I don't think any of you know what Cool Japan is beyond, like, the buzzword people use to justify whatever conspiracy theory de jour. You can look up where the money went for Cool Japan Inc., a Japanese governing body with annual reports.

Old Gainax sure housed a lot of right-wingers…
Before Daicon Film became Gainax, there’d been a controversy surrounding their Super Sentai parody Aikoku Sentai Dai Nippon - a satire of the Russo-Japanese war where the villain was communism. The people involved have since denied the nationalism claims they’d received as a result of the film (x) yet the title translating to "Patriotic Squadron Great Japan” and its exaggerated portrayal of Japanese cultural elements (e.g., characters named after kamikaze, harakiri, sukiyaki, geisha, and tempura) could be seen as mocking Japanese nationalism or trivializing sensitive cultural symbols. Regardless of the intent at the time, thought it’d be worth mentioning when you take how several people involved with this film and founding members of the company itself have since openly displayed racist and nationalistic tendencies into account.
Hideaki Anno (a founding member of Gainax) and some of the works he’s directed such as Gunbuster and his 2016 film Shin Godzilla have been the subject of nationalism and imperialism apologia accusations, though these are subject to debate. Plenty of people have also raised eyebrows at Anno’s all-time favorite film being The Battle of Okinawa, having watched it over 100 times and the antisemitism in Neon Genesis Evangelion - which he directed, is also a problem. It’s also worth mentioning that he collaborated with Japan’s nationalistic Liberal Democratic Party to help promote Japan’s Cool Japan image (x)- and please believe me when I say no left-wing creative would support Cool Japan, it's a very partisan policy and the communist/SDP have a pledge to remove it due to tax waste.
And I’ll let this speak for itself:

Toshio Okada (co-founder of Gainax) runs a YouTube channel where he sometimes engages in the spreading of netouyo sentiment:
Yoshiyuki Sadamoto’s (another founding member, key animator, mangaka & character designer of Neon Genesis Evangelion) nasty remarks about a Korean comfort woman statue are already well-known but it’s worth mentioning (x).
Yasuhiro Takeda (another founding member) is a big Trump and anti-LGBT lawmaker Mio Sugita supporter, he’s also expressed xenophobic views on Twitter:

Shunji Suzuki (One of the main animators for old Gainax works and now currently Gundam GQuuuuuuX) is a vocal Trump supporter and openly mocks anti-war and pro-Palestine protestors (x).
Kuboyama Eiichi (another key animator for old Gainax) running cover for lawmaker Mio Sugita's recent racist scandal over Ainu folks appearing at the UN in full uniform (x). He’s also shared racist talking points about ‘DEI’:

thinking about the cultural phenomenon of "The One Good Anime", a title that shifts every couple seasons and is universally applied to something that isn't really all that special in the grand scheme of things besides catching the eye of a lot of normies all at once.
genre and quality vary significantly, but The One Good Anime can typically be identified through statements like "this is the only good anime !" (read: this is the only anime ive bothered to actually watch and i assume all the others are shit), "this is the savior of anime !" (read: a lot of people are watching it and for some reason i think that means something), and "finally, an anime that doesn't do all of that anime bullshit !" (read: i am racist).
#dungeon meshi fans were like this even before the anime aired yes#and witch hat atelier fans are also very much like this without an anime

Steel Ball Run anime announcement on the April the 12th 2025!!!!
The official JJBA anime announced an event that’ll take place next year on April the 12th and even provided an English translation, which isn’t something they usually do.

In April 2024, an animator for Stone Ocean tweeted out the following and deleted his tweet when it started gaining traction:
