I feel like this is an unpopular opinion, but more people should read incomplete/unfinished/in-progress fanfics.

I've noticed this huge trend where creators on tiktok and tumblr who will be explaining how to use Archive Of Our Own to new users and they always say "and make sure to scroll down and click completed only" or how people will go out of their way to mention they only read completed fics 'because they were traumatized when they forgot to check the dates and didn't realize this fic hadn't been updated since 2012'.

The thing is - I think by not engaging with and/or actively avoiding writer's WIPs readers are potentially adding to the aggregate of abandoned works. Now this obviously isn't the case for all abandoned fics, anything from major life events, to loss of interest, to getting busy can be a reason for a fic getting abandoned - but at least on some level I just know that writers are quitting while they're ahead when they aren't garnering any response or feedback because reading WIPs has become unpopular. If you're worried about reading something that hasn't been updated since 2012 then you can use the date updated function to sort out old fics.

Anyways, support your favorite fanfic writers by engaging with their WIPs.

This is why I will always prefer Narnia to LoTR. I always found it extremely ironic that though Tolkien had a wife & 4 daughters, there was almost no female presence in his books, while Lewis was a bachelor for most of his life and Narnia was filled with wonderfully rounded female characters of all sorts.

I always kind of laugh when people get into the “Susan’s treatment is proof that C.S. Lewis was a misogynist” thing, because:

Polly and Digory. Peter and Susan. Edmund and Lucy. Eustace and Jill. 

Out of the eight “Friends of Narnia” who enter from our world, the male-to-female character ratio is exactly 1/1. Not one of these female characters serves as a love interest at any time. 

The Horse and His Boy, the only book set entirely in Narnia, maintains this ratio with Shasta and Aravis, who, we are told in a postscript, eventually marry. Yet even here, the story itself is concerned only with the friendship between them. Lewis focuses on Aravis’ value as a brave friend and a worthy ally rather than as a potential girlfriend–and ultimately, we realize that it’s these qualities that make her a good companion for Shasta. They are worthy of each other, equals. 

In the 1950s, there was no particularly loud cry for female representation in children’s literature. As far as pure plot goes, there’s no pressing need for all these girls. A little boy could have opened the wardrobe (and in the fragmentary initial draft, did). Given that we already know Eustace well by The Silver Chair, it would not seem strictly necessary for a patently ordinary schoolgirl to follow him on his return trip to Narnia, yet follow she does–and her role in the story is pivotal. Why does the humble cab-driver whom Aslan crowns the first King of Narnia immediately ask for his equally humble wife, who is promptly spirited over, her hands full of washing, and crowned queen by his side? Well, because nothing could be more natural than to have her there. 

None of these women are here to fill a quota. They’re here because Lewis wanted them there. 

Show me the contemporary fantasy series with this level of equality. It doesn’t exist.

I'm super excited to return from fall break. I have always been an avid reader, but reading is really hard for my students with MSD. HOWEVER, if there is something my students love it is competition and movies.

So I made a deal with them. If they read ONE book over fall break and can tell me something they liked about it, we'll have an all day movie day. It can be anything--a comic book, a graphic novel, a picture book, non fiction, fiction, audio book, storyline online video... Just something to get them reading.

One of my newest students asked to walk beside me going out to the buses after issuing this challenge. I, of course, said "Sure!". Now, this student honestly does not seem to enjoy reading aloud or other language arts activities. But he can't say no to a challenge.

So he asked me "Ms, this reading thing--will we have to do work all day if not enough of us do the reading challenge?"

And I said "Yup! That's the deal we made!"

"And we only have to read one?"

"That's right!"

"Then I'm definitely doing that!"

And, I dunno. I just felt really good about it. I'm hoping that by them having the option to make a choice about what they read and being celebrated for it, maybe, just maybe, they might find they like it.

Emerging from my hole to throw in my thoughts of the Sky and Breath cover 😬

My eyes immediately went to Hunt’s wings and the first thing I thought of was how they kinda look like gargoyles??? The grey colors, the granite look to the carvings, it’s giving some sort of rock structure.

