Just to add something that’s maybe a little encouraging:

Elementary schools are starting to put a lot more emphasis on social/emotional learning (well, at least the district where I work is). We have a program that the kids do in class once a week about things like conflict resolution and emotional regulation. One of our specials (like gym, art, etc.) is called Life Skills, and about half of that curriculum is all about self-regulation techniques and leadership.

There’s a program called PBIS, or Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, which maintains that the best way to support students with stuff going on is to support all students at a basic level with things like recognition of positive contributions and emphasis on respecting others. (Though there are obviously additional, more specialized supports for kids who need them.) Things like giving a student a “purple superstar” stamp for doing something helpful or solving a problem with communication skills, or having them color in part of a kindness square sheet when they do something kind (and then the whole class gets a reward when it’s full). It’s not perfect — for example kids who do have a tougher time can sometimes be overlooked if their teacher/staff member is judging kids based on one standard for everyone rather than individual growth and progress — but it’s far more than anything that was there when I was in elementary school even just fifteen years ago.

Anyway, my point is that even if we didn’t learn those skills as kids, there’s gonna be a whole generation who did. Our students are growing up learning how to label and accept their emotions without judgement, learning how to communicate with others to resolve problems instead of assuming the worst, learning mindfulness meditation and deep breathing and a myriad of other ways to regulate themselves. And even if I had to learn all that the hard way, knowing that these kids have the tools to spare themselves some of that shame and heartache gives me at least a little bit of hope.
