Now more than ever, cherish those around you. Check up on those who aren't. (and make the best of whoever you're stuck with) La Boca, Buenos Aires, Dec 2019. — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2QHayVO

Rang in 2020 with a couple beers, wine, some empanadas and a microwave meal from the corner store (mainly because every restaurant there was fully reserved and I'm not responsible enough to prepare for that). Sat out on a bench to watch the crowds of people flood into Puerto Madero to celebrate. Music was loud and people were dancing on the street. Kids were armed with fireworks and one threw his towards me when he got scared of another firework. People shooting fireworks towards boats full of people and malfunctioning fireworks shooting street level into the cabs. Festive with a touch of chaos, just my speed. Hope you all had a great (and safe) night. Happy New Year. — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/35f4wQL

Aug 25, 2019. A smoky scene on Sunday as volleys of tear gas are shot towards the protestors right outside a shopping centre in Tsuen Wan. Riot police kicks away one of the canisters that is returned back to them by protestors. — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2LGC9Ej

On the first few hopeful hours of PolyU on Nov 17, a protestor wields a shield with a grim foreshadowing of how the night would ultimately "end", eventually spanning over the course of 12 days. During the siege, many have been arrested while some have hid and escaped early on. Many others surrendered and some rappelled down a bridge to be rescued by motorcyclists waiting underneath. A few attempted to escape through the sewage only to be arrested afterwards and some were escorted out by paramedics due to mental or physical health. A handful have stayed the whole duration of the siege living off of diminishing supplies as the extended lockdown further affecting their paranoia and overall mental state. Police have since arrested 1377 protestors because of the PolyU protests (810 while leaving campus and 567 nearby), 318 were minors under 18 and had their identification registered and possibly face consequences later. 12 days later, the siege has finally ended on Nov 29. — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/34CdsQH

[Long Read] As I turned my back, I heard a few shots let off behind me. Several smoke trails shot into the air and flew over my head towards the crowd not far ahead. Shit - I had a tank top, shorts and no gas mask nor goggles. In hindsight, I was highly underdressed and naively underestimated the tear gas I'd soon familiarize myself with. Two metal canisters landed about 10m in front of me with smoke quickly filling the area. I thought, "Ok, I'll just hold my breath and sprint through the cloud". Before I even got there, the burn immediately reached my eyes, and within seconds I could no longer see. I forced them open slightly in the thick of the cloud to navigate around the items on the ground. As I struggled with the obstacles, oxygen depleted and I was forced to gasp for air. A big gasp instantly burned and constricted my airway making it near impossible to breathe. Barely seeing and fighting for air, my body was failing me. I managed a few more meters before a couple of volunteer medics spotted me and immediately rinsed my eyes with saline as they rushed me away. They stayed with me amidst the chaos of the protestors running away and the police approaching - one even offered me an extra mask from his bag (which I found out is quite expensive), telling me to take it if I keep documenting at the frontlines. My sight restored soon after rinsing, my breathing stabilized (with slight stinging from the residual smoke), and my skin still burned for a while from exposure. Had a third canister landed ahead of the other two in front of me, or if the medics didn't find me, I could imagine the outcome could've been different. — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2HpIF02

Got a chance to see @simuliu at the #goldopen of @thefarewell screening in Toronto last night. It was amazing to see the turn out and how many people came out to support their work with @awkwafina and @thumbelulu. In this era of inclusivity and representation, it's good to see the Asian community coming forward into the mainstream. I know growing up here, I never really saw any faces I could really relate to, and when there were, they would play heavily into stereotypical and very minor roles. I'm glad we're finally breaking out of that, slowly but surely. And of course, a big congratulations on the big news with @marvelstudios and the upcoming role as Shang Chi! — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2LE5II7
