RN Portfolio #7: Period Style
ART NOUVEAU
Tumblr media
Moulin Rouge: La Goulue
lithograph 1891
Artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
In the Art Nouveau style, prints tend to have women as a theme. These prints were mass produced. This poster was publicity for the Moulin rouge cabaret in Paris, France.
ART DECO
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chrysler Building
NY, USA
Completed 1930
Architect William Van Alen
The stepped structure of this building is classic of the architectural designs during that time. The crown of this building shows the geometric forms characteristic of this style as well.
LATE MODERNISM- DECONSTRUCTION
Tumblr media
UFA Cinema Palace
Dresden, Germany 1998
Architectural studio: Coop Himmelb (I) au.
This building shows no harmony, symmetry or continuity, it is somewhat uncomfortable to see. Fragmentation is typical of the style of deconstruction, here, there is no geometry to follow and it seems chaotic. it does however look pretty cool and new.

RN Portfolio 5-6 Design and Culture-Part 2:
Tumblr media
It was really difficult to find artwork or pieces that reflect the styles discussed. And then I stared at my living room for a bit and realized this area rug in my living room has an oriental inspired frame, patterns and with variety of colors.
Tumblr media
This little sculpture is the size of my hand. However, It looks so sturdy and grand at first that it seems bigger than what it actually is. When I look at the lines and the strong connection to the ground this little sculpture gives, it makes me think of the great architecture of the renaissance period.
Tumblr media
This is the St Patrick-St Anthony church in Hartford CT. I live 15 min away from this church and I always found it mesmerizing. I found out the style in architecture belongs to the Gothic style, even though this is not a style we are studying at the moment I read that it preceded the Renaissance period, so I thought it would be interesting to see.

RENAISSANCE
Tumblr media
The Basilica of San Lorenzo
Architect Filippo Brunelleschi
Florence Italy. 1428
These columns show the use of proper proportion that characterized renaissance architecture. The columns and arches are great and solid looking, which also characterized the early renaissance period. This church was commissioned by the Medici family. Most of their members were buried there.
ROMANTICISM
Tumblr media
Liberty leading the people
Painter Eugene Delacroix
France, 1830
This is a major example of how this movement was influenced by the french revolution. You can see suffering in the faces of the people pictured here. one of the characteristics of this movement was the emphasis of emotion and we can perceive clearly the emotions in this painting.

Portfolio #4 SCAMPER
Tumblr media
This is the layout of buttons in our call bell. The main issue with this design is the position of the light switches. The pain button rings to the RN’s phones. The water, toilet and nurse button ring to the CNA’s phones. We often get calls from patients who were just trying to either turn the light on or off. I currently work the night shift and we get a lot of unintentional calls in the middle of the night from patients who were trying to watch the tv, and to find the TV button they wanted to turn their lights on, missed the button and instead they called us. Now, this is not a huge issue, certainly not a safety issue. It can however be a waste of time because we have to go into their rooms and turn the call light off, otherwise it will forever ring to us and the front desk. Another reason why this design should be modified is because our unit uses this data ( # of patients’ calls) to measure RN and CNA rounding success. I would modify this design by rearranging some buttons and eliminating others. This is what I would design:
Tumblr media
I would enlarge the PAIN button and place it on the very top of the call bell. In this design I colored the pain button red but with further analysis, blue or green would be a better choice. I would eliminate the nurse button because it has the same function as the water and toilet button. I would leave the water and toilet buttons and place them next to the pain button. All these three buttons fall in a similar category, calling for help. I would arrange the speaker in between the “call for help” area and the rest to have a palpable separation. These changes  would be helpful if patients, for example, wake up with chest pain in the dark, can’t see the buttons but know that the pain button is the larger one at the very top and above the speaker grille. I would also get rid of the numbers to change the channels because I think a minimal design is best for patients to follow.
In the Naccarella article its mentioned that a “good design is one that accommodates everyone to an acceptable level of satisfaction”. This call light does not accommodate blind patients. The pain, water, toilet, channel, volume, mute and TV buttons could have braille to accommodate these patients.

Portfolio #3
COLOR/LINE
Tumblr media
These are my favorite earrings. I like wearing black clothes. I like black clothing because it slims you down. So, I would usually choose a bright pair of shoes, a colorful bag, or other accessories that can add some color to my outfit. These earrings are a warm red tone, almost coral. That color makes me feel happy and somehow energized. I use it in every season, I feel like it goes well in the summer too. in warm weather it can be paired with a light white summer dress or a off white blouse. I tend to not wear red for clothing because it overwhelms me, its such a strong color. Just a pinch of it its enough for me. I also like the vertical red lines in the design, it gives me a sense of order and it draws the eyes toward my shoulders. I have wore this earrings with an off shoulder sweater for that reason.
PATTERN/TEXTURE
Tumblr media
For this element, I chose my favorite throw pillow. I specially love that fuzzy feel to it. The material adds warmth. This texture makes me feel Im in a cozy environment. I often rest my head or elbow on it. It is fluffy. Its so soft on my skin that its the only throw pillow I lay my face on. When I just happen to have it next to me, I find myself constantly running my fingers through the patterns, playing with the fibers and just feeling the fuzziness. It is soothing. Overall, this pillow its perfect for a warm relaxing afternoon nap!
EXPERIENCE
Tumblr media
This is the area rug in my living room. I, for some reason, prefer to sit on the floor. When Im watching TV, eating, interacting with friends or doing anything at all. If I get to choose, I will sit on the floor. So it was really important for me to get a nice cozy rug so I do not freeze my buns. I enjoy admiring the variety of colors and design of it. The fibers are so soft. I can, if i want to, lay my hands on it. The colors are bright but with a worn out feel to it. I like that the colors seem to be faded out in some areas, it makes me feel like it is not a burden to keep up. We got this rug not too long ago, barely a month ago, but when it was already on the floor underneath the furniture and we started to make use of it, it did not feel like a stranger addition to the living room that we had to get used to. This rug fit in as if it had been part of the living room all along. It complemented the living room space and that makes me feel accomplished.

