Makorra shippers really missed out on a golden opportunity over the past decade

Makorra shippers really missed out on a golden opportunity over the past decade. It is honestly frustrating because we had the chance to ride the wave and solidify the ship while it still had momentum. Instead, many of us left, and the ship never reached its full potential. The “we popping the biggest bottles when Makorra happens tomorrow” post by avatarskorra became iconic, a cultural touchstone of fandom history. Its continued use and adaptation in other fandoms prove just how deeply it resonated. That kind of legacy matters more than being endgame. Makorra’s lasting influence in memes, discussions, and cross fandom comparisons shows it left a deeper impression than many ships.

I know the harassment we faced was tough, and it took a toll on the fanbase. It is understandable why many Makorra shippers chose to step away or even switch to the endgame ship. Still, I can’t help but wonder if we could have stayed strong and fought back harder, using the negativity as fuel to keep the ship alive. The mockery could have been turned into a rallying point, a way to reclaim the narrative and ensure Makorra remained a presence in popularity.

If Makorra fans had stayed united after Korra ended, we could have transformed the mockery into fuel for visibility and relevance. Endgame status is not everything. Look at Klance, a crackship that remains more popular than Allurance, the canon pairing in Voltron: Legendary Defender. Klance stayed relevant because its fanbase never gave up. Similarly, Zutara, a fanon ship, continues to overshadow Kataang in popularity despite the latter being canon. If Makorra fans had stuck together, we could have turned the ship into a similar force, proving that relevance and legacy matter more than the show’s outcomes.

The “popping bottles” post gave Makorra a unique position to stay in the spotlight, even as a joke. The years of mockery surrounding it actually provided us with an incredible opportunity. Instead of seeing it as a loss, we could have reclaimed that narrative and used it to keep Makorra alive in fandom. I regret not recognizing this at the time and not knowing how to draw either. If I had, I could have contributed to keeping the ship trending, turning negativity into something we owned. No other non endgame ship has had such a clear chance to remain relevant.

I’m not saying we should’ve turned into those insufferable Zutara shippers. I’m not condemning them either. What we could’ve done was take all the mockery thrown at us and flip it into fuel. Instead of letting it break us down, we could’ve used it to keep Makorra trending, the way Zutara shippers have somehow managed to keep their ship alive all these years. If they can keep their non canon ship afloat for over a decade, there’s no reason we couldn’t have done the same. We had the momentum, the iconic moments, and the presence. We just didn’t use it. We had everything we needed to keep Makorra thriving but did not take full advantage of it. With the right energy and effort, we could have turned the mockery and the memes into a badge of pride against hate lol.

Most people have moved on by now, hence their 10 year anniversary was a flop. 🤭 They didn’t trend, didn’t do anything significant, just dusted off the same tired ancient post and made it semi viral again. So really, it’s a win-win for us. We still got a mention!

Can I ask out of genuine curiosity?

I understand Makorra gets a lot of disproportionate backlash but, I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around some things.

For a guy who says he's not impressed by Korra's status, he immediately treated Asami with more grace simply because he found her attractive despite her almost running him over. After six months of dating Korra, he almost hooks up with Asami proving he was still considered an attractive option all this time. He has no problem holding Korra accountable, yet he coddles Asami. This reflects the double standard between conventionally feminine women and those who aren't.

I doubt any woman would trust him, so why would Korra reconcile with him?

As for why he treats Asami better on day 1 than Korra.... I don't really attribute him treating Asami better to anything more than he was instantly attracted to her. Mako's pretty cold, but you wouldn't be mean to someone you would want to date, even if they just ran you over. I guess that's just pretty privilege, honestly. It's def a little screwed up, but if I was run over and a super hot guy came out of the car and asked if I was okay I might not care about being run over too.

As for why he doesn't like Korra day 1... he assumes she's a fan girl, who Mako sees as a nuisance and a distraction from the winning money they desperately need to survive. She's rough around the edges, cocky, and not your typical drop-dead gorgeous girl. Not interested. Mako's a pretty cold person in the beginning. He's only worried about surviving. And pretty girls who give out free concussions on the street.

Your other point.... yeah I got nothing. They should have left Asami's noncon kiss on Mako a mistake and the end of that. Why open that Makorrasami can of worms again. He clearly didn't want to kiss Asami the first time and then he switches up and says he wants to "take his mind off things" and start making out with Asami again as if he wasn't just staring at a photo of Korra and regretting the breakup. I don't really know what the writers were trying to do there.

By coddling vs holding accountable, do you mean for both of the kisses the girls planted on Mako? I think with Korra's kiss he was probably mad at himself and took it out on Korra. His feelings for Korra had reached a breaking point and he ended up hurting his brother. Not to mention cheating on his girlfriend by kissing Korra back. A lot more messy than a weak moment for Asami, having lost basically everything at that point. Besides that kiss, I can't remember Asami doing anything wrong in that relationship tbh loll. Maybe I'm missing what you mean, sorry!!

