SunaOsa Fic Rec
It's been just over a year since I started reading for this pairing and I wanted to make a comprehensive rec list to commemorate all the amazing fics I love! I haven't read everything out there, but from what I have, these are my faves!
I've sorted this list into canon compliant first, followed by alternate universe afterwards. I've also added some of my own thoughts to a few of the WIP's and/or longer ones that I felt could use some more context-- especially because I know WIPs and longfics are a bigger time commitment-- but I do truly adore all the fics on this list.
Without further ado, I hope this might come in handy for anyone out there looking for some great SunaOsa fics to read!
Canon Compliant
The Geographer by Magneticnorth / Currently: 277k / Teen / WIP
Rintaro thinks this might be the fundamental difference between them. This thing that he will never understand about Osamu, this thing that Osamu will never understand about him. "I'm not from a place like this," he says, shoving his frostbitten fingers into the pocket of his sweatshirt, staring upwards at the Amagasaki sky. "Look- Osamu, before this, I was a nobody from a nowhere. I don't wanna be that anymore. So... I don't got to be, like, sentimental for my hometown or whatever. I'm better than that now." All his life, Suna Rintaro has been looking for the right place. This time around, he wonders if maybe he's found it.
Okay this fic. THIS FIC. Is so, so, so criminally underrated. It isn't only one of my favourite SunaOsa fics, it's one of my all time favourite fanfics EVER, across any fandom. It is INCREDIBLE, I am OBSESSED, I'm not exaggerating when I say I think about it DAILY and have for over a year; it's a condition, it's a lifestyle, and I need others to live it with me. In fact, part of my motivation for making this rec list was to signal boost it because I need other people to yell about it with.
It's a coming of age story, first and foremost, so there's romance but it's not central in the way you might find in a romance-centric shipfic. It is veryyyy slow burn, so definitely be aware of that, but the way Suna and Osamu's relationship develops over the course of the story is so beautiful and nuanced, and is very much rooted in establishing emotional intimacy and trust first - especially because Suna isn't a fan of Osamu much when he first meets him, so it's a gradual warming up to each other (and it's written so realistically!). There's a subtle almost magnetic attraction there also, and while Suna doesn't become aware of it for a very long time, the way the writer captures his voice and combines that with his own personal hangups that affect how he perceives Osamu initially is so on point that you can read between the lines of where his attention is a lot earlier than that!
It's currently an ongoing WIP, but there's so much story already in what's posted now that I feel it's worth a read regardless. Honestly, I've learned more about writing as a craft just studying this fic than I think I have in my whole life combined, it is just that brilliantly written.
So! If you're a very active reader, if you enjoy sinking your teeth into a text and turning it around in your brain like a microwave, if you enjoy annotating, if you get very invested in character arcs and character voice and world-building and symbolism and foreshadowing and theme and seamlessly integrated original characters and you swoon over attention to detail and narrative callbacks that reward multiple rereads --I've lost track of how many times I've reread it, and I still notice new details and connections *ahem*-- and how all of these things are then woven together, this is definitely the fic for you! Please, please give it a shot, I promise you won't be disappointed.
earth and moon by evelynwrites / Complete: 73k / Mature
“Someone once told me it’s rude to stare,” Osamu lilts without opening his eyes. What Rin would give to see them. “So, you’re not dead,” Rin retorts, echoing that one fateful afternoon, as he shifts onto his back. They lie side by side. “And who said I was staring?” “Were ya,” Osamu questions, opting to craft new memories rather than run his hands over old ones. “Yes,” Rin replies truthfully, indulgently. “Like what ya see,” Osamu wonders and his lips curve into a lopsided smile. “Always,” Rin breathes once, then twice. “Always.” OR the story of Rintarou and Osamu, as told through walks home, late nights, pinky promises, and the art of studying not staring.
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! Another one of my all time SunaOsa favourites, this fic has such a particular vibe to it that is enhanced so well by the stunning use of space-themed metaphors and similes. I always cry when I read it, not because it's sad necessarily-- it's ultimately a very hopeful, if a little angsty at times, very beautiful story about what it means to be in love with someone-- but because the prose and the relationship development is genuinely so beautiful it makes me emotional? I keep saying beautiful, but that's honestly the main word that comes to mind when I think about this fic. Suna and Osamu's relationship is so incredibly romantic and moving, the prose is like poetry in long form narration, and it's GORGEOUS!
homecoming by sketchedsmiles / Complete: 43k / Mature
In the years since they’ve graduated, Suna Rintarou has become a stranger, and Osamu has resigned himself to the distance that separates them. But when Suna shows up in Hyogo right before the Olympics, a little lost and a little uncertain, Osamu can't turn him away—and he's forced to confront his long-harbored feelings for Suna that never faded.
