he was not even surprised at mae’s reaction anymore. she did have a thing for rolling her eyes any time he told her something she didn’t really want to hear, and matthew found that somewhat amusing. “you should start by respecting me. calling me old man? that’s not nice now, is it?” he asked her, doing his best to keep a straight face. “alright, no grandmas will be hurt by you. but the question is, would you hurt a grandpa?”

“my god, you’re such an old man teacher.” mae sighed with a groan, repeating the old man phrase just to be annoying. “did i ever tell you, you remind me of this guy who taught me in fifth grade? he was our math teacher and he was so old and annoying... you talk like him.” she grinned. it wasn’t really true. that teacher was so boring, and at least matthew was someone who could take a joke and was fun to talk to. “hm...” mae pretended to think. “most likely. if they’re the type to complain a lot.”

isabella may had, had-a bit too much to drink the night before, and walking home from her stay at the persons house she stayed at last night, she was stumbling home–her drunken tinge of delight and merriment still surrounding her. spotting a dog on the corner, a stray–it seemed. She picked it up softly, stroking it’s hair. “Im gonna’ call you tramp.” She pouted, giggling softly. Looking up, like she had been spotted she raised an eyebrow “Oh lemme’ keep him pleaaaaase.”

“oh, no, put him down! he hates that!” mae spoke up quickly as soon as she saw the woman pick up her dog. haruki, being a shiba inu, he was very independent and active, sometimes stubborn. and he obviously looked like he didn’t like being held by a stranger. in fact, he was squirming to jump down. “uh, no? and his name is haruki, not tramp... are you drunk or...?”

Given that grievances like these were water off a duck’s back for Finley, Mae’s bitterness had him snorting into his cup of tea. “Oh, Mae…” He clicked his tongue at her as his lips curled up with a smirk. “Whatever happened to respecting your elders, eh?” He teased with an embellished intonation. To annoy her further, he picked up a fork and stuck it into her slice of cake to carve himself a morsel. “Tell you what though, if you promise to make me toilet wine, I’ll come visit you in prison.” Eyebrows wiggled at her as he popped the piece of cake into his mouth.

mae immediately rolled her eyes, and shook her head. “you won’t be catching me respecting any elders if they won’t respect minimum-wage workers.” she answered. mae looked down at her slice of cake, seeing finley’s fork going in and pulled the plate away from him a little too late. “funny. maybe if you become my accomplice, you can have all the toilet wine you need in prison.” she joked.

There were often times where James couldn’t help but wonder how he got dragged into a conversation with someone he didn’t know and this was for sure one of those. “Er-” He muttered, quirking an eyebrow as he listened to her, well, from what it seemed like, rant. “Seems like you have, uh, a lot of feelings about the matter?” James offered, making a slight face that was followed by a shrug of his shoulders, truly baffled by the entire exchange. 

it’s a habit by now for mae to feel comfortable enough to make conversation or rant to random customers sitting at the bar table of the diner. they usually talked to her first, but she got used to just coming up to anyone who seemed like a regular who knew her and talked to them. apparently she was wrong in whoever she picked this time. “uh... yeah. we get a lot of old people here who complain about coffee and say diner coffee back in their day is way better. i don’t know what they expect from diner coffee.” she answered with a shrug. “sorry for coming at you like that, bro. you seem startled.”
