The two most life-changing concepts I ever read about disability that fundamentally helped me better understand the situations of many disabled people are:

1. Every person requires assistance of some kind and living “independently” means different things to different people regardless of disability.

2. A number of things we consider “normal” like eyeglasses are literally disability accommodations, they’re just accommodations that are commonly used and socially accepted.

When everyone rallies around you, believe them. Don’t question why so many people love you that much. Many is one person, many is fifty people. Many is enough. Disregard that quote you love about not being a tree, you have roots. Deep ones that can grow thousands of miles. You are still a tree. You are shelter, you are wise. You lose branches and don’t die, you change with the seasons. Sometimes someone will say they love you and all that means is they want to see how little they have to give and still have you stay. How much of their hurtful past they can put on your shoulders and still have you raise your arms to hold them. If someone uses you as vindication for a past of feeling unlovable, this is no reflection of you. You love without holes and hopes to heal bruises. You do not love too much, you do not love with too high expectations, you do not love too persistently. You love. That is all. That is everything. You are no ones mirror. Forgiveness comes in waves and it does not matter how gentle or rough it reaches the shore. It matters only that all waves eventually meet it. The closer to the ocean you are, the farther you will be from what you’ve always known. It is okay to want both. Call home. When it rains and you feel like crying, don’t worry about why. It is not the worst thing in the world to think it’s that sad and that beautiful. If you feel like giving up on something, look at a picture of yourself from when you were two. If there’s no peace to be found in things as they are, look harder.

A good friend told me once that he wants a girlfriend he can keep quiet with, someone whose presence wouldn’t make him feel pressured to sustain a conversation all the time.

As someone who puts weight on conversations, this was a fresh take for me. I realized he was right, silences also play a big part in relationships. Being able to have comfortable, meaningful silence is as telling about a relationship as good conversational flow.