Hindsight is 20/20 by Pawtiful / Currently: 73k / Explicit / WIP
“Would you fall in love with me again?” It’s soft. Not casual, not careful — just honest. Osamu huffs out a laugh that’s more breath than humor, like the weight of the question sinks into his chest before he can stop it. It’s the sound of someone who’s been trying not to want something for a long, long time, but who has been defeated anyway. He doesn’t answer right away. Just stares out into the dark alley, jaw clenched like he’s chewing on glass. Finally, when Osamu speaks, his voice is rough with resignation. “Yeah.” He doesn’t look at Suna when he answers. “Yeah, Rin. I would.” A beat. “And I think that’s exactly our problem.”
Another WIP that I'm really enjoying so far! This fic does something really interesting by jumping between alternating POV's that take place in different periods of their lives to show us the past and current story of their relationship -- Suna's in present day Shizuoka (2023-) and Osamu's in Hyogo (2011-). I really love how much focus this fic puts on the pro volleyball season and the inherent drama of league standings and media reporters and Suna's desire to make the national team because he wants so badly to go the 2024 Olympics, but he hasn't made the cut yet (one of my favourite things for fics to explore with his character!). A very intriguing fic so far!
miya atsumu's private investigation into touch, change, and the rin voice by rosegoldwriting / Complete: 3.5k / Teen
For some reason, his brother, the least touchy person Atsumu knows, has been all over Suna Rintarou since the end of the regular season. Atsumu would like to know why. Let’s get into the evidence.
THE ANATOMY OF TRAPS AND OTHER CIRCULAR THINGS by ionica01 / Complete: 3k / Teen
“I don’t want to get into a PR scandal about dating your brother.” “But getting into a PR scandal about bein’ engaged to me would be fine?” “You’re not as scandal-material as Atsumu.” Free food is the best - at least until it comes at the price of Osamu pretending his feelings for Suna are fake.
high school sweethearts by butterflytea (castaspellas) / Complete: 1.5k / General
There is never a moment where Osamu doesn’t want to kiss Suna.
Things Left Unspoken by Avryx / Complete: 15k / Explicit
After eight years of silence since high school, Suna unexpectedly walks into Osamu's restaurant late one night. The surprise reunion is tense at first, filled with unspoken questions and unresolved feelings. They go out for drinks, reminiscing about the past and confronting what kept them apart. As the night deepens, old chemistry resurfaces, and one thing leads to another, blurring the lines between nostalgia and something more intimate.
Acts of Service by smallferalraccoon / Complete: 4.5k /Explicit
Suna seizes the chance to hook up with his best friend, and gets rimmed within an inch of his life.
buzzcut season by yuzubalm / Complete: 2.4k / Teen
Twice, they come back with new haircuts.
meltwater by crocodile / Complete: 4.4k / Teen
Osamu’s eyes crack open as the water sloshes around Rintarou. “Maybe this was a good idea after all.”“Of course it was,” Rintarou says, reclining until the water is up to his shoulders. “When have I ever had a bad idea?”“I can think of a few,” Osamu says, grinning crookedly.Honestly, so can Rintarou. Daring Atsumu to jump off the club room roof second year, smoking as a professional athlete, getting a crush on Osamu at sixteen, drunkenly kissing Osamu at twenty-one, confessing to Osamu at twenty-six two days ago—Sighing, he leans his head back on the warm tile, and quiet settles over them. Even now, a rejection fresh between them, it isn’t uncomfortable. That’s the problem with being around Osamu—Rintarou always feels at home, even when it’s clear he isn’t.
long way home by crocodile / Complete: 15.5k / Explicit
Rintarou slams the bathroom door behind him and turns the water on to scalding. Steam rises in the small space, obscuring his reflection in the mirror. He stares into it as the shower runs empty. Behind mist, behind glass, something lies there wicked and selfish. Rintarou has a knife in his hands, and tonight he stabbed deep. And Osamu let him, he thinks. And Osamu handed him the knife.
