happy (late) new years everyone! i hope everyone had a great start to the new year. i'm ringing it in by recommending some of my favourite nalu fics of 2023! hope you enjoy!
Spring by bumblebeehugs Natsu and Lucy take a break from walking on the way home from a mission.
Summer by bumblebeehugs Natsu suffers from the summer heat for the first time - everything is Lucy's fault, according to him.
Autumn by bumblebeehugs Happy takes a moment to observe his two best friends.
Winter by bumblebeehugs Lucy has the worst morning known to human kind, until Natsu comes to her rescue.
i would say all of this, but i don't wanna ruin the moment by luckymio As he sat on his bed, only the sounds of his fingers clicking against the controller, the monsters in his game groaning, even though the game was paused, and the flipping of pages, he realized that he couldnât remember a time where he wasnât in love with Lucy. It had always been him and her, Natsu and Lucy, them. Always them.
night drives by luckymio Those nights were magic. For him, they were magic. Lucyâs face in the side mirror, her eyes gentle, slightly dazed, and trained on the blurry houses and apartments. She would sing softly, close to a whisper, her voice almost drowned out from the sound of tire against pavement. But he heard it, because he never focused on the music, because he only focused on her.
Wise Men Say by Irrelevan in which Natsu is sick and Lucy finds out that she doesn't mind taking care of him actually.
tolerate it by Nostromo13 Jude has watched his daughter grow from the sidelines of newspaper articles and Sorcerer Weeklys, only catching glimpses of her life through her guild and her career as an author. After reconnecting with her, he now has to see where he fits in his now 25 (technically 32) year old daughter's life. Set in a timeline where Jude didnât die during the seven years.
Time passes by quickly (When you belong somewhere) by Nihilistic_Nomad Itâs rather intriguing, how much a personâs life can change in just one year.
Happy Endings by bumblebeehugs What Natsu knew about families had been an ever-changing subject for as long as he could remember. Yet somehow, he found himself free from these wonders one day.
My heart is heavy (With fearful wonderings) by Nihilistic_Nomad Itâs always in the quieter moments that her mind wanders.
Gave him her heart by bumblebeehugs Lucy worries about what to get Natsu for his birthday, not knowing how ridiculously easy it actually is.
Impossible Love by natsudragneelswh0re "Someone once asked me what it felt like to love you. They might as well have asked me to describe the taste of water." -JL
a thousand red roses by natsudragneelswh0re Natsu and Lucy come back from a mission that puts pressure on not only them, but also their relationship. There only seems to be one option to resolve their conflict, but the 'only option' seems to be different to either party.
The days inbetween by bumblebeehugs Lucy falling asleep somewhere and Natsu carrying her to bed.
Cymorth by Nostromo13 Following the Alvarez war, Natsu has to come to terms with a new reality.
ready (for a misunderstanding) by ssukidesu When Bisca and Alzack have another baby, a passing comment from Lucy turns Natsu's world upside down.
a dragon's habits by Poteto Natsu is a dragon and as such he needs to have power, a hoard and⊠what else do dragons do? Why, they kidnap princesses of course!
Marry The Sea by Nostromo13 Usually Natsu felt like he knew everything when it came to Lucy. He knows she loves him but now it's come time to propose and he's not so sure if marriage is something she wants.
Call Me By My Name by StaleCupcakes524 "You're..." Natsu took in the sight of her as his eyes widened. The pretty brown eyes he'd already been watching, supple pink lips that had released those wonderful laughs, braided golden hair that reached near to the ground, and long, pointed ears poking past the strands. "a fae," he finished. She nodded, ears twitching nervously. "Do not tell me your name."

we should just kiss like real people do ship: natsu dragneel x lucy heartfilia all the fear and the fire of the end of the world, happens each time a boy falls in love with a girl. happens great, happens sweet, happily, i'm unfazed here too. or: a series of interconnected one-shots following Natsu and Lucy's budding relationship through the letters of the alphabet. ao3
chapter 1. a - aquarium
The glass fogged up with the warmth of their breaths as their noses pressed up against the barrier separating them and the fish. Thereâs a sign not even five feet from them that states in bold letters PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH THE GLASS, but Lucy simply assumed they had either ignored it, or saw it and took it as a challenge to make as much skin-to-glass contact as they possibly could.
