People—mostly the other children—often asked Pepa and Bruno about when they received their doors and gifts, long after everyone already knew all the details by heart. They didn’t ask Santiago, who wasn’t as fun a storyteller, and whose quiet healing wasn’t apparent until days later anyway. An involuntary vision and sudden storm were more exciting, especially when Pepa summoned a thunderhead for her audience and Bruno flashed his glowing eyes. They both left out the part where Bruno got so confused about what was happening, and Pepa so upset that he knew about her magic room before she did, that they both started crying. Years later, they had also stopped mentioning the moment that Santiago best remembered: when the three of them looked at the embossed letters on the doorknobs and realized one was a P for Pepa, not a J for Josefa. Pepa—who was only ever Josefa when she was in trouble and disliked sharing a name with the unpleasant Josefa Venegas—had traced a fingertip over the letter and beamed.

“You’re sure you don’t want to stay the night?” Agustín asked as Bruno slid into his sandals. “Yeah.” A side effect of the magic was that, if one of the Madrigals did anything unusual, the whole town knew within the day. Bruno had enough of that without anyone wondering what he was doing all night with two men who may as well have been married to each other. And, oh god, what if his hermanas asked him? What if Mamá did? Nope. Not risking it. “Gotta- family breakfast, you know.”

A short and sweet fic for @madrigaydays

Mariano finds himself going through strange feelings after spending time with Dolores. He had no idea who to turn to to talk to about this. Luckily Isabela was already headed his way to knock some sense into him.

Snippet of a fanfic I’ve been working on for the madrigaydays event, specifically prompt 3: connect

might suck but oh well here we go

Isabela strolled through the store. She fashionably held her mom’s handmade grocery bag on her arm like it was a stylish purse. Anyone looking at her would have agreed that she was the best-looking woman in that grocery store. She strutted through the aisles, looking for all the things on her list.

As she made her way to the produce aisle, she looked around for the specific fruits her mamá had asked her for. Cherimoya, passion fruit, mango… the final one she needed to find was watermelon. She walked over to the area with the melons, not really paying attention to anyone around her until she collided with another young woman walking towards the mangoes.

“Oh! I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, miss!” The curly haired woman began to apologize profusely as she helped Isabela pick up her groceries. She wore a pretty simple t-shirt and short jeans that didn’t hide much of the shape of her body.

Isabela blushed a bit as she grasped for the fruits on the ground. “It’s okay, I wasn’t looking where I was going.”

The girl smirked. “Too busy thinking about looking hot?”

Isabela gave her a bit of a glare. “It was an honest mistake. But thanks for noticing-“ She flipped her hair a bit, brushed some dust off her clothes and held out a hand. “I’m Isabela Madrigal.” 

The girl hesitantly shook it. “I’m Moana. Moana Waialiki. Are you… related to a Dolores Madrgial?”

Isabela’s brain was on fire. She couldn’t believe she was casually meeting her musical rival, the young woman she’d been striving to outshine. And she was really pretty…

“Yeah, Dolores is my cousin.” She smiled, trying and probably failing to avoid looking uncomfortable.

Moana put a hand on her hip. “Your cousin is cool, but she’s not as good-looking as you…” The way she looked at Isabela made her feel even more nervous. She was used to being looked at by people, and she was no stranger to being complimented for her looks. But this girl was different. She was so shameless with her attitude, not even caring that they had just met. And even though Isabela had been building up Moana as a competitor, she kinda liked it…

“You’re going to be in the Battle of the Bands, right?” Isabela asked, still trying not to stutter.

“Yep! See you there~” The woman leaned on a shelf, and sort of awkwardly fell. Isabela giggled quietly as she walked towards the dairy section. She’d get the watermelon later.

The man in the mirror was not the infamous el Brujo Loco, but he did wear the same dark blue jacket, claimed from the long-dead Señora Figueroa’s worldly effects and last worn by her longer-dead esposo. The stiff, boxy shoulders jutted out past Bruno’s actual shoulders, and he couldn’t decide if he liked the effect or not. Last night, when Bruno planned this, the old jacket hanging in the back of his closet had seemed like a nice surprise. It wasn’t the sort of thing that men wore on dates to the cantina, or to have friendly drinks with other men, but he and José weren’t meeting at the cantina. And José had said he found it... intriguing, when they were younger. Attractive, even. Somehow.

My entry for @madrigaydays this year for the prompt of the second week: Open!

The initial sketch with some ramblings under the cut

Uhmm idk if it's too subtle or not, but I had this idea that even if the dinner went okay and Isabela accepted the proposal, something would tip her off and she'd eventually sabotage the wedding plans, coming out in the process: probably her ex she broke up with to uphold the perfect image would've showed up at the engagement party (and rekindled some suppressed feelings), or she'd probably just freak herself out at the thought of kissing Mariano at the isle, idk yet but I liked the image in my mind, it looked fun, but now I second guess the choice of the pigments on her dress, because on the one hand she's still surrounded by the colors Alma wants her to wear and be associated with and that seems stupid to just ditch the more bold colors of the original movie, but on the other hand I wanted the image to be a bit more obvious that Isa's now open as a queer woman (thus the lesbian flag colors around her and on the dress)-

Ugh the original is already so good on the symbolism it feels wrong changing something, but here we are, look it's Bubo I thought at first he'd look at Isa standing up at Alma and realize he should do the same and come out as trans but I thought showing Mariano that's like hurt and confused by her gesture would be more interesting I really don't know, I haven't been able to do a finished drawing for a long time and I really wanted to contribute to the event so I thought I better post at least this, I'll never make it perfect but I like it enough and uh... I'm tired
