Anon as someone who had similar trouble and also got advice from @huggingtentacles

She's right pattern recognition is 100% the deciding factor over reaction time. I eventually ditched shields bc I wanted to 2hand a hammer. But if you do want to use the shield early on while still developing the skill to able to switch to other play styles later if you want then instead of using it to tank the boss use it to keep yourself alive while you learn the patterns in the first couple tries then focus on dodging once you understand the boss.

That's what got me through the early stages while still giving me the confidence to put the shield down when I wanted to try something new.

I really struggle with the reaction time for dodging bosses, I can stay out of their range decently but I have trouble punishing their openings because I'm afraid of not pulling back in time and getting comboed. Do you think a Shield would be a good idea to let me take a hit by blocking if I linger too long? or would that just be an early game bandaid and make things harder for me down the line?

TLDR I'm not confident at dodging, are shields viable late game or do I just have to "get good"?

Shields are strong and viable throughout the whole game and you can beat every boss using a shield. But you WILL be creating problems for yourself if you grow bored of it and try other weapons.

The difference between using two different weapons with and without a shield is that if you pick up a different weapon after not using a shield, you will have an easier time picking it up. If you ditch the shield at any point it's like learning how to play the game again, meanwhile if you just get good, you can swap between setups without an issue.

So if your goal is to just get through the game to see the final cutscene, and you wanna do it with the least amount of effort, using a shield is very viable. However, if you want to experience as much of the game as possible, try more builds and playstyles and more weapons than just a shield+poking weapon, you gotta learn how to dodge.

It's not actually that hard, you don't need reaction time, you need pattern recognition. My reaction time is below average and I'm cracked at this game. You built pattern recognition through repetition with moderately frequent breaks, it's like building muscle.

And if you really enjoy shields, nothing is stopping you from picking one up later down the line

Really depends on your definition of doomed. The man physically cannot die, but if I have to deal with the consequences of his actions then I'm not exactly in for a good time either and I absolutely would not be able to pretend to be him so I'm gonna have to deal with his family and his weird toxic situationship shapeshifter "pet" human.

So... Long term I'm fine but immediate reaction is panicked screaming.
