yokohama was safe. 

it was home, but not home - close enough for the familiarity to be comforting and far enough away that she didn’t run the risk of seeing anyone who might recognise her. they all thought she was dead, anyway, and the half-ghoul had decided that it was better like that.

hunting was still strange, though. no one really acknowledged the existence of ghouls, and they certainly seemed less frequent. of the ones she had encountered, they were weaker than their tokyo-dwelling counterparts - or perhaps she had spent too long with aogiri elites, and he judgement was skewed. she doesn’t dwell on it much. 

hand grips the neck of her unfortunate victim, some poor sod who she can’t really justify killing, but the hunger knawing at her throat was just a little too strong for her to care. you deserve this. neck is snapped easily, scream cut off before it even reaches his throat, and the teen hums. 

it’s the sound of footsteps that alert her to the other, stench of blood too overpowering to ascertain if they were human or ghoul. looks over to where the noise was coming from, mismatched eyes cold and unforgiving. “i suggest y’ keep goin’, i have no complaints about eating twice.” it isn’t a threat, but is said with the easy confidence of someone who knows they can follow up on the statement, regardless of if the interuptee was human or ghoul. had long since gotten over the taboo of eating her own kind.

She shakes her head vehemently. Leans forward.

“No.” she says, “No I think you did what you had to. I was in danger but it wasn’t your fault… I signed up for this, assumed I’d crack a rib at some point. You didn’t think it was anything other than a normal op, didn’t put us there on purpose.”

She bites the top of her thumb, thinking, “It didn’t look like you were out of control… I mean if you were really out of control wouldn’t you have like…” she blushes, “eaten me or something,”

Something in the back of her head is angry, angry at how easily Jean had accepted this. She had been prepared for hate, for disgust, for fear. She had nothing to respond to acceptance with.

“Not hurting my subordinate is the least that is expected of me.” Pulls herself to her feet again, rubbing her eyes for a moment before she sighs. All she wants is to get back to the base, to get whatever punishment she had coming to her, and to sleep for a few weeks. 

Using her kakuja had always been a strain. 

It’s clearer now, how it damages her, how already tired eyes have collected new bags, how her hands shake just slightly. Lack of control wasn’t the only reason she refrained from using it - the Ghoul knew that every time she did her body would deteriorate even more.

The Doctor paid his tab with a credit card loaded by his sonic screwdriver. One could never have too much of the local currency. It had been a few years since he’d been to Japan and as always he was oblivious to where he should and shouldn’t go. This seemed just as good a place as any. It was nice to be back.

He settled himself at one of the tables and spread his hands on the tabletop, staring down at them. In times like this, the little scraps of down time in between things where he was supposed to try and act normal, he never quite knew what to do with himself.

his order isn’t a difficult one, and even if she’s more accustomed to making coffee than tea, it isn’t too unusual for people to order. snags a scone from the display case, thinking for a moment how lucky it was that she had decided to make them that morning, and slides out to present the customer with his order. does so with a smile, though it does falter slightly the closer she gets, that scent she can’t even begin to comprehend throwing her for a moment. still, she doesn’t let it make her seem rude, and she returns behind the counter without incident. 

“ne, ojisan.” a few minutes had passed, alice is well aware that her conversation is sudden, but curiosity had always seemed to get the better of her. “are y’ new around here?” leans forward against the counter, watching him carefully, as if she expected him to attack. “it’s just, well, i know most everyone around here, and your japanese is too good for you to be a tourist, not that we get much of those in this ward anyway, since those ghouls started causing trouble.” 

sips her own espresso, as if thinking, before she continues. “actually, how did you even get in? news said they’d blocked off all the roads, somethin’ about a raid the ccg are planning. unless - are you an investigator? i serve them all the time, and they were talking about some people comin’ over from the main branch back in the first ward.” pauses again, pushing the hair from her face.  knows she’s saying too much, that any more prying would be more suspicious than she already was. “sorry, sorry, i’m rambling. i’ve been workin alone all day, see, haven’t really had the chance to talk to anyone.”
