Note
I gave a brief remark on this in the replies, but this is itching me, cuz I see it at least once a week from the various comic artists I follow:
"I love your comics! Can you tell me how to make them please?"
And of course we all know the unrelenting truth: Practice practice practice - you want the medal, do the drills. But a brickwork foundation is a necessity. For some, as in Mod's case, theirs come from studying and emulating what they love, building their skill from observation. They also have a formidable ability to disassemble what they see, put it back together, and build with it without further thought. We ain't all like them though.
Some artists have very generously given tutorials on their art process - but layouts? Layouts are dependent on so many factors directly lined up with the narrative. You can certainly look up templates and copy visually, but unless the layout is conscientiously serving the purpose of conveying the story, it won't give you what you're looking for.
And if you want a hard-core tutorial on conveying stories via comics:
Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art by Scott McCloud
Get you a pdf.
For those who want something physical, used book online shops have copies cheap as $5. lf you're wanting a fresh copy bookshop.org has you covered (and keeps profits with independent book stores).
He starts digging into layout-specific matters in Chapter 3, but I deeply recommend reading it all.
Did I mention it's completely executed in comic format?
And that it's a study in a multicultural lens?
Give it a read y'all. It's hefty, but only because it's loaded with so much important knowledge.
Hi Modmad!
I wanted to send a note as a massive thank you for everything you do and make, your comics have become a massive source of inspiration to me. Its so amazing to see someone else with a sketching type of style in their art, which is really something I dont see a lot out there, so its pretty cool. I've found the courage/confidence to start really delving into chronological art as well and honestly not sure i would've gotten to that point otherwise =]]
I also was also curious if you dont mind, how do you plan the compositions for the comic pages you create, if you do plan them? I've been stuck in the sort of pannel/strip format for a while and they way you break borders with the art itself to create a flow across the page has stuck out as something really unique and cool as a way to bring the characters on the page to life in a very stellar way. I also apologize if this question is on an faq somewhere that I didn't see as well!
All this to say, your stuff is awesome and thank you so much. i have been binge reading and working through it all slowly bc you clearly a mad(mod) genius ahaha
Thank you for your time!

gosh, not sure how to answer it'd take a while. sometimes I put my process on patreon, but I'm not very good at explaining how I do the layout of comics- what I can say is that I've learned by reading lots and lots and LOTS of different kinds of comics. I suggest getting out there and trying new things! comics from different countries and genres from your usual, comics from a different point in time can give a lot of insight too- get out there and start digging!
as for the sketching that's great! I love sketches, and it's really nice to know that people are enjoying mine. let's keep making and learning together!

"The whole-home rift-a-mal!"
My piece for the LimboLane Zine, hosted by @echobsilly and @kiwicartwheels !! The site will be going live on the 31st, so keep an eye out! I love @limbolanegamese and this game touched me so deeply I'm so happy I could make something for it. :o) Here's some close-up shots I took since Tumblr compression really did a number on this one:

My contribution to the Down Limbo Lane Zine!
You should go take a look, it's a trove of absolutely gorgeous work in a very cleverly laid out format. The color palettes alone have me floating through for over an hour.

I love Bauhauzzo, and the lovely amounts of pun that went into his name, design, concept, and commentary on the art and design world.
I would happily sit and weep with him at the Everything that is and was and will be.
#bauhauzzo#great god grove#my stuff#self i am banning you from text integration for both of our sanity#could i have strapped myself in for a true dedication to the bauhaus design style without a vector program? sure.#but i don't hate myself that much

Can Cobigail walk/hop/fly around? Or is she rooted to the ground, and everyone just comes to visit when it's time to close the rift?
I think she can hop around on her base and walk around like a scary bug with all her arms
