“I will drink to that.” He tipped an imaginary glass in Mack’s direction. Had they been at a bar he would have clinked the glass and downed the liquor, but he was on the clock still and while there was a lot that people could critique about his working methods, professionalism was not one of them. At least in the sense of drinking on the job. He took a deep breath in and looked Mack directly in the eye. “No. Not even close.” He hated saying it…it felt like admitting he couldn’t do something, but he was trying. “Everytime I think I’m close, something else comes along and messes up that theory and then I’m back to square one.” He bit his bottom lip in a moment of thought. “I will find out. I’ll do whatever I have to in order to find out.”

Mack’s lips curved upwards into a smile when she saw Brian raise an imaginary glass. The guard used her power to make it seem as if they really did have glasses in their hands. “Don’t worry, even with it being imaginary I still did it to where it’s water in the glass.” She said winking at the scientist. Mack let out a sigh and shrugged, she didn’t know what exactly it was that she was expecting him to say, it wasn’t that she minded that Alexa didn’t have a power, she just wanted to know why she didn’t. “Isn’t that how it always goes? We get close to something and then just like that it’s taken from us. I just... I guess I just want to know if I did something wrong.” She admitted.

At least Mack was finding this amusing. He knew for a fact that there were other members of staff that would have his head for being so ‘insensitive’ and ‘unprofessional’. “I’ll be sure you’re the first to get the call.” This was friendly enough. He appreciated that. “I like to think I’m nothing if not honest. Abrupt in execution maybe, but always honest,” he said with a smaller shrug. That was partially true. His opinions on people were always from a place of truth and honesty…everything else he did…not so much.

There weren’t many people on Lake Grimstone’s payroll that would appreciate the conversation that these two were having and frankly Mack didn’t care. She enjoyed honesty even if it was a little on the harsh side to some. “Honesty is the best policy,” Mack replied with a chuckle, she liked to think she was honest at least where it mattered. There were things she kept to herself, but she was honest for the most part. “So... in the spirit of honesty, is your team any closer to figuring out why my daughter has no powers?”

Brian gave a single shrug and slumped back into his seat. “She just sort of looked at me for a moment, started welling up, said ‘okay’ and then left pretty quickly.” He shrugged again, looking over at Mack. “It is what it is.” He gave her the closest he could to a genuine smile. The two of them had an interesting relationship, stemming mostly from the anomaly that was Mack’s daughter. He always considered it best to be on her good side. She was at least easier to befriend than her other half. “I don’t think I meant it specifically to her. I just have an intolerance to bullshit and all I seem to get from these people is bullshit.”

She couldn’t help but laugh at the situation. “Next time you decide you want to make someone cry, please call me first so I can get front row seats.” The guard said with a chuckle. Brian was one of the few people that Mack was able to stand, there were no games with him and she appreciated that, especially when it came to her daughter. “See, I don’t get that, why try to feed people bullshit that is definitely not believable? People should just be honest, it’s not that hard.”

Mack blinked a couple of times and let out a chuckle. “And what did the poor sucker that you said that to say?” She asked the scientist. Mack and Brian couldn’t be considered friends, but they knew each other because of her daughter and while at times she disliked the probing, she didn’t dislike the guy and she figured that he didn’t dislike her either, or at least she wasn’t the person that he least liked in Lake Grimstone.” 

“Out of all the residents in both Park and Point, I think I like you the least.” He shook his head and forced a sigh. “No, I’m not supposed to say that, but yes, I have said it anyway.”

“I’m sorry. I-I didn’t mean…” Natasha trailed off, unsure how to defend herself. She wasn’t even sure anyone could hear her, her voice traveling no higher than a whisper. The woman was a guard, Nat recognized that much from around the town and the time she’d spent with Kaden. A grimace flashed over her face as she considered the possibility of punishment for her outburst, causing Natasha to glance quickly down at her shoes. “I’m all right. Was anyone hurt? Everyone can still hear, right?” It may have seemed like an odd question but Natasha knew better than anyone what she was capable of. 

Mack immediately looked around to see if there was anyone hurt, it seemed like most were okay and she could still hear, there was a slight ringing in her ear but it wasn’t that bad. “We’re fine, everyone seems okay.” She assured the woman. “We should be used to powers acting up.” She muttered. “The real question is are you okay?” Could Mack be a little cold at times? Of course, but she wasn’t heartless. “Do you need me to call someone for you?”

Work was calling but surely no one expected her to be able to do her job without first getting coffee and so she was at the coffee shop getting ready to order her usual. The guard tapped her foot against the wood floor wondering what was taking the person in front of her so long to order. “Come on” she muttered, mostly because she was already late and needed her coffee. The woman was getting ready to turn around and walk away when she heard a wail and then glass shattering around her. “What the actual fu--” her words trailed off as she heard the woman in front of her apologize. “If service was not up to par you could have filled out a complaint form,” Mack said. “Are you okay?” It seemed like work had started for her.

