That’ll teach Filia to doubt Lina’s eating ability. She sighed, resigning herself.
“Well. I was going to have the panna cotta with raspberry sauce and hot tea. Tiramisu doesn’t go well with tea, I find.”
She would look at the waiter. “Err, clear these out, please. Also, feel free to bring the bill for my two pastas, my drinks, and our desserts.” Best to clarify she expected the bill to be separate to the wait staff now that the onslaught was over.
Lina continued at her usual pace, downing plate after plate, bowl after bowl. After a few hours, she leaned back in her chair and sighed. She could not longer see Filia over the mountain of dishes. It was the best she had eaten in days.
“That was outstanding.” She patted her enlarged stomach. “So, dessert. What are you having? I think I’ll have the Tira Misu and a cup of coffee.” Lina was both speaking to Filia and the waiter who was in shock.

The reason Filia made the bet, other than to distract her dining companion, wasn’t what was initially brought to the table. It was that what was brought was only round one. Lina had ordered everything, after all, and as there were six types of pasta and five sauces she had thirty combinations, double the regular generous portions, coming her way. Plus the soups and appetizers!
She ate her own two orders at a reasonable pace, watching the show with grim fascination. Lina was always impressive in how much food she could pass away, but this had to be too much even for her, right? On the other hand, Filia would muse idly, Lina was known to rise in the face of culinary challenges.
The waiters were kept hopping, clearing plates to make room for more.
Lina laughed. After a while, she wiped a tear from her eye. She sighed and gave Filia a stern look. “You’re on.”
Her double portions arrived within a few minutes. As Filia had said, they were huge. Lina immediately dug in, not even pacing herself. She had eaten more for a snack on a daily basis. She cleared one bowl before Filia had taken even a few bites of her own.

“Hey, Filia! I saw this and thought of you!”
“Oh, thank you! I’m sorry, did I miss a human holiday or something?” She opened the present carefully so as to not disturb the contents any.

“Oh, I appreciate the offer and it smells delicious! I’m just saving room for my meal!”
“The portions are very generous here for the main courses! I’ve seen three people eating from the same bowl of pasta before! I’ll bet a silver piece that even you can’t finish all that you’ve ordered if they bring out double the regular size of their entire menu like you ordered!”
“Hey. Are you not hungry or something?” She waved a fork with a chunk of pork in front of Filia’s face. “I’ve offered to share this with you and all you do is decline. What’s with that?”
Lina was perturbed.

Filia managed a small laugh. “Oh but I want to have some of my home left standing. Jilles’ gunpowder accidentally igniting from sneeze-breath was enough damage thank you. It took two weeks of handymen in my house to fix it!”
She nearly accepted the offering but sensed a trap and declined. It would be just like Lina to demand she pay for at least half of the appetizers if she had so much as a nibble. Instead she politely declined and continued to nibble her bread.
“Well, that’s good. You always enjoyed those things. I just wish there was a way for me to write you so we could keep in touch more regularly!”
Lina laughed. It seemed Filia had her share of problems too. “If you needed holes in your walls, you should have had me redecorate for you.”
“Oh you know. The usual. Travelling, eating, pillaging.” Lina was intentionally vague. Filia had never approved of her demeanor. She would approve even less now.
Appetizers were brought. Lina dug in with haste, only offering Filia bites in between her own gorging and always with a full mouth.

Filia had managed to snatch a pair of the crusty pieces of bread and set them on her plate defensively close to her body and used her knife to get a tiny pat of butter for them. “I was only talking about things in a general sense. The explosions I was blamed for or dragon hunters coming for me or Val’s occasional laser breath when he sneezes making giant holes in the house make better stories, but I wanted you to know I’m reasonable happy and successful first and still have the stories for later!”
The dragon nibbled on her bread, taking a moment to check her temper. She was getting better about not losing her cool at the drop of a hat. Being a mother had helped. “At any rate, Lina, how have you been? What have you been up to?” And where are all of your companions was the unspoken question she wanted to ask but felt would be too much.
How mundane.
Drinks arrived followed by bread. Lina tied a napkin around her neck and devoured most of the appetizer.
“That sounds boring, Filia.” Lina spoke with a full mouth. She couldn’t pretend to be interested. Lina downed half her mead and leaned back. Vacations used to sound nice. They were welcome when times were busy.

“I meant as dessert after we ate.” Filia ordered a much smaller meal, just a simple pasta in meat sauce. “As for my shop--I’m doing well, thank you! Antiques and pottery are doing much better than the weaponry side. I’ve trusted my employees with the operations for a week so I can get more stock!”
She fiddled with her napkin. “I needed a little vacation anyway. Fortunately Val is a very advanced child and I can safely leave him in Gravos’ care.”
“Cake? I thought we were getting grub?” Lina looked at Filia, confused.
“Of course, I won’t turn down free dessert!” Lina gestured at the entire menu for the waiter, demanding double portions.
Leaning back, Lina questioned Filia. “So, Filia. Have you just been tending to your shop? What’s new?”

“Unfortunately I only have enough travel money for myself since I wasn’t expecting to bump into you.” After a moment of mental calculation she would add, “Though I will pay for one slice of cake for each of us. Slice. Not the entire cake. Dessert is nice with tea and company!”
“Hey! You see this place? They have Dragon Cuisine! It’s a shame it takes…” Lina’s voice trailed, realizing what she was saying and to whom. “But yeah! Noodles it is!” They reached the shop and entered. Lina found the nearest table. She settled into a creaky chair and signaled the waiter.
Turning back to Filia, she beamed, “What’s your budget? You are paying, right?”

“That’s why I assumed you would not be coming with me. This isn’t near my home area either, but the last time I came through here there was a lovely noodle shop a few blocks down. They had everything from spaghetti to broth-based dishes.”
They would pass a restaurant that specialized in dragon cuisine in town but Filia would boycott it for obvious reasons. Plus noodles were on the inexpensive side (good for her budget) and filling (good for her tummy).
“Seriously?! A festival without food? How horrible! I guess it wouldn’t hurt to grab something before you go. I’m starving!” Her stomach growled as she rubbed it. “What’s good around here?”

“Well, no. Fair food tends to be greasy and oil doesn’t go well with fragile antiques. But we could have some tea and lunch together to catch up if you have time before we part.”
“Nothing too much. Just on the hunt for some seasonal grub. Does this fair of yours have festive food?”

“I’m on my way to an antique fair to try and score some stock for my shop at a fair price. What about you, Miss Lina? It has been quite a while!”
“Hey Filia! What are you doing all the way out here?”

This is not actually going to be a crack blog. I just couldn’t keep myself from goofing off on April Fool’s day with Crack Xellos being so cute!
I’m not counting this as my debut, really. That will be later. Please wait for me to be ready! v(^o^)v♪ ))
