“People don’t usually believe me on that until I beat them at an arm wrestle, kudos.” She grinned up at him, offering the now open bag. “Sure, go ahead. That’s a good way to think about it.”
“Hey, if I don’t take your word for it, what kind of man would I be?” He raised an eyebrow and peered down into the bag before reaching in and grabbing one at random. “Positivity’ll get you everywhere.” Words he lived by.

she can’t help the laughter that spills out as he explains the extensive description , shrugging her shoulders , ❝ humble brag. how didn’t i guess that ? . . detective turned personal trainer in the snow is an interesting choice . ❞ she pouts at him , shaking her head , ❝ am i coming across as a beggar ? i’ll let you off this time , but the next time i’m making you pay . ❞ orla begins packing her belongings away , suddenly realising she’s made herself at home and scattered things everywhere , ❝ how do people meet others these days without tinder ? take advantage of the cold and advertise yourself as a walking heat pack in the lobby ? ❞
“Well, since I’m not training people in the actual snow and more in a gym, I don’t think it’s that interesting,” Luke shrugged. “How did they meet people before tinder? By going out and making the effort rather than swiping left and right. I’m not big on social media. Easier to do it in person.”

“oh really? i’d love to see that but i doubt it, i was just being honest after all.” she grinned back when he joked around with her. but when he spoke about her being the first to know when he ended up finding someone who admired him and probably would end up with him, a dry laugh escaped her. “perfect, that’s just what i want.”
“You would not like to see that,” Luke chuckled. He tried his best not to blush when he could – his brother used to make fun of him for it as a kid simply because his face always went really obnoxiously red. But Luke wasn’t that oblivious. He noticed the change in her tone at her last sentence and furrowed his eyebrows. “You don’t sound so sure about that... sorry, did I overstep?”

“well whoever you’ve been spending time with here in wintergreen, clearly hasn’t told you how sweet you are, case in point–offering to take me out for coffee just for bumping into me.” jade knew it was good to leave out the part where she basically forced him into it. “maybe,” she took a sip from her drink before shrugging. “well hopefully you notice when it does.” her little crush was getting out of hand, especially when it was becoming painfully obvious that luke didn’t see her as anything more than an acquaintance, especially since she’d been a little too obvious in her attempts to draw attention to the fact that she found him good looking.
“Oh, stop it,” Luke smirked and shook his head. “You’re gonna make me blush, Jade, and I can’t have that. It’d ruin my street cred.” His tone was completely joking and he figured that Jade would be able to recognise it. “If it ever happens and I do recognise it, you’ll be the first to know.”

“well whatever the reason, it only makes both you and your brother a lot more likeable, so that’s a win, right?” she smiled with a quick shrug before giggling at his words and shaking her head. “clearly you’ve been hanging with the wrong crowd luke if it hasn’t happened yet..or maybe you just haven’t noticed?”
“Yeah, I guess so,” he nodded. Personally, he found his brother a lot more likeable than him – and most other people agreed. It was one of the many perks of moving away from Chicago. “Truth is, I havent been hanging with many crowds, if any. And I like to think I’m good at noticing that stuff, so I just think it hasn’t happened.”

“That sounds like a superpower in of itself, and I would be lying if I didn’t say that I wasn’t afraid of that person,” he laughed. “I guess we’re both wiser now.”
“I mean, it pretty well is. Like I said, you’ve gotta have some sixth sense or something to not run into people, even if you’re not reading, and that’s clearly a sense I missed out on,” he smirked. “Yeah, just a little bit. But saying that, I’ll probably do the same thing in a weeks time and regret it.”

“so your parents raised you to be a chivalrous guy huh? i mean–i can see that coming to your advantage quite a bit,” jade mentioned before she heard his reasoning for it. “that’s a cute way to see it,” jade murmured before glancing back up at him. “well i can tell that many of the ladies here in wintergreen are easily going to fall for this charming behaviour of yours.” myself included.
“Yeah, they did. They’re good people. It was partly because they wanted to have good children that did the right thing but also because they just liked the way it looked to the neighbours,” he shrugged. “Oh, you think that, do you? I’ve been here a year and that’s yet to happen, but I suppose there’s always time.”

she blinks toward the hand gesture , mildly amused by the theatrics on display , ❝ yes , perhaps , . . but it gives a pretty good idea . you’re an athlete then ? around here they tend to be less , . . friendly than you are . ❞ her gaze is on the screen attached to the camera , zoomed in on the photo she’d just taken , ❝ you’re actually quite photogenic . would you like it for your tinder ? i’ll give it up for five bucks , . . AND another thing , milfs run this joint , okay . the sooner you give in to their , . . wrinkly charm the easier it’ll be . ❞
Luke shook his head. “Yeah, no. I mean, not really – detective turned personal trainer, snowboarder on the side. I kind of have to be friendly. It’s in the job description, for me, at least,” he shrugged. “Well thanks. I don’t do the dating apps thing, though, but if you’re that desperate to sell it, I’ll pay you anyway. And even if they do run this place... I think I’d rather struggle than give in.”