"Youâre not supposed to touch the glass, you know," she scolded, as if her pointing it out would stop them.
The two of them were getting weird looks, and they were definitely going to get in trouble if they didnât stop any time soon, but Lucy didnât have it in her to reprimand them too much because it was honestly kind of endearing.
"If I didnât know any better, I would say you two had never seen a fish in your lives up until now."
She wasnât too far off in her observation; the aquarium theyâre in is certainly larger than anything Natsu and Happy had seen in their lives. Every tank was filled to the brim with different exotic-looking fish, the likes of which the two had never seen before, and by the looks of things, it seemed as though they were trying to burn the image of every new creature into their brains.
Even though she had lived in Crocus for a year, Lucy had never been to the local aquarium herself. Sheâd known of its existence, of course; it was a big tourist draw for the city outside of Grand Magic Games season, but she had never felt compelled to visit herself until now. At the time, she thought it might have dredged up memories of her partner that she wasnât in the right frame of mind to deal with. Going there would have only reminded her how much he and Happy would have adored a place like this.
It seemed that her assumption was correct based on the way the both of them ooh-ed and ahh-ed at each passing fish.
Deciding that her attempts to stop them from trying to become one with the glass were futile, Lucy instead joined their side in hopes of figuring out what all the fuss was about. Admittedly, she understood their fascination. Coral and creatures of every colour practically glowed under the blue lights, flowing through the water with ease. They neednât worry about anything, perhaps unaware of their enthusiastic observers as they continued to glide along in their inclosure. It was calming, borderline mesmerising to watch.
"This is so cool," Natsu declared, drawing Lucyâs attention away from the water and over to him and his wide grin. "Thanks for bringinâ us here, Lucy."
What had begun as his typical, unrestrained Natsu grin had softened into a gentle, genuine smile, going all the way up to his eyes, where he looked at her with all the adoration in the world.
"Yeah, itâs no problem," she affirmed, trying to keep herself from melting into an ooey, gooey mess right in front of him.
He didnât give her much time to recuperate before her hand was in his, and he was dragging her over to the next tank that caught his eye in a not-so-romantic reminder that this was technically a date. That reminder was affirmed when they finally made it to the exhibit Natsu had his eyes on, and he still kept her hand held safely in his own, his thumb dragging across the back of her hand in an act of silent affection.
While his gaze was fixed on the new species of fish that filled the overhead tank, Lucyâs eyes trailed down to see where their bodies met, fingers intertwined together.
It wasnât anything new; theyâd been together romantically for several months at this point, and theyâd been best friends for even longer. It was a comfortable transition, easing into it so naturally as though fate itself had placed them together.
She liked it like this.
She liked being best friends who went on silly aquarium dates where they held hands in the shark tunnel.
She liked watching his fascination with all the sights and sounds.
She liked him.
A lot.
In a soft moment of adoration, she squeezed his hand.
He squeezed hers back.
Looking back up at him, his eyes were still fixed on the display, watching a stingray glide past overhead. He let out a soft breath of awe, and she, in turn, breathed out a gentle giggle that captured his attention.
"What?" He asked, his attention now on her as he gazed down at her.
"Nothing," Lucy hummed, her lips pursed together to hide her amusement at this softer, cuter side of Natsu.
He wasnât given the chance to interrogate her further before Happyâs voice called out to them from further in the tunnel, beckoning the pair to his spot.
"Wo-oah! Guys! Come look at this!"
His little paws pressed against the glass, clearly having not learned his lesson from before, as he watched a shark pass him by.
"Look! A real-life shark!" He exclaimed, practically shaking with excitement. "Oooohhh, Iâve never tried shark before, but I bet itâs so yummy~"
Lucy rolled her eyes, unsurprised that this was what had been on his mind the whole time.
"Nah, the skins probably too tough to get through," Natsu dismissed.
"You probably shouldnât be talking so loud about eating the animals," Lucy added. "Besides, I think a shark is more likely to eat you," she pointed out.
Her words caused Happy to shudder slightly in fear, and Natsu chortled at his reaction, his laughter causing her heart to skip a beat in her chest.
