Skara Brae /ˈskærə ˈbreɪ/ is a stone-built Neolithic settlement, located on the Bay of Skaill in the parish of Sandwick, on the west coast of Mainland, the largest island in the Orkney archipelago of Scotland. It consisted of ten clustered houses, made of flagstones, in earthen dams that provided support for the walls; the houses included stone hearths, beds, and cupboards.
The site was occupied from roughly 3180 BC to around 2500 BC and is Europe's most complete Neolithic village. Skara Brae gained UNESCO World Heritage Site status as one of four sites making up "The Heart of Neolithic Orkney". Older than Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids of Giza, it has been called the "Scottish Pompeii" because of its excellent preservation.

Wanted to sketch the "Invincible" ever since I first saw her entering the port in Stromness. Never got around to it until we boarded the ferry to return home. Took the chance when I spotted her from the sun deck.

Such a beautiful and isolated place. The contrast between the roughness of the landscape, crashing waves and stunning turquoise water with white beaches was too inspiring to resist painting on location.
Many thanks to my wife for all the patience ❤️

Coralline algae are red algae in the order Corallinales. They are characterized by a thallus that is hard because of calcareous deposits contained within the cell walls. The colors of these algae are most typically pink, or some other shade of red, but some species can be purple, yellow, blue, white, or gray-green. Coralline algae play an important role in the ecology of coral reefs. Sea urchins, parrot fish, and limpets and chitons (both mollusks) feed on coralline algae.

Ulex europaeus, the gorse, common gorse, furze or whin, is a species of flowering plant native to Western Europe.
Growing to 4.5 metres
tall, it is an evergreen shrub. The young stems are green, with the shoots and leaves modified into green spines, 1–3 centimetres long. Young seedlings produce normal leaves for the first few months; these are trifoliate, resembling a small clover leaf.
