SUBANEN CENTRAL: THEIR LIFESTYLE AND BELIEFS

Subanen Central it is a part of Zambonga peninsula, particularly living in the Zambonga Del Sur and Misamis Occidental Mindanao. Subanen is also called subanon or subanun it come from to “suba’ means river, but they moved to the hinterlands because of Visayan and Spanish Colonizers.

What is their Lifestyle?

As you can see all the tribal group of the Philippines are farmers. Subanen have a principal crop like wet, rice and maize also vegetable, tobacco and coffee and then    Subanen also has secondary crop it is domestic animal like dog, goat, chickens etc. But there the most common most, common method of farming it is “Swidden Fields”

Subanon houses are built along hillside and ridges overlooking family fields also their house to it is a rectangular and raised on stilts with thatched roofs.

The Subanen clothing it is similar to the style of Muslim region. The weaving loom is set up inside the house. Cotton thread—spun from cotton by women using the distaff crafted by man—and abaca fiber are commonly used then the Subanen used abaca fiber for their clothing and blanket

The Subanen is they do not practice division labor based on gender, men and women work in he fields together in other words there is no exception. Traditionally, the education among Subanen people was limited to instruction by the timuay head to a future husband and wife regarding love, respect and treatment of each other, parents, and in-laws. As the modernization already invaded the heart of the tribe's territories, many of them were already highly educated. Some of them got their bachelors, masters and doctoral in the high standard universities both local and abroad. Some of them are already working in the government.

The language of Subanen using it is a Subanon language, Subanon Language are group of closely related Austronesia languages belong to the Greater Central Philippine sub group. They are described as a single language and also, they are being considered linguistic as a dialect cluster more than a monolithic language.

What are their Beliefs?

The Subanen believes a “Diwata Migebebaya and Subanen adopted either Islam, Catholicism, or Evangelical Protestantism and according to the Subanen those who adopted Islam are know as kolibugan or Kalibugan and they are also believe anitos or spirit

What are the Needs?

Although these tribes are slowly being forced into a modern world, they continue to struggle daily with life’s most basic essential, they are in desperate need of quality medical care, modern farming techniques.
