One of the things which I think should be most shocking to people who have no experience with Homeless shelters is how often they have policies which *actively make it harder for their residents to find or keep a job*.
What happens if you have a strict curfew but the bus back from your new job only comes once every hour? Better hope you don't leave work even five minutes late, otherwise you ain't getting to sleep indoors tonight! Hope that doesn't impair you at work tomorrow!
Also, better not try to get any swing or night shift work!
This is so obviously stupid and counterproductive that I think those of us who have never had first-hand knowledge of being homeless can't imagine that this kind of stuff is *normal* in American shelters.
Like legitimately they seem designed to keep people homeless.

it's always "transfems don't get to do this" or "transfems aren't the wisest of modern oracles" or "transfems who do this have no honor and will never see Sto'Vo'Kor"

somewhere out there right now is a kid with curly hair being raised by people who have wavy hair at best and those people are giving them 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner and telling them to dry brush it. and that kid is gonna spend all of middle school and high school hating their hair and moping over the flat iron. they're being told right now that if they don't dry-brush their curl pattern into oblivion every morning it means they're unkempt and gross even though they naturally have the kind of ringlets that a thousand bridezillas would commit horrible murders for every june. it's happening right now it's an absolute epidemic and a tragedy every time

Panic under stress? Interview time. Voice dysphoria? This job has you making phone calls every day. Struggle to keep track of dates/time? Have a sporadic, inflexible work schedule. Get overstimulated easily? music blaring all day. Sensitive to heat, sweat easily? We don't have a/c. You can be on your feet all day, right? We don't have a uniform and we expect our employees to dress well from day 1. Payday is bimonthly. Hope you like diesel exhaust. Looks like somebody has time to lean. Don't forget to smile and lie the correct amount during the interview. You seem qualified, but we'd like to check your credit score before bringing you on board.

And none of these people are willing to do more than record it on their cell phones. It's your duty to unarrest someone if you see them getting arrested. Be fucking brave, please.

does labeling a hierarchical dichotomy create conflict, or does it simply elucidate the conflict that one class of people is incentivized to ignore because it personally benefits them hmmmmm...
does it encourage more discussion about who is in the oppressed class than about the mechanics of the particular oppression itself, or are people just wildly insecure about maybe possibly perhaps having a modicum of privilege hmmmmm...
does ingroup/outgroup dynamic exist even if ingroup pretends really really REALLY hard that it doesn't, or is ingroup simply jury-rigging the discourse to win internet points hmmmmmmm...
Who's to say!

i get why there's a culture of "make your own post" on this section of the website cuz like if you've been here for any time then you'll definitely experience your posts being reblogged by the most evil motherfucker alive or a concern troll trying to speak over you on a serious self-advocating post. but i think overapplication of that culture does have consequences to how social interaction occurs on the site. for one it's learned etiquette which isn't obvious to a lot of people especially if they don't know why it exists, and hostility from those who understand to those who don't, creates an ingroup-outgroup dynamic between social circles. it's often most unfair to those who already lack social connections. second it discourages forum-thread-type discussion between people who aren't super close, encourages the posting style of every post being an enclosed 'take' which must be robust on its own and simultaneously better than other people's previous iterations of similar takes. (maybe?) encourages more hostile vagueposting type discussions to a degree, out of fear of confrontation. i do get that many people are aware of these things and evaluate for themselves that that's how they want to interact with this website, and i really don't judge them for it. it's just personally i try to let most interactions with my posts slide regardless of whether i like them cuz i don't want people to be scared of approaching me and i know too well what it's like to be scared of social interaction like that
#I generally avoid commenting on other people's posts as much as possible mostly bc mental illness. There is no community on tumblr to me.#It may as well simply does not exist! This is the Takes Website to me and that's all it has ever been!#And if my Take is tacked onto your Take it's just an unwanted Take that nobody asked for. Chance for conflict constantly at a low simmer

a mom lets her 10 year old and 7 year old go to the grocery store unsupervised for the first time ever and a 79 year old in an SUV mows over the 7 year old as he's crossing a 4 lane street and kills him. no charges for the murderer - police said there was "no evidence of wrongdoing" - but the parents (both of them) are getting charged with felony involuntary manslaughter and misdemeanor child neglect.
this country is so fucking inhospitable to children. they cannot leave their fucking houses because of our obsession with driving 3000 pound child flattening machines. every year the SUVs and trucks get taller and taller and you physically cannot see children trying to cross the street and people just don't fucking care enough to do anything about it. we built our entire society to prioritize child flattening machines over actual children even though lower profile cars are perfectly servicable for the vast majority of use cases. our government would rather legislate and litigate children into de facto imprisonment than threaten auto industry profits.
i can't fucking bear this anymore. this shit is a public health emergency and NOBODY fucking gives a shit in any way that matters because it primarily affects children. because to examine/fix it effectively we would need to treat children as people in their own right instead of as the property of their parents. end car culture NOW. prison abolition NOW. youth liberation NOW.

2014:
Transfeminine - An umbrella term that may be used to describe a person who was assigned male at birth, and identifies as trans. non-binary, or otherwise gender diverse. Transfeminine people may be binary or non-binary, and their gender expression often is more feminine.
2015:
Transfeminine is a term used to describe transgender people who were assigned male at birth, but identify with femininity to a greater extent than with masculinity. They could be either trans women or nonbinary. The "opposite" goes for Transmasculine.
2016:
Transfeminine relates to a person who was born male but whose gender identity is more female than male.
2011:
From hereon, the category transmasculine refers to transgender people who were assigned female at birth and now identify as male or masculine ... . The category transfeminine refers to transgender people who were assigned male at birth and now identify as female or feminine ... .
1985, this is the apparent coining the term "transfeminine." We can treat the usage of "a male" here as an antiquated form of our modern, preferred diction - "a person assigned male at birth."
Do we need another term or category to cover my particular reality? Maybe! Could it be "transfeminine" (a male who feels like a female, strictly undefined in relation to any issue of an operation_ perhaps! Or, how about expanding the meaning of transvestite or transsexual to cover a wider range of conditions? No doubt that would also be a possible solution! Not that I'm suggesting that I have the best or most appropriate answer to the name question. But I am convinced that the presently defined terms leave me stranded "in a no (wo)man's land" of inadequately described feelings and identity.
I really recommend you read the last article in full. It is wonderfully illustrative of the linguistic limitations of that time, and has plenty of broadly applicable insights.
I've been seeing a lot of revisionism in the direction of exclusivity in transfemme spaces lately and it's getting a little concerning. Like not even 3 years ago everything was "why do you need to know about my genitals" and "how other people identify is not your business" and now we've got people saying you can only be transfemme if you're amab. It's the same people who were rightfully going to bat for bi lesbians and nonbinary lesbians but now all of a sudden they care about what they allege to be contradictory labels. Like their idea of what transfemme even means is something I've only seen in like the past year.
Personal identity is not an exclusive club, you should not define yourself by how other people hurt you, and you shouldn't be trying to define other people's relationship with their genders at all

🌲 From the Nakba 76 years ago all the way up until today, the Jewish National Fund has been using "environmentalism" and tree-planting to greenwash Israel's ethnic cleansing of Palestinians.

something really vile about Bernie Sanders using MLK as an example for how peaceful protests are better than riots as if he wasn't about to join in on more aggressive forms of protesting until they(white folks in power) took him out.
white people love to use king as an example but then forget they were the ones that killed him.
I hate liberals to an unnatural degree
