i'll never say this publicly but honestly i think tigerstar had some valid ideas about having one big clan. obviously he was super wrong with all the violence and force, but one big clan could solve a lot of issues. No more border patrol fighting, more food for everyone during leaf-bare season, no drama involving cross-clan mates, etc etc. a lot of deaths could be avoided if we all took care of one another instead of fighting all the time

That's not what they meant and you KNOW it. They brought up some valid points about preserving lives, and denounced Tigerstar's actions as much too violent. Starclan above, no cat can have an opinion these days...

Honestly I don't know how I feel about this... each Clan is beautifully unique and has their own traditions, which would fade away if Clans were desolved altogether. But OP makes a valid point about less violence and food scarcity. I hate the idea of sending my kits off to become Warriors, only for them to die during a stupid argument about Sunningrocks. A pile of rocks is NEVER worth a cat's life, whether they are in your Clan or not. And we have lost lives like that before.

I agree! Traditions are important, but every medicine cat knows that working together saves lives. Sharing herbs can stop the spread of greencough, and sharing prey stops kits from crying from hunger. We really need a better system, because I can't cry myself to sleep another night, blaming myself for not having enough cobwebs to stop a kit from bleeding out in front of me.

Frostpaw Notes

My favourite pov character!! She's got so much interesting stuff going on and she's trying so hard poor baby.

RiverClan seemed to be running almost ok without a leader, but it's clear someone triggered some of the recent deaths and you can't tell if anyone is planning a takeover and is trying to look good at organising stuff. Poor Frostpaw had her life collapse for a bit and it's nice to see her actually grieving her mother. She's having a lot of self-doubt about her actions in this book while still staying firm that she's doing the best she can.

As soon as I heard the sign that she should look outside of her normal assumptions for a new leader, my mind immediately started shouting Mothstar. She's a little rusty on her warrior skills but she seemed to have a good grip on leader duties like organising patrols and speaking at the gathering. Her non-connection to StarClan would be an issue, but I'm just going to keep a little AU in my heart where she's who eventually gets chosen

I don't know who Frostoaw would pick otherwise, as I'm not used to a lot of the RiverClan cats. I feel like they could pick anyone and it'd feel just as out of place as anyone else. I don't know who Curlfeather was saying not to trust either, but I also suspect that may be Mothwing in the end. No hints to that yet but it'd make sense thematically as she's the person Frostpaw is closest to.

Tigerstar showing up at RiverClan camp and starting a well-intentioned-definitely-not-a-takeover takeover was great for the drama. I already went over it in Sunbeam's post, but I wish they'd built up to it a little more as it just happened. I'm excited to see Frostpaw & Sunbeam interact next book!

Nightheart

Oh boy Nightheart is a pain to read. Least favourite protag and I hope he starts acting like less of a brat soon and actually shows some maturity.

It's getting clearer that he is just an average young warrior, but he keeps trying to go big or go home and falls short often. When he messes up and is told so, he blames everyone else for having unrealistic expectations of him, rather than reflecting and seeing that trying to push himself is actively sabotaging him.

I get that he's supposed to be entirely blind to this and that's a core part of his character, it's just really annoying to have it hammered in at every opportunity punctuated by a tantrum that starts to feel samey after a while.

The only times his plans pay off is around Sunbeam, and because she's also a good listener he's convinced himself that she's the solution to all of his problems. He even went as far as to wander into ShadowClan to ask to be her mate only hours after she told him her mother had ostracized her brother for having an ex-SkyClan mate, which isn't going to end well for her.

I hope his world comes crashing down around his little pointy ears and he learns to be more mature soon. I don't think he's reached the bottom of the hole he's digging himself but I'd like to see him consider building a ladder next book.

Sunbeam notes

Sunbeam was ok in this book, and is in the middle in terms of my favourite protaganist so far. She isn't unlikeable, I just don't find her hugely interesting. She's less interesting as a character this book but the events around her are picking up and I enjoyed reading her chapters.

Her interactions with Berryheart were pretty good and it's great that she's grown enough to come to the conclusion that her mother is being a total ass. I'd forgotten about Berryheart's experience with Darktail and I think it was a good callback as to why she has so much paranoia and hatred toward Frigewhisker. I found it really cathartic for Sunbeam to just totally shut her down and say that it doesn't give her the right to be a bully, and she'll never agree with her

The stuff between her and Nightheart wasn't unexpected, especially since Nightheart still hasn't interacted with Frostpaw and they need to get the romance going gogogogo. It's not been as terrible as BristleRoot and it was nice to see them actually spend time together while on the catmint trip, but as per usual it's all moving a bit quick.