He and Happy continued to chat away about the display of fish, with Natsuâs hand never leaving hers. Lucy held little interest in what they were talking about; their words little more than background noise in her head as she watched on. The blue and green hues of the water surrounding them rippled against the floor, the colour distorted light, defining Natsuâs features as he spoke.
It wasnât until Happy flew off to follow a particularly tasty-looking fish that Natsu noticed she was staring.
"Are you having fun?" She asked, trying to divert attention from the fact that she had just been caught.
"Are you kiddinâ? This is the best date ever," he grinned.
Something akin to pride swelled up in her chest. Perhaps it wasnât the most romantic of dates, but Natsu was happy, and that was enough for her.
He looked at her for a moment, and almost as if he had read her thoughts, he brought his hand up to cradle her cheek before dipping down to join his lips with her own. It was short and soft but didnât fail to leave her breathless, just like he always did.
"There, that romantic enough for ya?" He asked, barely making it through the sentence before Lucyâs hands were on his cheeks, pulling him down for another.

i think a lot about that one dream sequence natsu has of lucy in the white dress and smiling and bright and beautiful. on the brink of death, he sees his friends and his family and then he sees lucy. lucy, bathed in light. lucy, laughing and tugging him along. lucy, lucy, lucy.

natsu and lucy sparring post-war at the guild gym and they kinda gather an audience cause of how long theyâve been fighting. lucyâs hair is out of her ponytail and natsuâs bangs are in his eyes. theyâve gotten to the point where theyâre playing dirty. consistently taunting each other and absolute foul play. at some point lucy pins natsu on his back with his hands above his head and natsu fuckin headbutts her to get outta it. there are faint scales around natsuâs eyes, the room feels like itâs 90 degrees. everytime lucy changes stardress its nearly blinding and it seems like thereâs bits of stardust clinging to her.
the tension is fucking palpable. everyone feels it. people are wolf whistling whenever one of them pins the other down. natsu gets lucy in a headlock and whispers something in her ear and erza feels downright scandalized. she considers covering wendyâs poor eyes.

in another life ship: natsu dragneel x lucy heartfilia summary: There's a short list of things that Natsu expects when he's dragged along to a museum exhibit, but a fateful encounter with the woman in the painting is not part of his plans. inspired by this piece by @jmoart214 ⥠ao3

When Natsu heard the word museum, his brain conjured up images of giant, towering dinosaur bones, almost draconic in their intimidating structure. That was all it took to get a yes out of him when Erza had requested (see: demanded) that he accompany her to the opening of Reedusâs exhibit. She just so conveniently left out that there were to be no dinosaur bones in sight.
Heâd gotten bored after a good half hour of standing around looking at the same few paintings and sculptures, and Erza, in her endless compassion, had given Natsu permission to wander the rest of the gallery, under the condition that he didnât cause a ruckus and kept his hands to himself. He, of course, had no plans to; some of the stuff here looked expensive, and an ass whooping from Erza was not something he was actively searching for today. Instead, he simply meandered around the building, briefly looking at this and that to keep himself occupied while he waited on his friends so he could leave.
While he took his time looking around, he didnât find himself enthralled by any of the paintings hung on the walls. He never quite "got" art; didnât understand how people found themselves so moved by it or why they would build entire museums for it. Most pieces were instead dismissed in his mind before moving onto the next, glancing over them quickly before categorising them into either good, bad, or donât care, most of which fell into the latter.
Passing by another stuffy portrait of some king, soldier, or something else (he didnât care much to check), Natsu moved on to the next painting, ready to be about as unimpressed with it as the last four or five, but for the first time he felt himself drawn to the piece hung before him.
It was weird. Heâd never felt that way about art before, but perhaps what made that even weirder was the subject of the painting. Within the ornate frame sat a woman, no older than him, with golden locks flowing like rivers down her back and a pure white dress draped across her soft, milky skin. Her gaze was fixated to the side, looking at something he could not see, but even still, her chocolate eyes still beckoned him towards her, and he submitted to her will, standing there gaping at the painting like an absolute moron.
"According to textbooks of Fiorian history, she was the lover of the Second Draconian Prince in the 18th century," came a voice from behind him.