Natasha’s throat felt raw and sore in a way she had never known possible. They had been pushing her exceptionally hard the past few weeks to take her power - her scream, farther and farther until she left the training facility as she did today: croaky and light headed. With heavy limbs, she pushed her way into the coffee shop in search of something warm with honey. When it was her turn at the counter, Nat was frustrated to find that she had no voice and could produce no sound no matter how hard she tried. She opened her mouth and closed it twice, brow furrowed as she swallowed thickly and tried again, pushing hard at her vocal chords to produce a whisper, only this time she produced a powerful sound. To her horror, a tiny wail rose from her throat, small but strong enough to shatter the glasses behind the counte. Natasha covered her mouth in shock, mouthing an apology to the barista. “I’m so sorry.” She croaked, looking around to the person next to her, avoiding their gaze.

Wentworth arms wrapped themselves around mackenzie waist as his chin rested on her shoulder “your mums got a point here, if were gonna do this the water gonna be freezing.” He was used to the English weather so it was like being back home. “Do you think imagining the water at the bottom being warmer could work?” He whispered to Mack making sure it was possible before mention it to Alexa. “Anyway aren’t you forgetting something? You have noticed the present at the end of the table” he said making a birght pink present appear

Alexa groaned at her mother’s words, of course, she knew that it would be cold but she didn’t care because all she wanted was to not be the only person her “age” that had not lived through that experience. “Please papi” she said giving him her best puppy dog eyes. She knew that if her dad was on board then her mother would be too. And then her dad mentioned presents and the young girl’s eyes lit up. “Presents!” She shouted as she ran to the bright pink present. The girl tried to not tear the paper to shreds but she was too excited. When she finally got to the present her eyes lit up and she began to jump up and down. “How did you know that this was what I wanted? It’s perfect. Gracias!”

Of course, Alexa would plead with Wentworth and not her, their daughter knew them very well and knew that Wentworth would be the easiest one to convince. Not that Mack would say no to Alexa, especially not on such a special day. “Maybe, but if not she can handle it,” Mack whispered into her boyfriend’s ear. The guard smiled wide at her daughter’s reaction to the gift she had received. “Your dad is a mind reader” she joked. “We’re glad you like it, Princesa. Te amamos muchisimo.”

Wentworth couldn’t believe it had already been another year, he could still remeber clearly the first time he laid eyes on Alexa, his smile from that day never faded in her presence. Wenty had been cooking breakfast in the kitchen with Mackenzie when their little dork walked in.

As soon as she entered Wenty walked around with food “Happy birthday buttercup.” He kissed the side of her head before walking back round to Mackenzie side. Leaning back against the counter he watched the loves of his life. He jolted upright when Mack asked for his reassurance “…right” but he gave Alexa a wink that said he let her do whatever she wanted in her birthday.

The smile on her face grew wider when her father winked at her. She knew that her parents wouldn’t say no to her, especially not her dad. “It won’t be anything… too dangerous,” Alexa said with a smirk. “I just want an adventurous day.” She added as she skipped over to the table and began to pick food off of her parent’s plates. “The first thing I want is us all to jump off the waterfall together.” 

She knew that more than likely her parents had already done that but she had never done it and people made it seem like it was a rite of passage, a rite of passage that she should do now that she was older. 

The looks between her daughter and her boyfriend were one that Mackenzie knew quite well. It was their little signals to let her know that she had been outnumbered, not that she would fight them on this, it was Alexa’s birthday after all so unless she wanted to do something that put her life in danger Mack would agree. 

The guard was taking a sip of her coffee when she heard Alexa’s request and she groaned. “Of course you want to do that.” She said as she put her coffee cup down. She, of course, had jumped many times but she was much older and the weather was much warmer. “The water must be freezing,” mack said in an attempt to persuade her daughter to go in another direction.

It was their daughter’s birthday and Wentworth and Mack were preparing to celebrate the big day. They hadn’t celebrated too many birthdays with Alexa, in reality, it had only been two and it was never easy for Mack to plan the day for them. She had been in the kitchen with Wenty when she heard the door open and immediately she smiled at the sound of her daughter’s voice. 

Alexa’s question both worried her and put her mind at ease. On one hand, she could relax and not have to plan the day but on the other hand, Alexa was Mack’s and Wenty’s daughter which meant that she probably wanted to do something dangerous. “Well, that depends on what you want to do... right?” She said turning to Wenty.

Alexa couldn’t believe that another year had passed and that she was another year older. The young girl had made plans with Mira, but before she could go out with friends she needed to spend the day with her parents. To someone, her age, or at least the age she looked, spending time with their parents on their birthday might not be ideal, but Alexa was actually looking forward to it. 

“Mum, papi!” She called out as she marched into her father’s place. This was the first time in months that Alexa was not thinking about how much it sucked to not be able to leave Lake Grimstone. “So… do you guys have a plan for today or do I get to pick what I want to do?”

Alexa meant the world to Mack, there was nothing that she wouldn’t do for her and the last thing she ever wanted to do was let her down, but at the moment it seemed like that was what she had done. Mack promised her freedom and yet that freedom had been taken away from them. “Alex,” her voice was soft, Alexa was the only person that got to see that side of her. “It’s okay to be upset and to say that this is all fucked up, though, I would rather that you didn’t use those words.” She said offering her a smile. “We will find a way to fix this though.” 