Litany in Which Certain Words Are Said by insomnia (cosmicbluebells) / Complete: 10k / Teen
Moonlight spills through the cracks in the canopy of trees; the dark sky is a gaping mess of cavities and black teeth and starlight fillings. Suna’s cheeks are bright red. He spins the tab of a beer can between his fingers, and his helix piercing glints metallic. He’s pretty like this—eyes flashing silver, mouth flushed a gentle pink. Osamu is close enough to see the green rings of his irises. He says softly, “I love you.” “Okay,” Osamu whispers faintly, the words making space in his ribcage for the cool night air to fill his lungs. “Okay.” Five times Suna tells Osamu he loves him, and one time Osamu says it back.
Seeing Stars by tacoloser (ftld) / Complete: 5.7k / Teen
Osamu never had to deal with so much going on in his head before. Did walking into that pole make him smarter? Was this how smart people thought?
Bad Ideas by tacoloser (ftld) / Complete: 6k / Teen
"Rin, my ma's gonna kill me." In which Osamu and Suna have a grand total of (1) thought between them and it doesn’t even have the decency to live in their heads.
drowning in gravity by viverella / Complete: 24k / Mature
This isn’t love, Rintarou thinks as he kisses Osamu under the cover of darkness and the midsummer moon. This isn’t love, because he knows love and knows that it ended between the two of them something like six years and a lifetime ago. Of all the terrible ideas Rintarou has had in his life, sleeping with his ex has got to be one of the worst.
resistance to flow by viverella / Complete: 6k / Teen
Miya Osamu is fifteen when he meets Suna Rintarou, sixteen when an idle thought makes a chance appearance in his mind that Suna’s quite pretty when he laughs. He’s twenty when he kisses Suna for the first time, twenty-one when they first sleep together. They don’t really talk about it, but Osamu finds that maybe he didn’t quite expect them to, and them sleeping together doesn’t really change anything, besides. He’s twenty-two when he realizes that this might be a problem.
The Loss We Learned by DeathBelle / Complete: 41k / Teen
When Suna and Osamu broke up, it wasn’t on good terms. The end was bitter, and Suna has tried his best to forget about the breakup - and about Osamu - over the past five years. He’s done well, for the most part. He rarely thinks about Osamu anymore and he’s had a successful life without him. Suna doesn’t need Osamu. He never did. But when they see each other by mistake, Suna finds it more difficult to forget what they had in the past. He doesn’t need Osamu, but maybe Suna still wants him.
moonlight by sketchedsmiles / Complete: 5.5k / Explicit
"Everyone on the roster is there because they deserve to be. Everyone works hard. I know that better than anyone else. Atsumu and Aran-san deserve this. But I work hard, too."
how to NOT have big fat feelings for your ace best friend by ionica01 / Complete: 8k / Teen
And Osamu can’t help it – his brother is an idiot. Some people get born with a good voice or a music rhythm – Osamu’s glad he was born with Atsumu and his sex is ew metaphor for whatever it is that’s been tormenting him for the past three years. Osamu doesn’t find people hot, dyes his hair, realizes he’s in love with his best friend, and embraces being a Miya - in that order.
how to fail no nut november by ionica01 / Complete: 5k / Explicit
“Aren’t you holding back around me?” Osamu’s face might be on fire. Algebra homework suddenly seems like a charming way out of this conversation. Osamu attempts the longest no nut challenge known to man. This is how he fails.
of great ambition by sketchedsmiles / Complete: 17.8k / Mature
There are many words associated with Suna Rintarou: laid back, flexible, lazy. It takes him almost three decades to add Olympian to the list.
wait (i'm on my way) by viverella / Complete: 13k / Teen
It starts and ends, oddly enough, with the promise of lunch and a little bit of hair dye. The rest, as they say, is just details. (OR: a couple years after graduating from high school, Suna’s still pining, but he’s gotten better about it, quieter. It doesn’t make it any easier.)
arms wide, wishing; arms closed, praying by viverella / Complete: 19.4k / Teen
“Sorry.” “For what?” “A lot of things, probably.” Five years after the fact, Osamu wonders if it’s too late for them to start trying to pick up the pieces, wonders what it would take to put it all back together again. The answer: one night of heartache, seven months of healing, and another five to let the cards fall where they may.
Missing You by tacoloser (ftld) / Complete: 20k / Explicit
“I said what?” Osamu’s slack jaw hangs so wide, Rintarou kind of wonders if he could get a fist in there. Probably. “You said you love me.” It is no less absurd the second time. Rintarou navigates to his camera and snaps a picture of Osamu’s dumbfounded face. It’s a good one: jaw wagging, eyes wide under the shadowy brim of his baseball cap, lip pulled up on one side like he’s got a fishhook through it. Osamu’s confusion fades into suspicion. “That’s not funny.” “Am I laughing?” Click. In which Suna and Osamu’s friends-with-benefits arrangement is tested, and fails.