He whipped his head around to be met with the owner of the voice approaching his sideâa girl his age, her blonde hair held up in two blonde pigtails while the rest of it hung loose around her shoulders.
"They say that she was extremely beautiful; nobles and kings travel far and wide just to catch a glimpse of her beauty," she continued, her eyes still fixated on the painting.
He wasnât sure if she was talking directly to him, but seeming as there was no one else around, he could only assume she was.
"Yeah, I guess I can see that," he replied, looking back at the painting before them.
"The story of the nymph and her lover was a romantic but tragic one," she began to speak again. "The prince loved her so much that it became his undoing. He discovered her lifeless body amidst a war their nation was fighting, and it awoke the demon seed inside of him that would lead him to kill his brother and eventually killing himself, not being able to imagine a life without his beloved."
The strangerâs words stunned him into silence for a moment. Never would he have expected such a dark story from such a peaceful-looking painting.
"So, wait, was he a dragon, or was he a demon?" He asked, finding himself compelled to know more of the story, unsatisfied with what little information he was left with.
"He was both," she replied, acknowledging him for the first time. "But his body was human," she continued. "Some people think that thereâs another painting that goes with this oneâone of the prince himselfâbut thatâs just a rumour."
"So was that a real story?" Natsu clarified, uncertain from her choice of words.
"Maybe," she vaguely replied. "I like to think it is, if not for the unconditional and undying love the nymph and her prince held for each other. I always liked to believe that he commissioned this painting of her so he would always be able to admire her, even when she was gone. I think itâs quite romantic."
Natsu never cared much for romance or love stories, but he supposed he could understand where she was coming from.
His attention had since turned from the painting to the stranger standing next to him. If she noticed he was staring, she didnât pay it any mind. She seemed much too busy examining every inch of the painting, as if the girl in the frame might tell her more about her story.
"You kind of look like her," Natsu blurted out after a moment of consideration.
"What?"
For the first time since she approached, her composure was shaken, seemingly taken off guard by his sudden remark.
"Yeah, you got the same hair and the same eyes," he justified.
Looking closer, she even shared the same facial structure and pale skin. She didnât have the pointy nymph ears in the painting, but thatâs where the differences ended. It was almost uncanny.
"You think so?"
She looked up at him, and in the moment their eyes connected, he was certain of it.
"I donât really see it," she replied, averting her gaze from his, her face growing a slight flush at what she assumed to be a compliment.
"If you hadnât told me, I probably just would have assumed that painting was of you," he shrugged, earnest in his conviction.
He noticed the way her cheeks grew even redder as he spoke, but she didnât reply, seemingly too embarrassed to muster any words.
Instead of pressuring her to converse, Natsu simply took a few steps closer to the painting to admire some of the finer details.
"Celestial Fairy Princess, Lucy," he read off of the plaque sitting beneath the painting before his attention was caught by a surprised squeak behind him.
Turning on his foot, he noticed the girl trying to hide her now beet-red face in her hands.
"What?"
"My name is LucyâŠ" she murmured.
It took him a second to process this new information, but once he did, he let out a loud cackle that drew the attention of the few others that were in the room.
"So you are the girl in the painting!"
"No Iâm not!" She sputtered,
"Then I guess youâre just her reincarnation I guess," he grinned. "You're probably not gonna find any dragon princes here, though. They donât even have dinosaur bones at this museum."
"Yeah, well, I already knew that. Prince Natsu wasnât exactly the quiet, intellectual type," she murmured, still unsure how to respond to his accusations but realising that deflecting wouldnât do her any good.
Though now it was his turn to be caught off guard.
"How did you know my name?" He asked, not recalling telling her in the brief moments since they had spoken.
"Your name?" She replied, looking almost as confused as he was.
"Iâm Natsu," he said, pointing to himself.
Her jaw fell open at this new information, half expecting him to say he was lying, but convinced by the serious expression on his face.
"Natsu," she repeated, taking her time to get to know the way it felt on her tongue.
Hearing it was both foreign and familiar, as though he were hearing it for the first time but somehow also the millionth. It was so strange, like it was the most natural sound in the world.
"Lucy," he replied, as if compelled by some unnatural force to say it.
It came completely naturally to him, as if it had slipped off his tongue so easily in a past life and as though he were meant to say it for the rest of their lives.
