That's hot. I love a woman who would be a geoguess pro to outdo Sherlock. I understand why Jonathan immediately kissed her on the mouth in front of everybody.

literally yeah mina is unbelievably smart and has great logic. and it is hot dont get me wrong but its also a fascinating insight into how bram stoker saw women. iirc mina is pretty much only shown using her smarts for the aid of the men in her life, like when she learns shorthand and tries to improve her memory for jonathan at the start, or when she does this so that the merry little band of vampire hunters can find him but on the flipside she is made a vital member of the team for her smarts and theres a lot to be said for how often women are portrayed within gothic horror with MORE depth and complexity to them than would be typical for the time. idk i wont write an essay on women in dracula or in gothic horror in general because i have well and truly done that before multiple times (not on tumblr) but all this to say LET MINA DO FUN LITTLE PUZZLES!!! mina you would have been a FIEND at not just geoguessr but probably also a ton of other word games because of the strength of your logical thinking. i want to see mina getting in heated arguments in the comments section of the nyt connections.

wanted to make a post about this for yesterday's dracula but then forgor (spoilers for basically the rest of the novel):

dracula is, essentially, having jonathan pre-game being turned into a vampire. controlling what he can communicate and to whom, influencing him to stay in the castle, and wearing jonathan's shape as he goes out to do villainy are all things he does via paranormal means to mina later on. he limits what she can and cannot say, tries to induce her to follow and join him, and projects his consciousness into her body. unlike mina, jonathan doesn't (textually) get literally vamped, he doesn't get his selfhood scooped out and replaced like lucy, but immediately after seeing someone blame him for the count's actions he begins to act more like the count and imitate some of his uncanny behavior: the wall climbing, and breaking into someone's room while they sleep to try and take something from them while they're unguarded.