I don't understand why she went to RiverClan with Tigerstar at the end though, and I feel like the book vould have benefited from showing some sort of transition between Tigerstar arguing he didn't want to take over RiverClan to actively threatening them in their camp. I'm choosing to believe he went "I'm going to sort this problem out right now to prove you wrong" and immediately went there after he got called out on a potential invasion, but I would have liked to have seen that.

It's also interesting that he knew about the forgotten catmint when no one would have had the opportunity to tell him that. I don't know if it was a mistake, or if there's a spy in RiverClan.

do not buy onestar’s confession. i know this counts as a spoiler, but i’ll be honest i don’t care this kind of trumps that.

the book canonizes whitetail being onestar’s mate. whitetail is specifically mentioned to be his former apprentice in the same chapter this happens.

the book specifically addresses this and defends it, saying that now that whitetail’s an adult it’s ok.

it skips over her apprenticeship, we never see whitetail as a kit or apprentice. they did not need to include any reference to her being onestar’s former apprentice. they could’ve made them the same age. they didn’t need to make her his mate at all.

but they did. they very explicitly did. they chose to do this despite everything. they should’ve known better.

this is a children’s book. they have a responsibility not to publish this kind of shit.

they’ve been getting worse and worse with this over the years. they keep on making the family tree into hard canon despite the fans saying, for years, that the family tree was gross. they keep on doing this and this is the final straw. it’s gone from being ignorable to being explicitly defended in text.

you do not write this without knowing what you’re doing. this is a conscious choice on their part.

we cannot let this shit keep happening. at a certain point it becomes our responsibility to do something. please do not buy onestar’s confession and please email harper collins or whoever you have to expressing your disappointment and disgust. something needs to change.

I think the warrior cats fandom should be taking about the Harper Colin's worker strike. You know. Since they publish the endless cat books.

The HaperColins Union had almost an unanimous vote (99.5%) to go on strike for better wages and protects.

They will be going on strike Wesnday July 20th.

They have asked us to:

-NOT harass any offical Hapercolins social media

- NOT to boycott Haper books. The point is for HaperColins to feel the strikers absence.

- Donate to their strike fund to cover the wages of those striking. (As of writting this post the fund isn't available)

tbh i think the reason i’ve come to resent the wc fandom’s “fan content is always objectively better and more competent than canon” attitude is because it’s made a lot of people act like the fandom itself is above criticism, that you can just hide behind every accusation with “well that’s my opinion and you have to respect it.” like i’m sorry but this fandom has proved more than capable of churning out the exact same racist, sexist garbage that the erins themselves do. maps where imagery clearly meant to invoke indigenous culture is boiled down to some sort of exotic “aesthetic” you can use to make the atmosphere more “whimsical,” animators being commissioned to animate someone’s fursona killing a female character they don’t like… these things don’t exist in a vacuum are just as deserving of criticism as the racism and misogyny present in the books themselves. and also it makes me get the impression that this in part is due to a lot of people who criticize the books not actually realizing what truly makes these books bad, like all they’re looking at is the spelling mistakes and the continuity errors and whatnot, but they don’t want to talk about how the tribe is a racist caricature of an indigenous nation that the heroic clans can impose their own ways of life upon because they’re too underdeveloped to know what’s best, or the way women are almost always only given depth through proximation to their male protagonists or portrayed as selfish and unruly for the same actions male characters are painted sympathetically for. like my mind just keeps going back to that time when people were pissing their pants over whitestorm being mentioned in the allegiances of leopardstar’s honor twice or something but the moment someone was like “kind of wish this fandom talked about the racism more” suddenly it’s all oh this community is always so negative oh it’s just a silly little book series about cats oh people are so sensitive for being upset that terms like “medicine man” are re-appropriated for some dipshit’s fantasy cat book series. like… if this fandom truly wants to believe it puts out better content than the source material, then that will have to come with understanding that our content isn’t infallible or above criticism either. listen, learn, and put effort into changing the way you curate things instead of just shrugging off everything and doubling down with “you’re too sensitive, and it’s not like the books are any better!”
