So we know that Peter Stamatin quotes Psalm 91 (90):5-8 after adopting Grace, but in my translation adventures I found out that most translations... of the Bible... are wrong?

"You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday." That's the English (NIV, but KJV is similar) translation.

The Septuagint never mentions any plagues. It's "[...] ἀπὸ πράγματος ἐν σκότει διαπορευομένου, ἀπὸ συμπτώματος καὶ δαιμονίου μεσημβρινοῦ." This is where my one year of university Ancient Greek classes come in.

Pragmatos means "thing" in a figurative sense, symptoma (gen. -atos) means "anything that has befallen one", so a symptom but not necessarily connected to disease (in latin Vulgata it's "incursus", a rushing attack), and daimon... well, that's just a demon. I don't know a lick of Hebrew so I can't check that version.

I noticed that because Peter quoted the correctly translated Church Slavonic version. In the subsequent dialogue with the Haruspex, he muses on what could that "thing" be, saying that it's not something living, not a spectre, but a thing.

I was not expecting to have to translate the fucking Septuagint for a Pathologic autistic hyperfixation venture, but let's fucking go?? I guess??

I'm halfway done with day 7. My doc is 360 pages long, it has 100 753 words. I can confidently say I understand a good bit of russian now. I can work mostly without translators and dictionaries, so I do everything at a much better pace.

I also translated the spoken dialogues of the three main heroes and the sand pest, maybe you'll find it somewhat interesting, here you gooo

I have a question for russian speakers of the pathologic fandom:

a messenger comes to Artemy to announce the Inquisitor's arrival, and he can respond with this:

"Жало попроще, ага? На лоб вон печать поставь себе [...]"

I have no trouble with understanding the second part, but wtf does "жало" mean in this context? It has to be some sort of slang. I'd be very grateful for any help

I usually have no issue with finding slang meanings of certain words or phrases online, but this one is tough

I have another piece of translation trivia for you pathologic nutsos

In English, on the night of day 3, Artemy can mention to Lara that he "Served as a medic for a while", refering to his brief military service.

*extremely incorrect loud buzzer*

He doesn't say "medic", or even "combat medic" in Russian. He uses the word Фельдшер, or Feldsher, which is a very specific thing.

A Feldsher is (or rather was) a mid-level (that is, without university education) medical practitioner. They don't have the same authority as doctors, but can perform certain operations or diagnostics. Historically, it was a non-combative position in the Russian Army and fleet. They even made a labor union in 1905!

It gives historical context to the entire setting, because Feldshers are mostly assossiated with the late 19th to early 20th century - the term is anachronistic (I guess that's why it was omitted in English) Edit: The term is still generally used in Russia, as pointed out in the comments, though the current and historical meaning are slightly different. We still have some Feldshers in Poland, as the only country in the EU where that position is legally recognized.

It also makes so much sense, given Artemy's situation - he never finished university but did have some prior knowlegde, so it would be reasonable for him to serve, as it was a common practice back then.

Translation of Patho 2 from Russian to Polish update for whom it may concern:

I just began day 3. I'm about 160 google doc pages in, with 45,407 words, 47 annotations (though some of them are silly). I'm pretty sure I will be fluent in Russian by the end of this debacle, in like 20 years lol

I'm having such a wildly different views on some of the characters now. Artemy is a lot more harsh but laid back. Daniil is less of an asshole, but simultaneously more of an asshole (he has multiple little quips that just disappear in English. Like on day one he addresses Artemy by name). Clara is an absolute unhinged demon. Everyone in the Town is more racist. Aspity still sometimes is the slay cunt she was in classic. Religion is everywhere.

Language really shapes thought. If you have the possibility, engage with the original text.
