“No. Though I wish we did.” Gilgamesh would be here if that were the case. “We’ve learned that our memories are taken from us after each emergence. And we know the Celestials store those memories, but we don’t know where. Resurrection sounds far better, if you ask me.”

“I did not ask for the title.” Thena raised her brows just slightly, curious as to why the woman reacted as such. “I’m not a god, not really. I am an Eternal, and we may live for thousands of years but our bodies and minds are nothing but tools to the Celestials. Hm. I think I’ve had quite enough of gods as well.”

“My name’s Steven–– Grant. Steven Grant.” Steven fumbled over his words with a nervous lilt to his tone as he held his hand out with a grin to shake. “Makes sense, doesnit? I mean, you’ve been around for centuries. Longer than that! I don’t believe I’ve heard of a Sprite, though. You’ll have to introduce me to her sometime.”

“Steven Grant. I will do my best to remember that.” She smiled and shook his hand. “I think Sprite would love to talk to you. Someday, perhaps. When she is not in school. It seems to keep her quite busy.” Thena paused, mind wandering for a moment. She wanted to remember everything. The death, the destruction, the planets that have been lost, and the time spent with her fellow Eternals. But she was also afraid of her mind fracturing completely. It was a frustrating line to walk. “We’ve been here for thousands of years, actually. We’ve possibly existed for millions. But we only remember the time we’ve spent here, on Earth. Well, except for me. But that’s complicated.”

Thena glanced down to the large spear she had just summoned. Like all her weapons, it was intricate and gold and had a slight glow to it. And, also like all her other weapons, it appeared quite suddenly. She had been lost in thought, a memory more specifically, and had not meant to conjure it. “I’m sorry. I did not mean to startle you.” She sounded almost sheepish when she apologized, and hid her hands behind her back after the weapon disappeared.

“You shouldn’t jump scare someone with explosive powers.”

Thena peered suspiciously into the bowl. She missed Gilgamesh’s cooking, but was trying to expand her palate. “What is it?”

“Of course there’s enough for you. Here,” she extended the bowl. “Take some. Sugar is good for you.”

“Really? I could have sworn that looked familiar to me. Are you sure that’s not another one of your creations, Sersi?”

“Forgive me – I don’t think I’ve seen anything quite like that before.” And Sersi had seen a lot over the last 7,000 years.

Hello Makkari. Thena signed her greeting slowly, eyes squinted in concentration. “Was that right? I fear I’m a bit out of practice still.”

Do you sign? There was a pen nearby if they didn’t.

“Wow! So your name is actually just Thena, not Athena? I don’t mean to step on your toes, but Athena is actually known for so much more than that. She’s technically the Goddess of Wisdom and War, although people tend to pick one to focus one rather than acknowledge all of the other wonderful stuff she’s made a name for herself in with her patronage.” After the small ramble, Steven caught his breath and awkwardly stared at the woman for a few beats before blushing a bit. “Look at me, trying to explain your own lore to you. I’m terribly sorry.. for that. It is beyond a pleasure to meet you, though.”

“Hm. I like you. What’s your name?” There was a hint of a smile on her lips when she answered. “My own lore doesn’t come easy to me. And even if I could remember, I’m sure Sprite made it all seem much more grand than it really was. She is quite the storyteller.”

“Paps.” Thena repeated the word, trying to solidify it in her mind. It held no meaning to her— if she had heard it before, she had forgotten it. “Who are they? Why do you run from them?”

“It’s called a disguise.” Carol smiles, pulling her hood further up over her head. “Keeps the paps off my ass.”

no matter the front thena puts up— she loves deeply. the other members of the eternals are her family, and she would do anything for them. before her mind started to fracture from mahd wy’ry, she thought of herself as the protector of the team.

thena’s core memories aren’t the only thing affected by mahd wy’ry. like the scene in eternals where they stuck their hand in a toaster— they get confused sometimes. forgetting how to do things, forgetting what things are, forgetting things like the names of colors and textures. it usually doesn’t last long, but it’s embarassing. they don’t let it show when they’re feeling vulnerable, though.

her relapses in memories don’t happen as often, but they do happen. now her relapses also include wandering back to her time spent with gilgamesh, which provides a silver lining of sorts— most of her relapses are non-violent now. she still needs to help and support of the eternals, but they don’t have to constantly worry about being attacked anymore.
