I guess it's fair to call it an interpretation, sure.

I genuinely thought it was because he's illegitimate, thus lower rank, and had to be added to the family registry last of everyone. That interpretation seemed important to the narrative.

Age is directly correlated with the amount of respect owed– so, yes, I fully assumed an interpretation of implicit politicking on Guangshan's part. It might not even be lying. I feel like I've seen other illegitimate sons in novels called xiao solely because of their lesser position in the household. It can be derogatory to call others by an inferior age– hence, use of "lao zi" for a grandiose personal pronoun in slang use. "I, your patriarch" implicitly means "I, your superior". That common implication is a big part of how Chinese language and literary conventions work. It's all very heavy on saying things while leaving them unsaid. Euphemistic. The cultural expectation that might be common with native readers doesn't translate directly. I am not by any stretch of imagination a scholar of Mandarin, but I do study translation and cultural context footnotes from all my years of reading c-novels. These conclusions are formed in response to those experiences.

So, it seemed very intentional that Guangshan felt he /had/ to name Guangyao for his own generation– after all, Mo Xuanyu didn't get a new Jin name when he was let in. Because he was too young to threaten the heir position. His role as another, even lesser, Jin son is important here because of the contrast it provides to the ultimate antagonist. Although Xuanyu was much younger, he wasn't the one called little uncle. Because it wasn't as important to reinforce an inferior position when he was not a threat.

Think about it like an imperial drama, since Guangshan directly saw himself like an emperor in Ruohan's wake and the restrictions of class heirarchy are a major theme in MDZS. Protecting the legitimate heir's position is the goal of any emperor who appointed one. Ensuring Meng Yao is honored solely in an advisory capacity is ensuring he doesn't start a rebellion claiming a deserved place as heir. Whether or not he would have done that, Guangshan /felt/ threatened by him. All of the microaggressions used to keep Meng Yao in line are why his views finally changed from desperation for his father's acceptance to unfilial-ly commiting patricide. He got absolutely slammed down in every concievable way, ultimately feeling like being accepted into the family never lifted him from the inferior position he was born into.

Meng Yao is older than Zixuan, that's why he's *part of the older brothers generation* and his father had to *remove him from the current generational line of succession at his crowning/naming*...

like yes the actor was young and cute but that was intentional to mislead viewers and you really shouldn't be stupid and take it at face value because by missing the nuances of the narrative you're missing what makes it so thoughtful and good compared to its successor

I just saw a fic claim that he was younger than Wuxian and that's Demonstrably Patently False! If he was younger, younger than Jiang Wanyin, Younger than Wen Qionglin, possibly closer to Mo Xuanyu's age, then his father would never have repressed his capabilities like that. Because he would not have threatened the heir position of the legitimate heir.

Im gonna make a namings post too one of these days istg bc ppl in China still have childhood nicknames like Ying (onomatopoeia for baby crying) it's just not their govt names (please do not legally name your son crying-baby-noise)

Another excellent question! A short answer to the first question is "the same reason he says 'Pal' all the time!"

"Shounin. Namae to shokugyou wa?"

(English Localization: "Witness, your name and occupation?")

"Ha--! Namae wa Itonokogiri Keisuke. Shokatsusho no keiji-ssu."

"Yes[, sir]!* My name is Itonokogiri Keisuke. [I'm a] local precinct detective."

(EL: "Yes, sir! My name is Dick Gumshoe. I'm a detective at the local precinct.")

Gumshoe speaks with slang Japanese. As an example, he often says "ッス", "ssu", which is a slurred "です", "desu", the polite way to say "be, is". It's like if you're trying to be polite but you just aren't.

English doesn't really have polite language in the way Japanese does, so the localization team decided to have Gumshoe say "Pal" to thread the needle of showing that he's a little rough around the edges, but still tries to be polite. It's a good choice!

However, calling Franziska (or Edgeworth, for that matter) "Pal" in this situation doesn't exactly work to show this semi-polite speech. Polite speech is expected in the Japanese workplace when you speak with superiors, so the localizers opted with "Sir" instead when he's speaking to Edgeworth--or Franziska.

*Here comes the asterisk! Gumshoe says "はッ", "Ha--", a shortened way to say "はい", "hai", which is a polite "yes". It's often translated as "Yes, sir" if it has the nuance of an English "Yes, sir".

"Witness. Name and occupation?" (yep, exactly the same as Franziska above)

So, in Japanese Gumshoe doesn't really call Franziska anything. He's merely speaking in a way that shows he's speaking to his boss.

Now, why does Gumshoe call Franziska "Sir" in the English localization? I originally was going to say, "I don't know," but after some googling, it seems like it's a Hollywood trope to address high ranking women in the police or military as "sir" (although, a few folks on various forums who were in those fields insist it's not true to reality). Gumshoe's way of speaking in Japanese is from hierarchical communities, such as the military (the first person pronoun, "自分", "jibun", which Gumshoe uses, is the first-person pronoun used by folks in those communities), so it could also be a nod to that. I'm not sure if that's what the localization team was going for, so I don't want to speak for them!
