Journey into Mystery #89 Vol.1 (1963) Part 2 continued... Sympathetic of his son's plight, Odin causes a lightning strike to hit one of Thatcher's men causing enough confusion for Blake to recover his walking stick and strike it on the ground changing himself into Thor. Thor makes short work of Thug Thatcher's men, however Thug and his girlfriend Ruby (who is starting to reconsider her life of crime) make an escape and head straight to Donald Blake's office where he hopes to use Jane Foster as a hostage to escape recapture. Thor arrives and is ordered to drop his hammer, as Thug is threatening to kill Jane. Thor complies but then kicks the hammer at Thatcher causing him to drop his gun. Thor then takes Jane to safety allowing for Thug and Ruby to once more flee the scene. Ruby however wishes to give up, but Thug has no such compunctions and escapes up the elevator of a sky scraper construction site. Thor's attempt to use lightning to stop Thatcher doesn't work out so well as the metal girders of the building attract the bolts of lightning, however the heat from the lightning strikes compromises the girders integrity, and when Thatcher tries to dump a bucket of hot rivets on the crowd below they give way and he falls. Journey into Mystery #89 Vol.1 (1963) Synopsis for "The Thunder God and the Thug" Returning to the office of Donald Blake, Thor notices some of his alter ego's patients watching and in order to protect his secret identity enters another office where mannequins are stored and makes a mock up of himself which he throws out into the ocean, securing his secret identity. Changing back into Donald Blake, he begins his daily routine as the renowned doctor and surgeon. As he works, he laments over his apparent unrequited love for Jane Foster, unaware that she loves him to a degree -- as she loves his alter ego Thor, and fantasizes about being married to the Thunder God. As fate would have it, captured criminal Thug Thatcher is being taken from a court house by the police when the paddy wagon is attacked by Thatcher's men. In his bold escape attempt Thatcher takes a bullet and needs instant medical attention. Spotting Blake's office, Thatcher and his men burst in and take Jane and Donald prisoner, threatening to harm Jane if Donald doesn't treat Thatcher. Forced to treat the criminal, Donald attempts to contact his father Odin telepathically to get aid. Journey into Mystery Vol 1 #88 (1963) "The Vengeance of Loki" Synopsis for "The Vengeance of Loki" Following his defeat at the hands of Thor, Loki was sent back to Asgard where he was punished by Odin, who decreed that Loki would never be allowed to leave Asgard again. Still wishing to gain revenge on his cursed half-brother, Loki casts a spell to spy on Thor, and witnesses the Thunder God's previous adventure where he saved five American scientists from Russian captivity. Loki witnesses Thor changing into Donald Blake, and now having learned his foe's mortal guise has come up with an idea to defeat Thor once and for all. In order to sneak out of Asgard, Loki transforms himself into a snake and slips past Heimdall and crosses the Bifrost Bridge to Earth. Taking on a human guise of an old man, Loki enters Donald Blake's office and hypnotizes Jane Foster and gives her secret commands and then enters Donald's office. when Don reports for work, he finds Loki waiting for him and changes into Thor. Loki poses the Thunder God a challenge in Central Park, a challenge that Thor accepts before Loki leaves. Changing back into Donald Blake he tells Jane that he is leaving for the afternoon, unaware that Jane is about to enact Loki's hypnotic suggestions upon his departure. Journey into Mystery #87 Vol.1 (1962) Part 2 - Prisoner of the Reds Synopsis from Marvel Database When left alone in his cell, Donald taps his cane changing into Thor and easily breaks out of his cell. The Russian soldiers have rigged the dungeon with various traps, which Thor easily bypasses. However, the Russians get Thor at a stalemate when their commanding officer threatens to activate a self-destruct device that would destroy the dungeon and everyone in it, including the captured American scientists. Forced to relinquish his hammer and be shackled in "electronically treated" chains that even Thor apparently cannot break out of, the Russian soldiers leave Thor unattended figuring that he is no longer a threat. As the 60 second time limit that Thor can be away from his hammer runs out, he changes back into Donald Blake, who is lithe enough to clamber out of the shackles and recover his hammer changing back into Thor. The Thunder God then frees the captured American scientists and