How many Russian comments are there really under Måneskin’s music videos?

If you’ve ever been in the comment section of Måneskin’s music videos on YouTube, you’ve probably noticed either a) an overwhelming amount of Russian comments, or b) an overwhelming amount of people talking about the amount of Russian comments.

This isn’t super surprising, considering that Russian is one of the most used languages on the Internet. But how many Russian comments are there really on these videos? I have seen guesses in the comments ranging from 50% to 99%, but I was wondering: how close are these to the truth?

So, I did what any Måneskin fan who is also studying computer science would do: I wrote a Python script to calculate the percentage of Russian comments under Måneskin videos.

Using the Youtube Comment Search Chrome Extension (link), I downloaded all 86,726 comments on the I Wanna Be Your Slave music video as of Oct 11 2021 23:37:31 GMT-0400. Then, I wrote a script using the langdetect library (link) to detect the language of each comment and add up the results.

Here’s a pie-chart of the results:

For sake of readability, I only included the top 15 languages; the rest are included under “Other”. The “Unidentified” category represents comments with no language content, such as comments consisting of only emojis, timestamps or links.

Not surprisingly, English is the most used language representing 31.6% of the comments. Second is Russian with only 15.1% of all the comments-- less than one sixth. Pooling together all the languages using the Cyrillic script that the library can detect (Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian and Macedonian), that value increases slightly to 18.9%. So, even under the assumption some may very possible have that Cyrillic automatically means Russian, that’s only around one fifth of all comments. A significant amount, I’ll admit, but much less than half.
