Y'all aren't going to believe this but
I finished my floofy shirt!
...it only took 2 years but that's Fine.

Somehow I made the collar a bit tight and I can't stand to wear things tight around my neck, so I decided not to put a button on it; if I need the neck closed up, that's what pretty pins are for.
It also looks fantastic under things, and I have visions of it with stays/corsets... alas, I have no stays/corsets yet but there are plans.

The shoulders/armscyes feel kinda odd and I haven't decided yet whether I did something wrong or if it's just a different shape of armhole than I'm used to and just haven't worn it enough to get accustomed.
Thank you @badassindistress for all the directions!

Smol flock of knitted bats for an October birthday, quarter for scale
Free pattern from https://mariannaslazydaisydays.blogspot.com/2022/09/bats.html - I definitely recommend it: super quick and easy (each of these took me 20-30 minutes while watching TV), the shaping doesn't require anything crazy, and they're so cute! My one tiny dissatisfaction is I couldn't get the ears quite symmetrical...

Floofy shirt step 4

Two sleeves, all done. I think there's even a right cuff and a left cuff.

Here's what I seem to be ending up with for a pattern, for what it's worth; I don't really expect anyone else to be able to use it as-is because legs and feet are weird and unique. I also expect to need to tweak the sole piece a bit more. The photos are random orientations because tumblr is also weird and unique and I can't be bothered to try to fix that at the moment.

I think these are getting put on hold for a bit now while I try to wrap up a couple of other things and determine whether I actually have flannel I want to risk on this.
Today's harebrained sewing idea, brought to you by my toes and ankles feeling cold: medieval style hose, but make it flannel.
So I've drafted most of a pattern according to Nicole Rudolph's instructions (note to self, add link when on desktop). It still needs all the curves added, but I'm hoping that's going to make more sense in fabric.

I've also cut out a first mockup from a random bit of muslin- kindly ignore the truly horrifying piecing that's trying to compensate for doing something stupid.

Take 2: better, but there's still something screwy about the gussets.

Well
Um
That was interesting

I think everything was in the right general neighborhood, except the sole piece was weirdly too short and the ankle gusset needs to move forward at least an inch. It's very possible fixing the gusset will also fix the length...

I impulse sewed a pocket the other night because for some reason I Could Not Stand the thought of wearing a skirt I've worn loads of times before and being pocketless all day.

YA'LL
I love it so much! I'm mad that I didn't make one years ago! (See, I want to make a pretty one but can't decide what that means so it hasn't happened at all.) It only took like an hour! It was so easy!
It's about 8"x11.5" - to make a pattern I just took a piece of letter sized paper, folded it in half, freehanded a curve with scissors, and to my astonishment, liked the shape after the very first try. Black cotton canvas (designated for another project, I may regret that...), bias tape binding, and ribbon, all from stash.
I still intend to make a prettier one someday, but meanwhile, this is my new favorite thing.

This is a reminder for those who handmake Christmas presents that now is not too early to start. It may in fact be a good time to start if you have a lot to make/your craft takes a long time. You should maybe start it now, whether that's brainstorming or actually doing the crafts!

Floofy shirt sewalong step 3
It took a lot longer than I expected or intended, but at this point that should surprise exactly no one (including me).

It took 3 tries to get the collar on the right way. The first time, I learned that the gusset/reinforcement areas have too many layers and are too bulky to gather gracefully. The second time, I left those areas ungathered and hoped not to regret that decision in future, sewed about 1/3 of the way around, and realized that I was attaching the collar inside out. I did Not want to redo the gathers again, so after the first edge of the collar was attached, I just unpicked the short ends, reironed the collar the other way out (hurray for fabric without right and wrong sides), sewed the ends back up the correct way, and stitched the inside of the collar to the shirt.
I’m actually really happy with how the gathers turned out.
Please hold while I figure out where the sleeve pieces got to...

Floofy shirt sewalong step 2
Another step closer to the floofy shirt à la @badassindistress

I can’t find the post now to give proper credit, but emphatic special thanks to whoever suggested folding the thing in half to attach it! because I’m not sure how else I would have gotten everything to actually lie flat.

I’m not sure what happened with the edge there - I pinned the thing in place and flipped it over to make sure it looked about right, and it was definitely wasn’t going to reach to the seam allowance. So I measured and measured and carefully cut the slit enough wider to line up the edges...and now it sticks out past the edge of the body. Oh well. Worst case scenario is the shoulders sit about 1cm higher than they were supposed to and I think I’ll be able to live with that.
It wasn’t entirely clear whether I was supposed to sew down the, um, arms of the Y the reinforcement piece makes, but that’s what it looked like was happening in everyone’s pictures so that’s what I did.
