Process on the spread I'm working on this week. For a picture book to be published by @rocketbirdbooks 📚 It's mostly watercolor, with bits of gouache and inks and colour pencils. You can find me and my scribbles in the pages of 'Sketching from the Imagination: Character concepts' along with lots and lots of inspiring artists. The book just got published by 3dtotal and can be found here: https://ift.tt/HOXfinZ I was thinking mostly about sketchbooks and my dynamics with them, when I answered the questions some months ago. The sketches published there are mostly from last year, when I had a little break between client projects. I've found no space for sketchbooks or regenerative personal practice lately, and that raises interesting, sometime uncomfortable but very necessary questions. Instead of beating myself up with preformed ideas of what a 'real' artist should or shouldn't be doing, I'm trying to accept what is, as part of my own process, as well as explore the questions and the discomfort and see what comes up. If I find illuminated answers I promise I'll tell you first ;) In the meantime I'll be reading what the other artists in the book have to say and see what resonates with me. I wonder what makes unfinished paintings so much more appealing and exciting than the final art sometimes... It could have something to do with the mix of solid colour contrasting with the linework. I love that feather-light raven just there. That little girl is turning 37 years old today... I've been thinking a lot about her lately, as I started a talking therapy a few months ago. Who she was and what she dreamed about, how she saw the world and what she wanted to do with her one precious life. I ask myself those same questions. I'm grateful to be able to ask myself those questions, and to have a chance to explore the answers. I was feeling stuck in some aspects of my life (mostly family, personal things) and am glad I finally went to look for help and answers, instead of continuing on a road that felt increasingly difficult to navigate. As I've touched on before, I'm also slowly emerging from a burn out from 2020-2021 that still affects my work today. I feel a bit ashamed about how long it's taking me to get better, but whatever time it takes will be just the right time. I'm working on it. Anyway, a bit of a rambling personal thing for today... If you're on a recovery-discovery journey of your own, I would highly recommend the podcast 'We can do hard things' by @glennondoyle . Not art related, but if Art continues to be made by humans rather than machines, as I hope it will, then it's good for you just the same. I'm also continuing to learn more about the links between creativity and mental health. I've done a talk on it previously at @lightboxexpo , and I'm planning to do more around that, in the form of a webinar and maybe a little book too. We'll see!