then gets the drop on his Russian captors and easily destroys their dungeon. Reverting back into Donald Blake, Thor joins the scientists as they smuggle themselves out of the country and are shipped back home to America. Journey into Mystery #87 Vol.1 (1962) Part 1 - Prisoner of the Reds Synopsis from Marvel Database Five scientists have apparently given up on the American way of life and have defected to Russia, causing the government to exercise grave concern. While in New York, Donald Blake decides to do something in his godly identity of Thor. As part of this plan, Blake travels to Washington, D.C. where he meets Colonel Edward Harrison of the US Army Intelligence and offers himself as bait for the Russians by reporting that he has come up with a new biological weapon. When asked why he wants to help, Blake makes up a story about how his lame leg prevented him from fighting in the Korean War and he wants to do something for his country to make up for it. When the story about Blake's "discovery" hits the newswire, a Russian agent posing as a photographer for National Magazine visits Blake's office. As expected, the spy's camera is rigged to spray a will sapping gas that puts Donald in a hypnotic trance. Journey into Mystery #85 Vol.1 (1962) Part 2 continued Synopsis from Marvel Database: Seeking to take their battle to the sky, Loki is really setting up Thor for a trap, and easily hypnotizes his opponent. He commands Thor to hand over the hammer, which Thor refuses due to the will of his father Odin, try as he might Loki cannot get Thor to give up his hammer. Eventually Loki succeeds when he creates a mystical duplicate of Thor and tells his thrall to hand it over to the double, which Thor does willingly. Loki then commands that Thor go to the zoo and let all the animals loose. What Loki doesn't account for is the fact that once Thor is away from his hammer for more than sixty seconds he reverts back into the form of Donald Blake. When this happens, Blake is free from Loki's control and manages to get past a group of people trying to lift Thor's hammer (unable to do so because they are unworthy of wielding it) changing himself back into Thor. With his plot foiled, Loki attempts to escape under the cover of a flock of birds, however Thor follows after the God of Mischief. This leads to a battle across the city where eventually Loki tries to escape on an animated statue of Pegasus. Thor finally stops Loki when he manages to trap him in a pipe, knocking him off his horse and into the bay. Quickly capturing Loki, Thor takes him to the top of the Empire State Building where he uses his hammer to hurl Loki back to Asgard before Odin for punishment. Journey into Mystery #86 Vol.1 (1962) Part 1 - On the trail of the Tomorrow Man Synopsis from Marvel Database Three centuries in the future mankind knows peace and technological perfection, however one man is not happy with the state of the peaceful world. This man is the mad scientist known as Zarrko, who has built a time machine to travel into the past in the hopes of procuring humanity's powerful atomic weapons so that he might use them to conquer his future. In the present day, Thor has agreed to aid the US Military in missile tests, flying along with test missiles to review their efficiency. Hoping to test the effects of their new Cobalt bomb on human beings by studying how it effects Thor, the army has the Thunder God strapped to measuring devices and have him stand in close proximity of this new experimental bomb. However, the test does not go as planned, as Zarrko appears in his time machine and pilfers the device and escapes into the future before Thor can stop him. Journey into Mystery #85 Vol.1 (1962) Presents 'Trapped by Loki' Part 1 Synopsis from Marvel Database: In the far off land of Asgard, home of the Asgardians, the trickster god Loki has spent time trapped in a tree, so put there by Odin until someone would shed a tear over him, thus freeing him from his prison. Having taken partial control over the tree, Loki causes a leaf to fall from its branches as the god Heimdall is walking past it. The leaf lands in Heimdall's eye causing him to shed a tear, unknowingly freeing Loki from his prison. Now free, Loki begins plotting revenge against his half-brother Thor, and uses his mystic link to Thor's hammer to track Thor to New York City on Earth. Appearing on Earth, Loki takes on a mortal guise and goes to the hospital where Thor was putting on a show for sick children, but finds that Thor had just left. Unable to find Thor in the teeming millions of people, he decides to flush the Thunder God out by casting a spell that makes people in the