, i was confident to fix the machine without hesitant. I ensured that i used the right scissors for the type of material i.e i would not use fabric scissors to cut things such as paper, reasons for this is that it blunts the blades and is difficult to sharpen them back. You would not use general scissors to cut fabric since general scissors are not sharp enough and not sharpened in the certain to cut through the material, if you was to use those type of scissors, you merely fray the fabric, causing rips and such into fabric, which later on will cause problems for the future. I would ensure to use pins to hold pieces of fabric together. In this instance, when i had cut 5 pieces of net at a metre each, i would pin the ends to each other, and use the industrial machine to stitch them together, ensuring that i back stitch both ends so the stitching does not fall out.