Glow by tacoloser (ftld) / Complete: 12k / Mature
"Are you?" Osamu wonders. "Going to stay a bit?" Suna considers the question, back to studying the cash register like it knows all the secrets of a flawless jump serve. "Another night maybe, if you don't mind."
Just My Type by thesweetestnerd / Complete: 7.5k / Teen
In attempt to change Osamu's perpetual single status, Suna offers to set him up with his 'dream man' but won't tell him anything about him, other than hints through memes and viral videos. Osamu goes through with it, with the desperate thought that maybe, just maybe, this will help him get over the crush he has on Suna himself. Or maybe not.
holding patterns by viverella / Complete: 8k / Teen
When their five-year high school reunion rolls around, Suna shows up unannounced at Osamu’s asking if he can stay with Osamu for the week. Osamu has no logical reason to turn him away, but this poses a problem, because a) Osamu’s apartment is very small, b) this means that he barely has enough room for his own bed much less a guest room or futon, and c) Osamu has been in love with Suna for years and if they have to share a bed, it might just kill him.
staying power by viverella / Complete: 17.9k / Teen
Suna keeps moving away, one way or another. Osamu has spent his whole life chasing him, not knowing if he’ll ever catch up.
Paint by Numbers by sifuhotman / Complete: 5k / Teen
Atsumu tries to get Osamu to dye his hair with him so people can easily tell them apart. Osamu is vehemently against this idea, but begins to reconsider it when Atsumu's new blonde color begins to attract attention—namely that of Suna Rintarou.

Rin is a creature of habit, of little words and lots of thoughts, of feelings and fears of love and loss. But Osamu isn't giving up. Despite all his changes, he's a creature of habit too. As long as that habit is Rin.
what never was, i build and seize by seleuchi / Complete: 4.9k / Teen
The way Suna had thought of it is this: he thought he'd understood having no need for memories. That there had only ever been here, and there would only ever be now. Suna receives several unnerving texts, a crimson jersey, and varying tastes of sweetness. Not necessarily in that order.
honey, I need help with the kids by yuzubalm / Complete: 14k / General
Suna is known for a couple of things. He's known as a flexible middle blocker and an aggressive spiker. He's known for his popular Instagram account and occasional viral tweets. He is not known for his child-minding skills, given, fairly obviously, that he doesn't have a kid. But no matter. Here he is today, ready to babysit a child, all in the name of entertainment and fun.
kiss me more by yuzubalm / Complete: 15k / Mature
It’s simple; Osamu doesn’t actually have to say it out loud. Friends don’t kiss, because kissing makes things weird. Suna said something before, the second time it happened. Be careful, he’d murmured. Don’t wanna accidentally cross the line, right. Friends don't kiss. Friends don't sleep over at each other's houses and touch each other and sleep together, and they certainly don't keep doing that, over and over. Osamu knows this. Suna knows this. So, what are they?
Alternate Universe
An Inconvenient Espionage by DeathBelle / Complete: 26.6k / Explicit
The Miya twins are the best agents Inarizaki has ever had. Unfortunately for them, Kita disagrees. Osamu and Atsumu have fucked up one too many times, and in an attempt to tame the Miya Chaos, Kita assigns them to different partners. Osamu has spent his entire life fighting with Atsumu, but somehow Suna Rintarou is worse. Suna is scathing and sarcastic, and Osamu can hardly stand to be in the same room, much less work with him. Osamu thinks Kita's plan will backfire, because there's no possible way he can get along with Suna. It's more likely that Osamu will kill him before the job is over.
a dream of crows by crocodile / Complete: 40.5k / Mature
“If I were you,” the man says, swinging both legs over the branch, “I would ask why I’m being followed.” He hops down from the branch, floating gently to the ground as his robes billow around him.Osamu holds his ground as the man stalks closer, dropping the stick in favour of placing a hand on the hilt of the hunting knife strapped to his waist. “Alright, I’ll bite. Why?”The man stops a meter away, cocking his head. Up close, the embroidery on his robes shimmers like a living thing. Like a snake, curling and winding around him. “Because, Osamu, you smell like death.”