I gasped at the different eye colors. It threw me for such a loop that I just know CC2 is going to have mad plot twists and reveals. We don’t know a lot about Hunt, but we can gather that he’s got identity issues. I wonder if there’s a deeper internal crises of Hunt dropping his first name—Orion. These two identities are warring, and there’s going to be some hidden power to Hunt.

The left side of his face is serving a fuck ton of spoilers with zero context and it’s going to drive me to madness. Look how he’s shadowed. WHAT IS THE REASON!?

His posture is making me Think ™️. One arm is loose at his side, ensconced in lighting. The other is lifted and holding a snake ready to take a lil snacky snack out of someone. I thought about The Viper from book 1, but there’s definitely going to be some deeper meaning to the snake. Sjm has used the ouroboros in all of her books, whether indirectly in Throne of Glass (Abraxos as the snake who holds the world in its coils—this is a bit of a stretch, but the ouroboros is depicted as a snake) or naming it out right in Wings and Ruin. Sjm’s use of the ouroboros in Wings and Ruin is a loose interpretation of what it truly means, but she always refers to it. I don’t think it’s much of a stretch to theorize she’s going to introduce some similar idea in Crescent City.

Honestly, there’s sooo much to say about snakes in general. There’s the shedding of skin and becoming one’s true self, which when tied with Hunt’s identities, is not entirely out of the question.

It looks like embers are floating around him, so I wonder if we’re going to venture into the more war-torn parts of the world in this book.

Tbh, this is not only relegated to 'hard' drugs. My dad's drug of choice was weed, and give he started abusing substances at age 9, by the time he took his life when he was 45, it had caused unfathomable damage to his brain, his body, and his relationships. But yeah, just tell me that I want more people incarcerated because I believe the marijuana industry is just as/even more damaging as the tobacco industry.

I know people shouldn’t be in jail for drugs but god, does it make me uncomfortable how much people on the left or in progressive spaces trivialize hard drug use. I just logged out of a group chat because of several people talking about how fun and great it all is and I’m sitting there like ok....my aunt literally got all of her teeth pulled out recently because of drug abuse but sure, you must be a Republican if you think drugs aren’t a fun little thing to do, right 🙄

During Snape’s year as headmaster Poppy doesn’t get much sleep. She’s constantly healing students, sending potions out every which way and working to undermine the headmaster and his awful detentions. So it’s not a suprise that she doesn’t notice how often students randomly appear in beds where there hadn’t been any before, or how her potions stores never seem to diminish. That the death eater siblings are always called away from the hospital before too long and how her supplies never run low. When students show up already partially healed or treated but not remembering who did it she puts it down to concusions and kind students or teachers. She always just figured it was helpful house elves and slughorn finally becoming a competent brewer. In a sense she’s right. Well except for slughorn, he’s still not any good at brewing. It’s only after the war is won and Snape’s allegiances are fully known do all the dots connect in her mind. The boy she’d helped treat when he was spelled down the stairs, or locked in a broom closet. The young spy who came back from meetings with a blank stare and arms held at awkward angles. The teacher who’d always provided her with the best potions and joked with her while she sewed him up after another tangle in the forbidden forest saving the hides of some reckless 7th years. The headmaster who was so easy to trick and get around and whose underlings were bumbling idiots that never caught a student. Her friend, Severus Snape

My grandfather has done the 1st twice now and I know he would be game to do the second if it wasn't for my grandmother being his impulse control.

Living in a town of car nuts I've noticed that there's two schools of thought on car passion projects:

"I've looked forever for this car and I've finally found it in a restorable condition so I'm gonna spend thousands of dollars and several years of my life painstakingly restoring it to a point where it looks like it's brand new"

"I just picked up this shitty old beater in a junkyard for $50 and I'm gonna do the stupidest shit imaginable to it and laugh as I drive it around and see people cringe as I pass"

