3 Ways To Get Your Moneys Worth Out of Those Flowers Left Over From Valentine’s Day..
I’m not big on flowers but I hate letting anything go to waste. I was upset and ready to throw my Ex-Valentine’s dozen roses he gifted me away (don’t ask 😂) but after sitting with a friend she suggested boiling them and using them to make rose water. So if you’re like me you can get rid of an unwanted reminded of someone in a practical way or if just don’t wanna just watch them wither and die on you counter. This post was made to inspire both kinds of people(either way you still get to cut them up so win-win for my people out there going through it)
Rose Water 🌹
It wasn’t until a few days after I spoke with my friend and was doing my skincare routine that I realized I actually needed rose water (I use it in between exfoliating and moisturizing my face). In that moment I dropped everything and headed to Pinterest then my kitchen. I had everything I needed there already
-large pot
-dozen roses
-distilled water (I keep it on hand to use in my humidifier)
-oil (I happened to actually have rose oil, but coconut, vitamin E, and grape seed oils could be used instead)
-Ohh and a spray bottle or container if you don’t have one. I just refilled my Biore spray bottle and stored the rest in a mason jar.
Start by cutting flower tops from the stems, rinse with cold water. Pat dry then remove petals from remaining stem by twist the stem and pulling out. Remove and wilted or not so pretty petals first if you like. In a large pan, one the size you’d make pasta in bring distilled water to a boiled. When boiling add petals and reduce heat to about medium heat if you’re not already using medium heat. I’m in patient so I bring water to a boil on high then turn it down smh 🤦🏾‍♀️. Let the rose petals boil in the water until they turn pale and the water has taken on color. Strain, add desired oil/or not, let the liquid cool then move to a container for storage and use. That’s basically all there is to it. I pretty much eyeballed everything like I do when I’m cooking so I don’t have any specific measurements for you but here’s some tips
:: If you want it to be super strong add more petals to the same amount of water
:: If you want a pink to reddish water at the end use darker flowers
:: if you want to use it to moisturize/hydrate add more oil.
Potpourri 🌹
After seeing that I could make rose water I got the idea to research other ways to repurpose and use these flowers. I got to thinking what if someone got a few dozen or more?? My mind when to that bowl that used to sit in my grandmas bathroom 😂😂 I thought to myself how hard could it be to dry out some flowers. It turns out not hard at all. I didn’t have what they called a fixate (a powder that helps the flowers retain their natural scent and the sent of what ever oils you put on them) or enough flowers to make enough to be worth the time it takes to dry them. So I won’t try to tell you how to do that since I haven’t done it myself but now that you’ve got the idea you can definitely find a “How To..” on Pinterest or YouTube I’m sure.
Rose Oil 🌹
This is also a very simple use for those left over roses. I wish I had looked it up before I boiled all of mine to mush to make my rose water, but oh well.
So what you’re gonna need for this is
*a few rose petals (washed and air dried til completely dry)
*jojoba or almond oil
*shallow sauce pan
*a glass jar to hold your oil
*water.
Very simple process from what I’ve read..
You’re gonna place water in the shallow sauce pan over medium heat. Then place your glass jar in the water with the oil or oils of your choosing and dried rose petals inside. The heat will let the scent and beneficial properties of the rose infuse into the oil. Do not allow water or oil in the jar to boil. If you are afraid of that please reduce the heat and let infuse for 15 to 20 mins the turn of the heat and the mixture will continue to infuse with the oils as it cools.
**Disclaimer**
Do be aware that the cosmetic products you’ve created do NOT obtain stabilizers or preservatives and WILL go bad sooner than store bought counter parts. I suggest keeping them for a month at the most while properly sealing them after use and storing in a cool place. AND as with any other cosmetic, you should be conducting a patch test to check for skin irritation before applying to large areas of the body.
