      You would never know Natsume was scared unless you had a keen eye. Natsume’s fear usually manifested as something else: His head would usually pulse, his voice would raise and run his throat hoarse, a flame of rage would burst from his heart and through his veins. But after the fire burns out, he can vaguely feel cold steel grip his heart and his limbs, and it wasn’t a pleasant feeling in the least.

      Thankfully, Shu-niisan was warm, and it wasn’t too odd for Natsume to show affection.

      Natsume would sit wordlessly next to his senior as he worked, carefully slipping his arms around the other’s waist, holding him from the side. If the other showed no objection, he would hug him tighter, nuzzling his senior’s arm wordlessly. His heart  would still be pulsing and his mind would still be racing, but he would feel much better, more…secure.

      If Shu would address him, he’d simply say: “But of courSE, I told you, didn’t I? Cats always know the best places to sit, Shu-niiSAN.”

      There are things that spells would never work on, but he didn’t want anyone else to know that.

      Telling fortune after fortune expends spiritual energy, and Natsume felt like he can barely do any more for the moment, so he left his little makeshift booth to take a break.

      After looking idly around at scented candles and soaps, flower themed decor, and all sorts of things you'd imagine there was in a flower festival, he found an interesting little booth. It sold all sorts of antiques and trinkets that were a little, ah, what was the term? Sora called it 'steam punk,' Natsume recalled.

      There even was a set of miniature clothing, complete with a headpiece that Natsume could tell was superb craftsmanship, as amateur as he was. For a doll, perhaps? Mademoiselle immediately came to mind, and of course, Shu-niisan. This kind of thing really seemed to fit his tastes, Natsume thought.

      Natsume sighed aggravatedly. He's told his 'senpai' a thousand times already, he didn't want flowers. They'll only die from the fumes of his experiments; what was the point? And yet each time they wilted, 'senpai’ would replenish them with flowers anew.

      Why?

      It was pointless and annoyed Natsume to no end, he almost wants to throw the flowers away outright. 

       And it would always be the same ones too. Daisies and another flower he didn’t know the name to. What was it? Why did he always pick the same ones?

    Why?

      Whatever. Not that he cared.

      He picked up the vase of the new ones, placing them by the window. Maybe they'll live longer there.

      The young magician’s eyes were practically sparkling with childlike glee at his senior’s words. To be complimented by an artisan of Shu-niisan’s level was no ordinary feat–to Natsume, it was a high honor! It felt like he truly deserved to be on the level of his seniors, after all–

      “It pleases me to hear that it is to your lIKING,” Natsume, of course, had to act deserving of such praise. But cool though his words and demeanor seemed, his eyes continued to betray his childlike delight and excitement. He did plan this carefully, after all, taking inspiration from each one of the Eccentrics’ defining qualities, weaving them with what capacity he could (and with a lot of help) into a melody and song. He’s not certain if the older man noticed, however.

      “Now that I listen to this agAIN, though, I am aware that it still needs wORK. I also had a choreography in mIND, but…”

     ….Wouldn’t it be nice if we could perform together, with Rei-niisan, Kanata-niisan, and Wataru-niisan? What do you think?

      For some reason, he wasn’t able to ask that aloud. This song was for a “pipe dream,” as someone had called it–where the Five Eccentrics could achieve happiness together. But now that everything has been said and done, and the song has lost its purpose, maybe it’s never meant to be heard on stage.

      Hearing his words felt like being thrown into the freezing current of a river in winter. A crisp, cold sensation gripped Natsume’s limbs, gripped his /heart/, and for a moment he lost his voice and was unable to speak.

      It was a truth that he knew very well: the other Eccentrics have saved him, shielded him from the brunt of destruction that Eichi Tenshouin wrought. He was nothing like them at all, he had none of their talent or experience, and was only a mere afterthought.

      But time has passed since then, and he was a much different person than he was before. Natsume may have only been an afterthought to the Emperor’s scheme, but he will be the afterthought he will forever regret.

       Clenching his fists, Natsume looks up at his senior this time, expression opposite his tenseness: with a smile sweet with venom and eyes piercing-- 

      “If you want to tear me dOWN as you have always plANNED, you are more than welcome to tRY.”

        He turned to the side slightly, before snapping his head back to spit at the Emperor.
