Mafalda’s grandmother, Isobel Hopkirk (née Wallace) is absolutely the most formidable woman Mafalda has ever met. Often described as a “grumpy old cow” (out of earshot, of course), Isobel has no time for niceties if they’re not required, and she believes they often aren’t. Mafalda has a plethora of stories about her, and she’s more than happy to share. There’s the one time she made a shop girl cry, when she called Mafalda a tart because her lipstick was too red, or the setting-tablecloth-on-fire-incident.
Mafalda absolutely adores her. Isobel is her hero, and Mafalda hopes she can only be half as stubborn as an old woman. She also holds a great deal of respect and admiration for her grandmother, and she is the person whose opinion Mafalda values the most. This can most easily be noticed when Mafalda goes to visit her grandparents. She takes out all of her extra piercings, tones down the make-up, and wears longer clothes, or at least, clothes long enough to cover her tattoos.

I don’t think so? I certainly can’t imagine when that would have come into my family line, but it would be totally cool if I did.

hey-juliette:
Juliette didn’t mind the rambling, and could easily tell that while the name might have been Italian, she herself was surely not. “Have you ever looked up what it means? Perhaps that could give you some insight,” she offered. Juliette wasn’t exactly her birth given name, it had been one she chose for herself upon realizing that she was indeed a woman. But, that wasn’t always the easiest first conversation to have. “Go on and guess, if you’d like, I won’t mind,” she laughed. “Thank you, I quite like it better as well.” It really didn’t matter wich she went by, though since Juliette was something she chose, it would always be favorable.
“That’s quite alright with me, I can handle it,” she replied back with a smirk, tipping her head to the side and folding her hands together loosely. Juliette may not have looked it, but she was one to hold her alcohol. She knew her limits, and her likes and dislikes. Truth be told, she wasn’t all that picky. “You’re by yourself this evening?” she asked, wondering if it was true and if so, why, since the woman before her was rather cute. Then again, maybe she was open to meeting someone, or a few someones.
“I did, once. As a kid. Means strength, or battle, or something like that. Total bull, if you ask me.” Mafalda shrugged. “French? Goes along with the accent, I’m assuming, but I could be wrong.” Mafalda allowed. “Not really a big traveler. Don’t have the time or the funds, unfortunately.”
She chucked. “You know how to hold your liquor, I like that.” Mafalda liked it when she could go toe-to-toe with people when it came to drinking. Made her feel a little less guilty about her own level of consumption. “And most other evenings, unless someone interesting decides to join me. Like tonight.”

“Sorry, water what?” Scrying? That was a word Mafalda had never heard before, and she worked in a bookstore, only occasionally pulling volumes down off the shelves for a quick read. The rest of the other woman’s statement, however, caught her attention. “I have. But that was this morning, I spilled coffee on my jacket, so I had to go home and change. Are you telling me I’m going to fall over again?”
Tumblr media
“Oh! I saw you last night! When I was water scrying!!” Sofiya squealed, instead of greeting the other person. She rarely saw something so specific , and when she did, the action happened a long time after the vision, so this was quite a surprise. Divination rarely worked for her the way she expected it to. Then again, she hadn’t really put an effort on water scrying before. “Same clothes and everything.  But how are you? Have you tripped down the stairs yet?”

“Italian, hm? Duly noted,” Juliette laughed, tucking her hair behind her ears. It was refreshing and pleasantly surprising that the woman seemed to indeed be flirting back. Oh, this could get interesting, she thought to herself. “Juliette,” the blonde answered, her accent fully slurring the letter sounds together for added charm. “People also call me Jules, but you can choose either, so long as you call,” she added with a smirk.
Normally Juliette didn’t tend to take advantage of people buying her drinks. Sure, she accepted one or two here or there, but never from a stranger where she didn’t see the drink poured first. Besides, she could be rather finicky about her drinks at times, so all around it had tended to be better for her to get her own. However, she had to admit that she was intrigued this time by the offer, smiling flirtatiously at the other. “I’d love one. What have you been indulging in this evening? I’ll take that.”
“I mean, I’m not, clearly. About as Scottish as they come, me, so who knows where my parents got it from. A book, maybe.” Mafalda shrugged absentmindedly, before realising she was beginning to to ramble on. “Ah, three guesses as to where that’s from.” She joked. “Suits you, though. I think I’ll stick with Juliette, much prettier, in my opinion.”
She grinned. it had been far too long since Mafalda had just gone out and had a friendly flirt. Often, her nights out had an ulterior motive, especially when it cane to talking to others, but tonight? It was different. “A whisky sour.” Mafalda answered. “But whisky isn’t the most, uh, palatable drink? So you’re welcome to something else, as long as it’s too pricey.”