So why reconcile? In my mind, once Mako falls in love with Korra, she's the only one for him. He continues to be awkward around her in book 3 and stays single for her entire MIA hiatus?! He's down bad. Who wouldn't be. I'm just very into devoted Mako. IMO Mako doesn't risk his life for the sake of saving x amount of people or stopping Kuvira, but simply because Korra needs him. And he basically declares his devotion to her afterward. Maybe Korra dates other people. Maybe Mako stays celibate for the foreseeable future. But I think they won't find what they had in other people and they'll eventually reconnect down the line as more mature versions of themselves ready to take on life together 💙❤️

I’m fine with the breakup coping NO I really am bc I can see why they broke up with the whole raiko situation and Mako lying. But it really set Mako and Korra up to reunite as adults once they grow. Esp with the way Mako acted around Korra in Book 3…. Why show me that if nothing was going to happen? I believe that the reunion was the plan until it was scrapped Book 4

I really don’t buy the immediate arguing between Mako and Korra Book 4. Why is the show trying to convince me nothing has changed between them despite 4 years?? I believe the show was on the KA train at this point and had to derail from the makorra tension they created.

When I write Mako 22+, I imagine him as cautious and quiet and still a little awkward around Korra. Navigating his remaining feelings for her while remaining a loyal friend, but from a distance. He doesn’t engage with her often which hurts her etc etc. (i could be misunderstanding him lol def spent most of my time with him in my delulu fanfictions)

As for Korra, I thought she grew to be more understanding? I forget the finale but doesn’t she defeat Kuvira by talking it out with her? (after the huge fight ofc) Would Book 1 Korra come to the same resolution?

Although I still think they have the same core personality traits, hotheads etc… but maybe they don’t fly off the handle so easily and storm off? Maybe they have a little more patience and understanding? Control their anger better? Why after 4 years would they argue just the same….

I’m curious if others thing Book 4 was OOC for them. Or maybe I’m just delulu as usual. Drop some thoughts 💙❤️

I have way too many headcanons around them so if you want more you can ask me the ones I have around certain themes, but there's some of my favorites I deeply believe in :

I believe in their soulmatism, they'll give each other a second chance years after the current canon compliant

Mako never stopped loving Korra. Like people love to say, she falls first but he fallen harder. (apparently it was implied by Bryke that Mako would never move on from Korra, and it's also how I interpreted their unresolved tension during my very first watch of the show)

If Korra wasn't the avatar.. I feel like these two would be young parents, late teenage parents at worst (I'm not implying anything, but if I did imply something hypothetically it's NAWT Mako's fault that's all I have to say) They're giving the energy imo 🥸

Continuing on Makorra as parents, they're pretty girls makers! I don't make the rules, it's girl dad or nothing for Mako

For the nsfw, they're definitely both switch, and call me boring but I believe in nasty freaky dom Mako. He's just crazy over her worshipping every single part of her body (also beware of calm guys, they have to be insane in one field at least). Do you think Mako kissing Asami back was in character? When Korra came back from a war, this is what she would walk into. Don't you think it was a degrading thing to do Korra?

The fact that he is friends with a person who would act so desperately selfish says a lot about how he doesn't respect Korra.

I'm not sure how Makorra would work as long as he doesn't realize that. No self respecting woman would put up with that.

(I don't buy the "vulnerable Asami" excuse, nor do I think it justifies what happened)

The way this is a reach 🤌 so if I understand correctly, Asami instigated the kiss with Mako and somehow it’s Mako’s fault? It continually amazes me how Mako gets the brunt of the blame for the love triangle when it’s mostly Korra and Asami playing tug of war with him as the rope.

Vulnerable Asami? Try vulnerable Mako. What the fuck. He’s raw from a break up and Asami lunges for the attack??? That situation is at least 70% her fault.

Why is Mako friends with Asami? You mean why is Korra friends with Asami? The two of them giggling like besties in Book 3 like they didn’t thoroughly fuck with Mako’s head and actively disrespect each other’s relationships.

Why does the blame fall squarely on Mako here, when really it’s male writers blatantly not understanding female dynamics. Feminism? Maturity?? If I catch a bitch kissing my boyfriend that bitch better get out of my house. Best believe she will never be trusted again.

The writers wanted a Beautiful Liar moment so bad where two girls bond over being victimized by the same man. EXCEPT in both cases the girls instigated the betrayal (Korra kissed Mako while he’s dating Asami, Asami kissed Mako when the break up is so raw it’s not even pasteurized)

If there is any justice in the world (and Bryke knew how to write romance) Asami and Korra would’ve fought each other like the catty bitches they truly are.

I don’t even care about defending Mako or Makorra I just want to highlight that the Korra-Asami friendship makes ZERO SENSE. They’re so fucking toxic omg. And now they’re dating??? Based on their track record with respecting boundaries: good fucking luck with that.

Then you get Mako sacrificing himself in book 4 and people going “he should’ve died”, why??? Because two girls tossed him around like a frisbee?? Because you’ve got showrunners who can’t write romance???

Korra would be lucky to deserve Mako after all that. That is my core Makorra belief. It’s a fucked up girlfriend/pathetically in love boyfriend who’s too good for her dynamic!