“We’ll get out of here and you’ll get to see the real world, we can go wherever you want.” 

Her mother had said those words to her just a few days ago when they had been packing and now all that seemed to have just been a dream. Alexa had never seen the real world, not in person at least. She had always only seen pictures of beautiful places that she hoped one day she would get to visit. “My friend says that this is all really fucked up and I have to agree with them. I just wanted to see the real world and now it looks like the real world is going to go up in flames.” She said letting out a shaky breath. “The images… they still replay at night,” Alexa admitted before realizing that it seemed like she was moping. “But everything will be okay, right?” She tried to smile even though the last thing she wanted was to smile.

Mackenzie didn’t know what to think about everything that was going on in Lake Grimstone, she had been so sure that by now she and her family would be out in the real world, but that didn’t seem to be the case any time soon. The guard had attempted to keep her current routine, after all, there wasn’t much more she could do. She continued to work and trust TRP, only not as much as she had when she first arrived at Lake Grimstone. These were all things that were going through her head when her name called at the coffee shop. The woman moved to get her order when she bumped into someone that she knew quite well, Keegan Gillmore. “Hey, no worries. I didn’t know that you brought your work home or should I say to the coffee shop.” She said to the scientist. 

Keegan was sitting at the café, books all over the table and her tablet in front of her, stylus hanging in the air as she mused over something. Reaching for her cup of coffee, she made a grimace as the cold liquid was felt. “Really should have bought my mug,” she muttered, missing the mug she used at the labs that kept her coffee hot for hours. “If only they would let us see the complete make-up of this new strand, it would be easier to help.” Since the news of the superflu had hit Grimstone, Keegan had been trying to work on that on the side, outside of her duties at the labs. Completely distracted, the woman got up to get another cup of coffee, something that would probably also be forgotten on the table, and narrowly avoided another customer. “My bad. I shouldn’t walk and work at the same,” she said with a smile.

Mack’s eyes were fixed on the screen of her phone that continued to play news clips of the superflu. The guard let out a sigh and shut her phone off when she heard Marcell’s voice. “Yeah, I did.” She said coldly. “So much for getting out of here today.” Her voice filled with disappointment. 

The day promised to be everything but ordinary but Marcelle wasn’t sure how it would go. She noticed a news alert on her phone. Looking up, she could see that she wasn’t the only one that had seen the news.

“Hey, have you seen this?” she said, grabbing the nearest person.

What ever Mack wasn’t saying had Wentworth worried, what had her mother done to her? Could it be that horrible that Mack doesn’t want to talk about it to this day? Whatever the case Mack had asked him to be patient and she didn’t ask for much “ you know I’m not good at being patient right? But I’ll try for you.” He said focusing on their intertwined hands “it just might mean someone needs to keep me distracted” he said playfully trying to brighten their mood.

Why was she so scared to talk to him about her mom? Because the last thing she wanted was for all of those emotions to come rushing back. It hadn’t necessarily been that her mom had harmed her in some way, she just hadn’t been a good mother, not after her father passed. “I know you’re not, but I also know that you love me and you will always put me and Alexa first.” She said smiling up at him. “Oh, are you offering to distract me?” She asked with a smirk on her lips. Mack wrapped her free arm around him and pulled herself up to place a kiss on his lips. “Te amo, corazon.” she whispered against his lips.

Wentworth listened when she told him to stop apologising, his hand moved to her cheek “how can I make it easier for you? Because I want to listen to you.” His eyes searching deep into hers. “Mack I’m not worried about how Alexa will feel about you because I know, and I’m always going to be on the side of caution when it comes to you and her when it comes to acting like your mother because I don’t know what she did. But what I am worried about is you. You may have everyone in Lake Grimstone fooled but I know this could eat you up of it was to happen.” He said stroking her arm. “ Thank god we’re not them. But they split up.”

Mack placed her hand on his cheek and smiled at her boyfriend, the man of her dreams. She didn’t doubt that he would be there for her no matter what and she knew that he wouldn’t judge her, but talking about her past was not easy for the guard. This was why she focused on her present and her future with their daughter. Mack slid her hand down his arm and when it reached his hand she intertwined their fingers. “I love you and I want to be as honest with you as I can be, just please be patient.”

Wenty laughed at her saying maybe a little “I know how i can get when I’m angry and I’m sorry you saw that” he apologised again, in his mind he couldn’t say sorry enough. “ I didn’t expect it to be easy for you to share, but if I know we can make sure Alexa never feels that way about you. That you and her are at hounds times better then you and your mum.” He breathed. “Look at how Blake and Jay used to be they have kids together. And they weren’t in a relationship.”

“Stop, just... you don’t need to apologize, I need to apologize. I should be able to talk to you about everything but communication isn’t always that easy for me.” Mack said with a shrug. “She won’t feel that way, I am nothing like my mother and I will never do the things that my mother did, so you don’t have to worry about that.” Mack assured her boyfriend. “The thing is that we are not Blake and Jay. And to be fair, they were together when she got pregnant.”
