Made these mini mixed media portraits of my family member's pets for Christmas to go with these funky frames I found in a drawer. Had fun getting experimental layering water color, @kingartcompany tempura sticks, colored pencil, oil pastel and @posca_usa paint pens in various orders and combinations. Here's the current state of my living room/studio after spending the last 12 days making ~30 paintings through @ny_studioschool painting marathon with Graham Nickson. There is paint absolutely _everywhere_, and my brain feels like congealed linseed oil but it feels so good, and I'm quite sad to have to go back to doing anything other than painting 10+ hours a day, for now. Thanks for all the birthday wishes, friends - this was a wonderful way to spend it. — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/mDvr2Qy

I did a cocktail hour pastel painting of the view at the most beautiful wedding in Kona, Hawaii last weekend. What an honor to celebrate the love of two gorgeous, brilliant, creative souls, @ruth_solorzano_ and @hugofowlermusic - thanks for letting me be a small part of it! 💖🌊🌺 (And thanks @garrisonharward for the stolen #rugo shot, taken while I was 🎨) — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/z76CKwS

The last two weeks of the figure painting marathon at @ny_studioschool with @elisa__jensen were a dream! These are all still kind of works in progress - the first two are 3 x 4 feet! Bigger then I've ever really painted. I'll post progress soon. . #artistsofinstagram #art #oilpainting #figurepainting #artoftheday #portrait #paint #paintings #painter https://www.instagram.com/p/CC2YiVpD3mH/?utm_medium=tumblr

Learning about color today by doing limited palette paintings with no white allowed. Such a challenge but really great practice. #nystudioschool figure painting marathon with @elisa__jensen https://www.instagram.com/p/CCcBK2UDbf6/?utm_medium=tumblr

Still thinking about Breonna Taylor. This summer I have been trying to learn to digitally paint with Procreate on iPad - I figure I might as well practice by doing her portrait. It's important that we don't forget. Justice for Breonna! ↔️ @forbreonna (at Black Lives Matter) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDcdd1ADOWu/?utm_medium=tumblr

Wooow, I just got a notification that I painted this 10 YEARS ago today. This painting is special to me for two reasons: 1. I learned so much making it. I'd never painted anything nearly so big before or since (It's the wood was from the bottom of a discarded twin size bed I found on the street) and I just decided to experiment- I painted it very quickly without thinking too hard about anything. I loved the feeling, and the result, but then immediately forgot it all the things I learned and went back to working small and overthinking everything for a long time. Now, 10 years later I'm *just* starting to work big and instinctively again. 2. Through hanging this peice in the original @littleskips Bushwick, I ended up connecting with a few serious kindred spirits who are still immeasurably important to me a full decade later - people whose love and support help keep me sane in times like these, so thank God I did! It's a good reminder that the process of making art and sharing art can teach and give you things that go way beyond the work itself. So let's make stuff and share it. Anyway TL;DR Art is cool. . #art #portrait #painting #foundmaterials #acrylic #artistsofinstagram #old #2010 https://www.instagram.com/p/CA00XfnDkoL/?utm_medium=tumblr

Yesterday I unearthed photos of these two paintings I did of my dear grandmother between 2010-2013 (in the second one she's wearing google glasses, ha) I never really shared these because I felt so unhappy with them when I made them. I looked at them, probably too closely for too long, and only saw the flaws. I really wanted to paint more realistically at the time and was frustrated that my paintings always came out looking like... mine. Too chunky and cartoony and wonky etc etc. I never finished these or thought they were worth finishing. When I came across these yesterday, I couldn't believe I ever felt that way. Sure, they are imperfect but they also aren't the complete failures I remember them being. I used to waste a lot of time comparing myself to other artists and being hyper critical of every little thing I made. Lately I have been working on being more patient and open minded about what my art should look like, and remembering that painting is meant to be expressive and fun. The only thing I would change about these now is how harsh I was towards myself and that I ever let that slow me down.
