so the house of representatives just passed a bill that will now move to the senate to BAN tik tok completely in the united states and they are expected to argue that “national security risks” outweigh the freedom of speech and first amendment rights. biden has already said that if it gets to him, he will sign it. whether or not you use the app…….this is something to be worried about

Light *is* very “too the rules” but he makes “exceptions” if he thinks it will end with *more* rule following in the future.

It is to say he will break a rule if he thinks it’ll be for the greater good.

like i know we all have this image of light as a compulsive rule follower & i don’t think that’s wrong per se but he did murder several hundred people. which is not allowed.

I MAY be reading too much into it, and people just don’t care about all this because he is a serial killer of enourmous proportions, but I think there is not-so-obvious problem with claiming that Light is a psychopath.

So, Light Is obviously an evil person, in colloquial sense, but saying that his awfulness is an “obvious” psychopath trait implies that a “normal” person has zero capabilities to do it to begin with and should not worry about themselves. Of course I’m not saying that “most people in his case will do the same” I actually think the minority will, but still his actions are basically a result of the same mentality: he believed that there are “bad” people and “good”, so he couldn’t believe himself to have done something bad and went out of way to make it worth it

so, what I’m trying to say, making statements “psychopath = does bad things” and “does bad things = psychopath” interchangeable badly affects the capability of properly analyzing yourself, because you can always say “well, i’m not a psychopath, so I will never be a bad person!”. And when “other person” is not yourself, claiming their behavior on a personality disorder is much more easier, which prevents as to understand others as well. Not to immediately forgive for awful things, but to actually understand the roots of them, instead of claiming that this is a “personality disorder thing” cuz “normal person would never”

You’re not reading too far into it at all, I don’t think. Well said. People are calling Light a psychopath not because they truly understand psychological disorders or what defines them, but because they want a fancy term to describe his actions that implicates something even more egregious, serious and terrible than “asshole” or “evil” and separate themselves from that. Even Light feels the need to separate himself from himself, hilariously and sadly enough:

But him simply being an asshole is far, far worse than him being a psychopath. Light KNOWS better. His actions go against his innate AND engrained sense of right and wrong, and his conscience pricks him hard to the point of nightmares, rapid weight loss, nervous laughter and cold sweats. But he STILL does what’s wrong anyway and STILL justifies it being right.

Light is 100% deliberate and purposeful in how he rationalizes himself into doing what is wrong and he does so ONLY because he has something significant to gain: doing what is wrong feels WAY less painful and world-shattering than having to process the mess he’s found himself in.

It’s easier and more glamorous, as well. Be god of the new world and make it better like you’ve always fantasized about, or feel crushed by the guilt of accidentally causing somebody’s death? People think of that as insane, but his thought response is so human and natural, especially as a kid who has no real experience in heavy situations at all let alone like this. He’s immensely privileged and sheltered. It’s just the actual circumstances he’s in that are absolutely ridiculous.

It IS naturally human to do what feels comfortable and not necessarily what is right under immense stress and fear. When you’re scared of punishment or judgement, or how you might even feel about yourself, you WILL choose to do bad and stupid things to avoid it. I’ve done so many stupid things to avoid uncomfortable confrontation from my mistakes, ESPECIALLY as a child.

Light has been thrown into a situation that literally nobody would handle with grace, poise, perfect wisdom and calmness. People will claim that they have moral superiority over Light because as opposed to justifying their actions, they’d instead spiral into immense guilt and self deprecation.

But it’s totally reasonable and logical for Light to fear that considering his entire sense of self is built on the fact that he’s the ideal in his culture and in society as a whole. He doesn’t know immense failure and shame because he works very hard to achieve his best and succeeds at exceptional levels. Having all that torn away is very foreign and painful without experience and practice.

So while he’s still dead wrong and knows he’s wrong, like I said in my other post I made, it’s also REALLY asking a lot of him to deal with this whole situation in a dignified and rational way all by himself considering all the pieces within context.

Most wouldn’t do what Light Yagami does not because they’re not psychopaths, but simply because they are not Light Yagami. It has nothing to do with any condition or mental disorders. It’s just that people can’t and maybe are too afraid/reluctant to empathize with Light because it takes some deeper examination they are not accustomed to.

