RESPLENDENCEby Angus Cerini FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LATE NIGHT AT THE OLD FITZ
“Resplendence is an extraordinary rich and beautiful piece, at every level.”
- The Australian
A man struggles to understand his reality. He sits alone in a room assailed by the world around him. He does not know how to act, nor what impact his actions could possibly have. When he is faced with a situation that forces him to respond, what will it reveal? Probably nothing.
Resplendence, from multi-award winning playwright Angus Cerini (The Bleeding Tree), is an expressionistic response to the world in which we live, and the very nature of existence – powerful, nonsensical and beyond our control.
‘This is a daring and difficult work that wouldn’t get a look-in for a main stage season, but has already sent a buzz throughout the Melbourne theatre scene’ - Daily Review
Red Line Productions present the Sydney premiere of Resplendence, following a critically acclaimed season as part of the 2014 NEON festival at the Melbourne Theatre Company.
Directed by AACTA award nominee Nathan Lovejoy (Sammy J & Randy in Ricketts Lane, The Code, Deep Water, Clybourne Park) and featuring multiple Green Room nominee James O’Connell (Savages, Detroit, Hacksaw Ridge, The Secret River) this all-new production of Cerini’s Victorian Premier’s Literary Award winning play is one not to be missed.

RPG Productions is proud to present the Australian Premiere of BIG FISH 12 CHAIRS VERSION at Hayes Theatre Co from 18 April to 14 May 2017.
Book by John August Music & Lyrics by Andrew Lippa
RPG Productions is proud to present the Australian Premiere of BIG FISH 12 CHAIRS VERSION at Hayes Theatre Co from 18 April to 14 May 2017.
Based on the celebrated novel by Daniel Wallace and the acclaimed film directed by Tim Burton, BIG FISH centres on Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman who lives life to its fullest… and then some! Edward’s incredible, larger-than-life stories thrill everyone around him – most of all, his devoted wife Sandra. But their son Will, about to have a child of his own, is determined to find the truth behind his father’s epic tales.
Overflowing with heart, humour and spectacular stagecraft, BIG FISH is an extraordinary new Broadway musical that reminds us why we love going to the theatre - for an experience that's richer, funnier and bigger than life itself.
When BIG FISH was announced, Director Tyran Parke said “Big Fish promises to be magical. It features among others, a mermaid, a giant, a tribe of witches and a man shot out of a cannon and all will be achieved on the tiny Hayes Theatre stage. Rewritten since its original Broadway season and reconfigured into an ensemble production featuring twelve dazzling triple threats, the show balances magic and heart in equal measures.”
You feel like you're watching something deep and powerful, sourced by a work of fine literature, propelled into awareness by a potent film and, most crucially of all, a story that makes us feel we can control, if not transcend, the story at the end of our lives. - Chicago Tribune
Director Tyran Parke along with Producers RPG have assembled an amazing creative team who will contribute to the reimagining of BIG FISH including Musical Director Luke Byrne (The Events, Hamlet at Belvoir St), Choreographer Cameron Mitchell (Heathers, Mack and Mabel at Hayes), Designer Anna Gardiner (Blood Brothers – Hayes, Henry V, Bell Shakespeare Company) Designer Martelle Hunt (Parade - Present Tense, When the Rain Stops Falling – New Theatre) and Lighting Designer Matt Tunchon (Songs for a New World- Hayes).
Casting is now underway and details will be announced shortly.

A large map of OZ covered the stage while the actors were standing by. The overture starts. This is it. Mikayla Williams, as Glinda the Good Witch, delivered a perfect vocal performance as she descended from the sky by bubble and her perfection didn’t stop there.
The emerald last night for the opening of Packemin’s Wicked. A green lit archway directed you to the foyer where everyone was eagerly waiting for show to start.
A large map of OZ covered the stage while the actors were standing by. The overture starts. This is it. Mikayla Williams, as Glinda the Good Witch, delivered a perfect vocal performance as she descended from the sky by bubble and her perfection didn’t stop there. William’s was a shining beacon on stage. Her dulcet vocals were matched by her original take on the classic Galinda. She brought a heartfelt and youthful approach to the character, highlighting the pressures and confusion when Galinda is thrust into the world of responsibility of being ‘Glinda the Good Witch’.
Her green counterpart, played by Ashleigh O’Brien, delivered an enchanting vocal performance. Her younger Elphaba was defiant and full of teen angst but as her character matured so did O’Briens performance. O’Brien commanded the stage in Act 2 during her transformation into ‘The Wicked Witch of the West’. No Good Deed was a truly powerful moment as she channelled some killer riffs reminiscent of our very own Jemma Rix and Patrice Tipoki.
Linden Furnell’s Fiyero nailed the youthful arrogance but missed out on some of the charm during the characters Act 2 transformation. This was remedied by Wayne Scott Kermond’s vaudevillian Wizard who was cleverly choreographed and amusing.
Director Neil Gooding’s staging flowed nicely, particularly through fast paced transitions, however the large ensemble sometimes seemed cramped on the stage. A perfect balance of this was found during ‘One Short Day’ where actors were carefully placed to create a dense and exciting Emerald City. The true stand out moment in this show is the act one finale ‘Defying Gravity’ and boy did Packemin deliver, levitation and all. Gooding created some true magical moments during the show. In addition to the bigger sequences such as Defying Gravity, the transformation of the Tin Man was seamless and cleverly disguised.
For Good was touching and heart warming with simple ‘stand and sing’ blocking while the two witches were fixated on each other. A real sense of love and friendship.
Peter Hayward’s direction of the orchestra was top notch. The orchestra delivered an impressive and professional sound and matched the enthusiastic voices on stage.
Gooding created moments of real theatre magic that were almost indistinguishable from the professional tour. If you want to see what a group of young people who are passionate and training their craft then Wicked will provide you with some truly spellbinding moments.