What is specially important about this design is that its features are focused on patients safety. This design is user friendly. all the buttons have a picture of the function so its easy to utilize.
Amongst the many features designed to facilitate patient transportation as well as patient’s repositioning. It has a bed exit alarm for those who are trying to get out of bed and are a high fall risk. one feature thats rarely used is the chair feature. Most patients will eat in bed and though we have a bed side table that can be position over the bed for ease, this feature allows the patients to assume a sitting position which is more natural when we eat. The wheels lock for safety and the bed has four rails up. we usually will use three rails up if we are afraid our patients will jump out of bed but having the four rails up is considered a restraint. If i had to choose my favorite feature it will be the bed alarm that connects to your phone.
Images to convey:
1- A confused patient trying to get out of bed, the alarm going off and a bunch of nurses rushing to the room to prevent this patient from getting injured.
2- A patient being transported in the bed to another area in the hospital to undergo a procedure or a test.
3- Two nurses using the Trendelenburg position setting to bust a patient that is obese.
4- A patient sitting up in bed, with the bed set to the chair setting, eating breakfast.
5- An RN using the weight feature in the morning without waking up the patient to document the patient’s daily weight.
6- A patient using the raise/ lower the head/ foot of the bed for their own comfort.
Since the design I picked out is a bed its difficult to thing of other objects to represent why this bed has a good design. a phone can be given to the audience where one of them is connected to the bed exit alarm, their phone will ring an they will be able to see the patients room in the screen, I feel like this will give the audience a sense of how important this feature is.
In the Eagle article its mentioned how nurses are not always taken into account when health care design decisions are being made. I think we all understand the importance of having the influence of nurses’ perspectives when designing products or infrastructure that directly affect how we provide care for our patients.

The design problem I chose is NOISE REDUCTION. The reason why this problem resonates more with me is because I work the night shift. As we all know patients do not really sleep all night long. I work in a Cardiothoracic floor and we have patients that are in a lot of pain and some with post op arrhythmias. They usually can't get much sleep and having loud noises outside their rooms is really irritating to them and frustrating. This a picture of the station where we prepare our meds, next to it it's the Pyxis and the door to the left is the clean supply room. This "med station" is one of three. They are located in the hallways, across from this stations we have rooms. Patients have complained several times about the noise in the hallways at night. So when safe to do so, we close their doors hoping they won't be able to hear the noise with the door closed. It doesn't always work because the Pyxis’s doors are sometimes hard to close and we got to really force some doors to close. The same goes with the med station where we prepare meds.
Considering the seven stages of the design process I would go as far back as the IDENTIFICATION stage of the process. Im pretty sure this design seemed like a good idea at first and having this station in the hallways is really of great help to us nurses when it gets busy because it's easily accessible and they are located within reasonable distance from each other so you won't need to walk far in the unit to find one. During the step of identification we can recognize problems by assessing the functionality of the design and address the flaws, they clearly did not see this design in terms of how it could affect patients.
To find a solution to this problem, using the SCAMPER, I would choose the action MODIFY. I would like to change the placement of this stations. I think they should be placed in the med room, away from patients rooms. If the Pixys and area to prepare meds are in a room then this can isolate the noises inside this room. We currently have one med room where we do not carry meds. We have syringes, blood draw supplies, a doppler, a bladder scanner and a crash cart. I think it would be a good idea to rearrange the location of these too. In conclusion, having this med station out in the hallway and across from patient's rooms is a bad idea. We should have them inside medication rooms away from patients rooms so the noise can be minimized. This project would be in the CREATIVITY hierarchy of design. The placement has to change completely, we might have to walk further to get our medications and that might cause resistance from some nurses, but it will be addressing the problem of excessive noise at night specially, which can impact patient healing positively, if solved.

This is a cabinet in my kitchen. The cabinet is next to the sink and above the breakfast bar and countertop. The issue with the way the flow of this kitchen was designed is that this one cabinet is practically imposible to reach. We initially had put glasses in that cabinet until we realized how inconvenient it was to reach and grab stuff from inside. I'm 5'2" and I have to lean in basically on top of the countertop to open the cabinet door to the right and grab glasses. Opening the cabinet from the breakfast bar side (left) is way easier, however, getting glasses in and out of the cabinet from that side it's impossible. So we decided to put some wine glasses we rarely ever use in that cabinet so we would virtually never had to open it. It is a waste of space because we have this big spacious cabinet where we can't put anything in. The cabinet itself it's beautiful and at first glance, one doesn't see the flaw in the placement of it. It is when you attempt to use it that the problem becomes clear.