Definitely agree with all of this.

Light is ‘normal’ (in the way he’s not a unfeeling psychopath like some people say) and that’s terrifying. We want to believe only ‘not people’ can do horrible things but in reality *all* of us can do terrible horrible things if given the right circumstances.

I think light definitely had a corruption arc in the most literal sense, I don’t think it was supernatural in any way, just what happens when you give someone, especially someone who handles doing something bad as well as he does, the power over life and death.

The light we see at the start of deathnote is not the same at all as the one we see at the end of it. He spiraled *badly*

The deathnote just brought out the worst in him. The ego, the ‘I *cant* do wrong’ the self righteousness, all of it in a shit storm.

I’m like Light’s PR mananger out here pulling direct, blatant references to the manga whenever people feel the need to debate me when I break down Light’s character and motivations.

I don’t know why people feel like Light having a human and emotional response to his situation instead of just being a natural born serial killer waiting to be unleashed is less satisfactory.

If anything, it’s much more complex and interesting and really adds the psychological horror element of the series. Because it’s like, if this guy who has it all together goes off the deep end, then so could anybody else who comes across this scary book.

Fellow Light bash disliker!! I also hate when fics jumpscare me with light bashing! | love light as a character and wish more fics actually got his character right (or at least how I see him lol) instead of just characterizing him as "horrible stupid person who can only think of himself" people can totally write that If they really want to but pleasee tag it so I can avoid it. I very much do not enjoy that.

Light(my analysis of him) is a very flawed character that has done horrible things, but he's also a very complex character with some strengths and fics are always better (for me) when they acknowledge ALL of his character, not just his negatives.

There are plenty of fics that I think characterize Light incorrectly, whether too far in the bashing direction or too far in the woobification direction—though I get where they're coming from in both cases. Some people dislike Light and thus want to write him with his flaws exaggerated, and some people love Light and thus want to write him with his flaws diminished or non-existent. (I am also guilty of this but usually for Shigaraki Tomura specifically 😶‍🌫️). We already have several tags for the latter (Sweet Yagami Light, Good Yagami Light, etc etc) but we don't currently have any for the former, and you're right, it does make it kind of a jumpscare lmao.

I might expand on what exactly should be under the Bashing tag later, I think. Because with Light I don't think a lot of people even realize they're doing it; or even if they do, they don't tag it because everyone already knows Light is Bad and Evil anyway so it's a moot point. Even though it's,,,,very much not :')

And YES you can totally DM me to talk about Light!! Fair warning though, I am incredibly awkward in one on one conversations and my ability to reply in a timely manner is abysmal :D But you know I'm always up for Light discussions ;3

I feel you 😭 People can write whatever they want—I only ever ask that they tag it properly. ...Though I do have to wonder why even write a story revolving at least half-way around Light if you don't even like him. Like,,,just ship your favs with someone else, he doesn't need to be the focus if you don't want him to.

Here is how I stereotype people based on their DN faves

Light stans - either the politest person you've ever met or the most self-absorbed and cocky you've ever met. Usually easy to get along with because they care more about being liked than being correct. Good student vibes as well

L stans - more difficult to get along with than Light stans because they care more about being correct than being liked. Think a good conversation is about offering counter-arguments and finding points on which you differ rather than finding some common ground to stand on. Also skittish about things like having prolonged conversations one-on-one

Mello stans- the most fiesty and argumentative people in the fandom, which can sometimes bring the fun and also sometimes bring the fights. Some seem kinda distrusting of other fans who are too overly proper or polite?

Near stans - either very quiet and mostly staying in their own corners or very stubborn and opinionated. Hard for me to befriend because they aren't usually that social and also usually hate Light

Misa stans - outgoing, emotional, fun, I don't have any beef with them but I also never seem to strongly vibe with them

B stans - edgy mcedgersons who usually also hate Light, I don't think I've ever become good pals with one except when they also thought B was a dumb-butt sad clown who is mostly good for a laugh

i feel like all fandom spaces would improve dramatically if more people learned how to enjoy non-canon ships which were never written as romantic without acting entitled to official validation or throwing a hissy fit over not getting something that they were never promised