orla scoffs , looking him up and down subconsciously , ❝ are you kidding ? somehow , i can see people’s muscles through their snow gear . i don’t even know how the hell that’s possible . ❞ she takes opportunity to take his photo regardless , though it would most likely end up like majority of hers do , alive only in the camera , ❝ speak for yourself . there’s a lot of milf’s around here that i’m sure would appreciate it . ❞
“Okay, no– hold up,” Luke held up a hand. “Just because someone has muscles doesn’t mean they’re good at snowboarding. It’s all about the technique. I’ve seen guys bigger than me that can’t snowboard for shit.” His tone was defensive but he didn’t mean anything by it. “Yeah, because that’s the demographic I’m going for. I mean, nothing against them, but you know... not exactly who I’d want staring at my face on paper.”

jade nodded, before keeping her gaze averted once more, she didn’t know why she was getting so shy around this man, they were still virtual strangers after all. “you’re right, sorry,” she gave him a quick smile before shaking her head. “you don’t have to be so chivalrous with me luke, it’s the 21st century after all.”
Luke was completely oblivious to her shyness and her little crush. He wasn’t particularly used to this sort of stuff, so it all went over the top of his head. “No, no need to apologise,” he shook his head. “I’m fully aware that it’s the 21st century, but I’m just doing what I was raised to do, y’know? My parents were pretty traditional back in the day. And I like doing it. Makes me feel like I’m doing some sort of good deed.”

jade grinned at the man before shrugging. “maybe one time you should try one.” she pushed her own drink over slightly before smiling. “this is a caramel macchiato, with half sugar. so it’s not too sweet, you might like it.” she heard his words and nodded, hating the fact that her cheeks were tinted red thanks to his words. “i’d like that, for sure–maybe dinner or something else?”
Luke smiled at her offer. “Rather than drinking out of your cup, how about next time we get coffee together, you order for me? That’s about as adventurous as I think I can get,” he smiled softly. “Yeah, I think I’d be cool with that. But remember – I’m paying.”

❝ do i look like i belong on a snowboard to you ? ❞ her tone comes across condescending , though it’s not her intention. her clumsy limbs don’t account for activities like snowboarding , ❝ if i even tried , i’d give it ten minutes before i was in that fucking ambulance . ❞ orla pats the camera case beside her , ripping the velcro open to take the camera out and bring the viewfinder to her eye , ❝ interested in being the FACE of wintergreen ? ❞
“I mean, does anyone look like they belong on a snowboard? Have you seen some of those Olympians? They don’t look like they could do shit, yet they still win the gold,” Luke shrugged. He probably didn’t look like much of a snowboarder either, yet he still tried his best to get out on the slopes every day. At the sight of her camera, though, Luke instantly shook his head. “Yeah, I think I’ll pass on that. I don’t think anyone wants my face to be on a brochure.”

jade giggled at the words luke used to describe his brother’s coffee sense and shrugged. “i get my fair share of those types in here, but you’ve got to hand it to them, some of them come up with the greatest creations ever.” she murmured before looking up at him and nodding, pleased to hear that there might be a next time. “so–um, that implies that there will be a next time?” but as she said the words, her hands were on the warm drink in front of her, both her hands cupping the drink entirely, her gaze focused on the steam coming up from it.
“Well, that’s true. But I’ve never tried one, so I could never be sure if it was a great creation or just a mistake,” he chuckled. Luke nodded at her words. At least so far, he’d been enjoying their little chat and he liked Jade a lot. “Yeah, absolutely. I mean, if you’re up for that. You’re not bad company.”

“he used to judge you on liking black coffee? honestly–sometimes it’s better than the rest with sweetness and all. plus it makes a barista’s job a lot easier.” she grinned before looking up at him and shaking her head. “you don’t need to, i mean it’s really no big deal,” but her fellow barista quickly just told her to go and sit down and that it was on the house. “see–perks of working here,” she led him to the booth and slid across from him.
“Oh, all the time,” he confirmed. “He’s like, a total fancy, expensive coffee kinda guy. Anyone who does anything simple is just strange to him.” A few years back, Luke had ordered him a black coffee, thinking that’d be his coffee of choice. It’d ended up going to waste. “Right, well next time, it’s on me, okay?”

“They’d have to, I’d feel guilty if they didn’t.” He shook his head, “Okay, so i might have a couple of blankets, but I don’t move around too much in my sleep, so it’s not that much of a concern for me.”
“Oh, well that’s good,” he replied. “My parents had a dog when I was a kid and he always used to sleep on my legs and I swore I accidentally kicked him off five times a night. He probably hated me.”

jade pretended to think about his words before giving him a quick shrug. “i’ve learned to stop judging people based on their drink orders a long time ago. so don’t worry luke, you’re safe.” she grinned before ordering him a black coffee and getting a caramel macchiato for herself. “should we grab a booth by the window?”
“Well, that’s good to hear,” he hummed. “My brother used to judge me on it all the time. Told me I needed to be more adventurous, but like, if you like something, why change it?” Luke watched as she ordered. “We should definitely get a booth, but before we do that, you should know that I’m paying. After all, I’m the one that ran into you.”