Legend Has It by sifuhotman / Complete: 151k / Explicit
Special Agent Miya Osamu has had a rough go. Another one of his leads is dead. His list of cold cases continues to grow. No one believes him when he says Suna Rintarou is the son of a bitch responsible, and Osamu's reputation is tanking. He's on the brink of calling it quits when Suna approaches him requesting protection in exchange for information about the last two men who turned up dead. It's an offer Osamu can't refuse, especially when it could be one final shot at gathering enough evidence to throw Suna behind bars. And especially when it leads to a bigger case he hadn't expected to interrupt—a case headed by none other than Special Agent Miya Atsumu.
To Infinity & Beyond! by tacoloser (ftld) / Complete: 14k / Teen
"Day twenty-two and I miss you like it's day three." Suna just has one more job before it's time to go home.
Systems Aligned by inisyue (arundels) / Complete: 25.4k / Mature
Osamu is a Gridrunner, one of a team of highly-specialised hackers operating from the grimy dark of the undercity. Rintarou is a rich kid on the run, in search of something secretive that he won’t speak about. Their paths cross when they are assigned as partners on a covert mission for Kita. In the neon-lit glow of the digital world, two vastly different worlds collide.
Of Monsters and Mayhem by DeathBelle / Complete: 83k / Explicit
The Miya twins have spent half of their lives killing monsters. They’ve seen all kinds of horrors, but the massacres in Okazaki are something new. These killings are more brutal than most, the worst they’ve seen in a long while, and even their paranormal abilities can’t help them find the murderer. With the help of a droll barista and an old enemy, they start getting closer to the killer; but the Miyas soon realize that trusting anyone but themselves may have been a mistake.
chain reaction by sketchedsmiles / Complete: 23k / Teen
It takes a lot to get under Osamu’s skin. His aloof new neighbor, Suna Rintarou, does it effortlessly. The more Suna makes his presence known, the harder it is for Osamu to avoid him—especially when he’s not sure he really wants to.
Breakers by tacoloser (ftld) / Complete: 31k / Teen
Osamu’s last month in Hyogo sure would be a lot less complicated if he could stop thinking about the time Suna Rintarou got caught with another boy’s hand down his pants in the library. (aka the 90s high school AU no one asked for)
sendango and a thousand efforts by rollpanna / Complete: 11.6k / Teen
Thinking back on it, Suna supposes that he should've always known Osamu was like this. But if asked, Osamu would say he never really thought about it like that; it's just something you do. What an idiot.
fool's gold by spiritscript / Complete: 34k / Teen
Maybe here, or maybe just in this moment, he thinks he can be worth more than what’s in his wallet. Maybe here, or maybe just in this moment, he can just be Rintarou alone. Suna has no one except his bad habits and the money that funds them. OR: Suna is a self-destructive rich kid, Osamu is a kind, caring restaurant owner, and Sakusa is a tired personal assistant that needs a pay rise or a holiday, or both.
Vagabond by inisyue (arundels) / Complete: 19k / Teen
Three years ago, Rintarou left Osaka without a goodbye. Now, Osamu arrives in Tokyo, trying to break into the street racing scene—only to find himself face to face with the man he never stopped loving, the past he’s been trying to run from, and the truth of how much he still wants something that he cannot allow himself to have.
glass stained black by unrequitedangst / Complete: 31k / Explicit
There's certain things Osamu expects. A precis of his current mission status, a justification from Kuroo for a second undercover agent deployment, Suna's official Agency dossier, even. Something or anything that will explain why Suna Rintarou is undercover in Shiratorizawa alongside Miya Osamu. The file Teshiro gives Osamu has none of these. There's only a single thin sheet of paper with a photograph stapled to the front. Suzuki Ryuusei, it says at the top in neat kanji, above a list of biographical facts. The birthdate is wrong, of course. So are the list of known associates, and the individual identification number, and the so-called criminal records beneath the name. The one where Osamu and Suna are secret agents infiltrating a criminal organization.
Subtle Inarizaki Dating by sifuhotman / Complete: 15k / Teen
When Atsumu is featured in the Facebook group Subtle Inarizaki Dating, Osamu begins to be mistaken for him everywhere he goes. He's annoyed and grumpy about it, but mostly, he's pissed at the person who orchestrated the whole thing: Suna Rintarou.
the spirit of the resolution by starbeyy / Complete: 69.8k / Teen
Speech and Debate champion Miya Osamu wants nothing more than a clean slate in college after a lonely three years of high school where his only friend was his debate partner and twin brother, Miya Atsumu. But though his walls are lined with trophies, plaques, and medals, he feels suffocated by his own inadequacy at the university level and laments the fact that his brother ended up somewhere much more prestigious. And having his sworn high school rival, Suna Rintarou, as his new debate partner is certainly no help.