streets turn into negative images thereby causing a panic. In his civilian guise of Donald Blake and out with his nurse Jane Foster, Thor spots the problem and slips away to transform himself into his godly form. Journey into Mystery #84 (1962) Part 2 Synopsis Continued... ...which prompts the Executioner to send the commander of the pilots to the firing squad. The Executioner then sends his armed forces to hunt down and kill the doctors. Thor fights off all attackers, but the soldiers capture Jane Foster, forcing Thor to stop his attack. The Communists fawn over Jane, until Blake arrives, demanding her release. Angered over Blake's commands, The Executioner steals his walking stick and orders Blake in front of the firing squad. However, Blake goads the Executioner into fighting him man to man, snatches back his stick, and transforms into Thor. As Thor fights off the attacking communists, the army of the democratic faction arrives, causing the Communists to flee. Realizing his defeat is imminent, the Executioner steals the gold from the treasury and attempts to flee. The other Communists recognize him as a traitor and place him in front of their own firing squad. They then realize that the Americans were their friends all along, and the war comes to an end. Blake then treats and cures all of the sick peasants, and no one suspects any connection between he and Thor. Synopsis from Marvel Database While Blake is in Europe, a revolution starts in San Diablo between a Communist faction and a democratic faction. Because of the fighting, there is a shortage of medical help in San Diablo, and several American doctors, including Dr. Donald Blake (with his trusty sidekick, nurse Jane Foster), agree to go there to help. However, the evil Executioner, leader of the Communist faction, does not want the peasants to be treated. He wants them to remain ill so that they will be too weak to oppose the Communists. He sends five fighter planes to blow up the ship carrying the doctors and medical supplies from America. Blake turns into Thor and destroys the planes... Journey into Mystery #83 (1962) Part 2 (pages 6-13) Synopsis continued from page 5: Thor easily lifts the boulder and leaves the cave. He verifies that the hammer has all the powers of Mjolnir, Thor's legendary weapon. He discovers it gives him the power to create storms and that the hammer is indestructible and will come back to him if thrown. Meanwhile, the alien armada shows up on Earth's radar screens. When fighter jets scramble to meet them, they project an image of a huge dragon and frighten away the pilots. When the ground forces fire missiles, they explode harmlessly against the ships' force fields. Thor speeds to the defense of the Earth. Part 3: Thor the Mighty Strikes Back! When Thor attacks the aliens, they drop a cage over him, but he tears the bars open. They aim their disintegration beams at him, but his hammer smashes their guns. They unleash their Mechano-Monster, but he smashes it to bits. The aliens return to their ships and give up their invasion. He flees into the hills, where he loses his cane. He runs into a cave, but the other entrance is blocked by a giant boulder. A secret door opens, revealing a chamber where Blake finds a walking stick. He tries to move the boulder with the stick but is unable to get leverage. Frustrated, he hits the boulder with the stick, and, in a flash of light, the stick transforms into a hammer, transforming Blake into Thor, the mythical Norse God of Thunder. Journey Into Mystery #100 Vol.1 (1964) Continued (pages 8-13) Thor pursues Hyde in the submarine, and Odin watches from Asgard as Thor engages Hyde in battle. When Thor drops his hammer for a moment, Jane conceals it - fearful that even if Hyde is defeated, Thor will still be unable to keep Blake from being blown up. Without his hammer, Thor only has 60 seconds before he will return to his Dr. Blake form. So the Thunder God uses his cape to create a tornado within the sub that conceals his transformation back to Blake and allows him to find his hammer. By the time he can transform back to Thor, Hyde has used the tornado as cover to escape. Before Thor can go searching for him, Jane informs him that Dr Blake is in danger. Thor has to pretend to go rescue his alter ego to keep Jane for learning his secret. Suddenly Odin appears and angrily informs Thor that he will not make Jane immortal. Her actions in hiding the hammer and allowing the evil Hyde to escape showed that she was unworthy. Thor laments that he may never find happiness. As Blake takes Jane out to dinner, they are interrupted by the villain Mister Hyde, who takes them prisoner at gun point.
