The problem with the parable of the pelican, Marm reflected for the thousandth time, was simple. None of the stories ever bothered to say what happened next. The dead chicks, the awful remorse, the vulning, the sacrifice, and then—what? It was a subtle flaw, but it wore on her, in these days of darkness. There was little enough else to think of.
Or: Marm traded for Avid’s place in Limbo. But there’s no ending there.
Sequel to The Pelican. Read that first. It’s very good.
Happy SBK day, everyone :)

I want to personally thank Cubfan135 for handing ZombieCleo a nuke. You’ve given this power to the correct person who won’t use it for evil ever.

Every kingdom is a home. Every pair has answered “what is home to you?”
Jungle says it’s green everywhere you look, ancient structures with lush plants growing in and around it. The view from the canopy tops, countless vines and relaxed bridges, bouncy moss and puddles of water to splash around in, a cozy treehouse and warmly-lit cave. A unique tree shimmering with mystic lights, complete with an endless waterfall: coming from nowhere, going nowhere. It’s full of life, old and new. It’s embracing the wild and letting strange magic reside along them. Home is carefree
Acacia says the void is still here, it says hello from the triangle shaped holes in the floor, the kingdom looks back at you with rare shapes—and proudly so. There’s impressive machinery, it shines with copper and compliments their warm color palette. There’s floating platforms, suspended rooms, bridges that twist, walkways that require paying attention to the floor- unless you’d like to say hello to the void too. It’s a world of its own. It’s an inconvenience for everyone not used to it. Home is unapologetic
Birch says “come on in”, to the giant hollowed tree where resources line the walls of a modern interior, to the greenhouse where a variety of plants and decorations make it look beautiful and peaceful, to the game platforms where you’ll definitely have a fun time. A singular, comically long birch tree winds around the server and catches everyone’s attention. Its roots are in a lively kingdom. It guides you to their door. Home is alluring
Nether says its presence is felt from far away, with colossal towers that pierce the clouds, a mighty castle reinforced with materials from the hell dimension, lava waterfalls pouring into a bubbling lake and spilling into the void. It’s a presence felt from deep within, where a fungal cave coats the inside of a mountain and mushrooms seep into the open air, where the comfort of warm mushroom soup can fill your belly at a humble looking shop. Resident mobs are there to greet you with fungi rooted in their bodies…or perhaps it’s fungi greeting you with friendly hosts. Home is a statement
Dark oak says it’s a sight to behold, look at the slice of world that goes from bedrock to build height, look at the gigantic tube of wood and lights that encapsulate their living space, look at the abundance of farms, valuable materials at their possession. It’s grand and spacious. It’s impossible to miss. Home is an exhibit
Cherry says there’s a place for you here, in one of the many customized apartments, in the beautiful shops where you’ll find just what you need, in the rooftops decorated with fairy lights and potted flowers and picnic chairs, in the shadowed alleys where you can slither out of sight, in the sewers where you can get lost in a maze. It’s colorful and bright. It beckons you to look around and see how joyful this place is meant to be. Home is community convenient
Spruce says the natural world never left, an eternal winter drapes over all the eye can see, from a cozy cabin to a massive mountain, from an icy lake to a soaring airship, hike trails and tall woodland and sturdy bridges, snowflakes dance their way to the ground and decorate the islands with a twinkle and shine. Worlds formed by human and hologram hands are concealed within; mining tunnels with the endless sound of construction tools, a distinctive trading hall with gossiping and chattering in each corner, the quiet expansion of space in a relatively tiny pocket— little planets proudly representing each kingdom. Sculk crawls in the shadows below and latches onto the organic and machine. It’s more than it appears to be. It draws you in with details big and small. Home is charming
End says another dimension has nestled into another sky, grand statues overlook a long bridge that guides visitors to this area of the void, and oh— one of them has a penguin face with a Santa hat— how silly. Cone islands hold fractions of chorus forests, glimpses of green terrain, a sanctuary of the beginning land protected by an amethyst roof. Their end city branches upwards with architecture influenced by the outside world, multihued ships idly float around, an outpost tower contains the gateway to second home, and would ya look at that— another goofy face is plastered over the official sign. Home is whimsical
Mangrove says nothing is tamed here, from the bridges and walkways that levitate in broken pieces, from the curtains of vines that reach for the void, from roots and mud and glimmering rocks scattered almost everywhere. A sacrifice pit for throwing away valuable items, a majestic tower for safekeeping a library of spells and secrets and scribbled notes. Underneath it all, a rim of floating boulders and shards of gemstone. Crystals dwell as a narrative heart. It’s peaceful and deadly. It goes against the grain. Home is otherworldly
Bamboo says there’s mementos of your neighbor’s kingdoms. Various trees are nestled within long stalks of bamboo, and no matter how different they look it never feels intrusive. Stylish stairways and hike trails welcome people to wander in, but defensive walls keep them away from the soul of the island. It showcases the beauty of nature. It guards secrets. Home is preserving
The void once held nothing, then it held everything
Every tree, every foundation, every roof, every bridge to 10 kingdoms where it held every memory in blue skies, drawn out twilights, and short nights. Every experience and desire shaped the infrastructure of a world where some visited, and some stayed forever
And every home will speak of something new, when the void holds nothing again