‘it’s normalized to sexualize girls in their early teens in the series! we can’t judge the characters!’ oh shit really? is that why there’s a whole ass scene where Ned calls Robert out for sleeping with a 14/15 year old? is that why even Viserys comments on how young Dany is to be marrying Drogo? is that why GRRM specifically notes ‘it was her fourteenth nameday’ at the end of the chapter in which Dany realizes she’s pregnant? what do you think was the purpose of that line? you think that was just thrown in for kicks?

to begin with, their lungs are fragile, human things. they breathe in english city air, struggle in the cold months, carry rain and childish laughter inside them. until suddenly it’s dust, smoke, breathing out a ruined home inside a mass of mourning people. their tongues are coated in ash, and their breaths stutter in the damp train station air.

in narnia, their lungs fill up with winter, blood and soil.

edmund breathes in, and his lungs are full of shards of ice that crawl up his throat eagerly until he is choking on sugar and slowly melting snow.

susan breathes in, and her lungs are full of steel and wood resolve, birch roots and daffodils settling in with a fierce grip that makes her ache.

peter breathes out, and his lungs are iron-clad, with flames licking up the insides until all he feels is the fire trying to spill past his lips into his hands.

lucy breathes out, and pink petals break through wet soil in time with her breaths, her lungs full of spring and claws that tear their way across her tongue.

over time, their lungs adjust to narnian air, and it’s easy to breathe with all the roots and leaves inside them. they grow strong, so much more compared to the weak little things that used to flutter inside them.

they fall, and their lungs are so very empty, yet too heavy for a proper breath of rotten english wind. their inhales are shallow, broken, full of tears and pleas that dissipate before they hit the air. their brittle child bodies carry cracked marble lungs, hollow and abandoned inside grieving chests and no moss there to soothe the sharp edges. it hurts.

a year later, their home has shattered, is silent once again, lifeless underneath their feet. their lungs rest easier in familiar air, but never steady until narnia takes her first breath in years. she brings flowers, fire, crystal waters, iron and sharp edges back into their chests, and their laughter breathes life in turn. familiar roots snake through the holes inside and fill their chests. 

they don’t leave as suddenly this time, and their marble lungs wrap around home’s flowers even in england’s strange air. they breathe in london rain and breathe out narnian spring, petals drifting from their mouths into grey skies. it’s better.

they end. marble shatters in growing bodies, drives into painfully human shells and squashes the garden. susan, tasting tears and metal on her tongue, barely stops herself from climbing through the wreckage to try and dig for flowers. she wonders if it hurt at all for their last breaths to draw in glass and warped metal. they have been breathing through the weight of a world for so very long, she cannot help but think that her siblings welcomed it all with open arms. she closes her eyes and finds tender roots still spreading through her lungs. she breathes. it will be alright.

I think a common mistake people make about puns is that they often believe puns are meant to make people laugh. This is not so! The emotion that puns are meant to elicit isn’t joy, it’s rage.

I think the thing that worries me so much about this tumblr plus bullshit isn’t the fact that creators can put their stuff behind a pay wall - for everyday regular bloggers that’s fine! Do what you want I guess.

But fanfiction writers CANNOT do this. Point blank PERIOD!

And some might say “oh but Aeryn it’s a choice! You don’t have to do it!” And, yes I KNOW this. I know it’s a choice. But younger fanfic creators out there may not be aware of the absolute shit show that went down several years ago where people SUED fanfiction writers over their work. And that is dangerous for many reasons.

These companies that own the characters we love do. Not. Care. About us. They will sue us the second some fanfic creator unwittingly uses this paywall to gain money from their fanfiction works. That is illegal. You CANNOT do that. You cannot gain money from fanfiction Bc technically it isn’t yours. The characters and the worlds are not ours and if just one of us gets caught doing it tumblr will get sued and we all know they don’t have the money to fight them and tumblr will go poof.

This post isn’t meant to be rude or demeaning or condescending. I am just genuinely so so worried about this because if it takes off, tumblr as a fandom space is as good as gone. And as much as I call this place a “hell site” I do love it. I love the community I’ve built here and the friends I’ve made and I don’t want to lose it because of the IDIOTS at yahoo want more money.

*sigh* so - please complain to tumblr about this and hope to god it doesn’t actually happen. For all fanfic writers sake.
