pre-2015 it did slightly bother me to hear critiques of the push for gay marriage as "normative" not because i strictly disagreed with the finer points but because it did miss out on like spousal privilege in stuff like courts money hospital visitation etc. not that i approve of those being exclusive to marriage obviously like that's pretty fucked up.

but anyway it was still super predictable that a) focusing on marriage would detract from other issues and b) as is now proven. the second same sex marriage was legalized liberals all completely forgot that we were in a fight. hence the huge pushback & anti-trans stuff being largely unopposed

all that is to say i think shameless was right in layering fake gay frank over the saddest parts of the ian/mickey plot. what a direct way to say "why the FUCK are people so exclusively focused on marriage while conversion therapy is legal" & Still because of who frank is mentioning the legal advantages of marriage.

the fact that ians family went to the military jail and discussed his bipolar disorder solely because they didnt want him to go to prison and they knew he wouldnt heal in there (especially since fiona had just gotten out of her own incarceration, and mickey had plenty of experience in the system as well), but he took it as a personal failure to be mentally ill - that they were pitying him and treating him like a difficult child who will never grow up to be a functional adult - and thats why he had monica pick him up. the fact that ian thought his loved ones didnt respect him when in reality they were doing everything they could to bring him back home with them where he belonged, but he was so blinded by his self-hatred that he couldnt understand why they were doing what he thought was a humiliation ritual for the entire us military to see, officially and embarrassingly ending the only career he ever wanted to pursue. the fact that he ran to monica because he felt alone and scared, and all she accomplished was solidifying his belief that he would never amount to anything because of his illness

#word #it makes me nuts that mickey is the person there who can see that ian is embarrassed and he chooses to say Nothing #because saving face for ian would mean saying no he's not crazy he's normal. Which would endanger his freedom #so much there... differences in what it means to look out for someone.#the contrast between fiona's style of barreling through for The Best Outcome in her panic #-> mickey as a much more emotionally sensitive person.#what it is that ian is seeking in a relationship from what he doesn't get at home.#sorry mr achilles i still like the breakup i like how it fits with this #bitches be like that's a great episode of one of my favorite shows. maybe the best. i can't watch it the whole way though because of the #acute mental distress it causes me
