Experience the Uncommon: Manhattan College students present their research in London, UK
Three students travelled with Angel Pineda, Ph.D., professor of mathematics, to the Annual Meeting of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) in London, England.
All four students are funded through a grant from the National Institute of Health. Two students are presenting our group’s research in a conference where most students presenting are getting their Ph.D. 
Alexandra O'Neill ’22 will be presenting in person, Tavianne Kemp '22 will be attending in person and Joshua Herman ’21, ’23 (M.S.) will be presenting in person. Marcus Wong ’21, ’23 (M.S.) is attending virtually. All four students are co-authors in the presentations.

Lois Harr Earns Scholarship for NETWORK celebration
Lois Harr, MA, adjunct instructor in the department of Religious Studies, was awarded a scholarship to attend the 50th Anniversary celebration of NETWORK, the Catholic Social Justice Lobby.
The three day event in Washington, DC, provided trainings in advocacy and facilitation on issues such as tax reform, racial justice, and criminal legal system reform. The participants then celebrated NETWORK’s 50 years with dinner and dancing.
The 100+ people in attendance will participate in virtual lobby days in their home states in May.

Book Prize and Guest Lecture of Julie Leininger Pycior

Julie Leininger Pycior, Ph.D., professor emeritus of history, was awarded the prize in the “history” category given jointly by the Association of Catholic Publishers/Catholic Media Association for her latest book, Dorothy Day, Thomas Merton, and the Greatest Commandment: Radical Love in Times of Crisis.
Also, she delivered the invited online lecture “Mexican Americans and the Legacy of the Mutualista Movement” sponsored by the Mexican American Civil Rights Institute.  The video recording of the presentation is available here.

The 2022 Metropolitan ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) Student Conference, was held recently at Rutgers University.  Sal Cinquemani ‘22 won the First Place at the Mead Student Paper competition.

Pamela Chasek Awarded 2022 Distinguished Scholar Award
Pamela Chasek, Ph.D., professor of political science, was awarded the 2022 Distinguished Scholar Award by the Environmental Studies Section (ESS) of the International Studies Association at its annual conference in Nashville, Tennessee. 
As one of her colleagues said: “Pam’s passion for global environmental negotiations is infectious. She brings to life the twists and turns, dramatic statements, and subtle shifts that characterize negotiations. Fortunately for ESS scholars, she shares her remarkable enthusiasm and energy through academic work, teaching resources, and the Earth Negotiations Bulletin for the betterment of our scholarship and environmental governance.”

Robert Geraci Publishes Latest Book
Robert M Geraci published his latest book, Futures of Artificial Intelligence: Perspectives from India and the United States, with Oxford University Press. The book is the outcome of historical and ethnographic research with scientists and engineers in Bangalore, India. 
Research for the book was funded by Fulbright-Nehru research awards in 2012-13 and 2018-19.

Electrical & Computer Engineering Students and Faculty Spearhead IEEE International Conference
Students and faculty from Manhattan College’s department of Electrical & Computer Engineering are spearheading a special session on STEM Education and Research, in conjunction with the IEEE International Conference on Imaging Systems & Techniques (IST 2022) and the International School of Imaging.
IST 2022 will be hybrid event, taking place from June 21-23, 2022 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. At IST 2022, experts from all over the world will meet to trigger an in-depth discussion of imaging methodologies and its applications shaping the future.
The IST 2022 STEM Education and Research Program brings together undergraduate students with experts from academia, industry and government, for an active discussion on the latest advances and technologies in STEM disciplines.
The goals of this session are to: 1) share current research questions, cutting-edge technologies, methodologies, and findings within disciplinary and interdisciplinary STEM contexts; 2) promote local, state, and national STEM education collaborations and partnerships; and 3) provide networking opportunities across stakeholder communities.

Prof. Eric De Sena Raising Funds for Ukrainian Refugees
Eric De Sena, an adjunct faculty member in the history department at Manhattan College, is raising funds for Ukrainian refugees through the sale of his song, “Fear and Hope.”
This award-winning song (A Song for Peace in the World, 2000) was released as a limited series CD in Europe. The song recounts the fear and hope of children in war zones. De Sena will donate the proceeds to charities such as CARE, UNICEF, and International Rescue Committee. The song costs $1.50 on Bandcamp:

Erin Leigh-Gallop Honored by the Society for Public Health Education
The Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) has presented Erin-Leigh Gallop with the SOPHE 2022 Graduate Student Research Paper Award for her dissertation entitled, “The Design and Evaluation of the Asthma Knowledge Test for Parents as a Brief E-Health Online Intervention: Predictors of Mothers’ Asthma Knowledge and Self-Efficacy to Manage Childhood Asthma.”
Dr. Gallop, a visiting assistant professor of public health in Manhattan College’s department of kinesiology, earned her doctorate in Health Education at Teachers College-Columbia University in May 2021.

Maryann Moriarty '19 (M.S.) Writes for the Educators Room
Maryann Moriarty ‘19 (M.S.) is in her 14th year teaching in New York City. She holds an M.S. in Special Education from Manhattan College, an Advanced Certificate in School Building Leadership from Manhattan College and an M.S. in Education from Lehman College. Moriarty values her connections with her students and is passionate about science, literacy and kindness all around.
She is currently writing for the Educators Room, based in Atlanta. She recently published a piece on teaching science to children in early education.

Eric De Sena Publishes in British Archaeological Reports Series
Eric C. De Sena, Ph.D., an adjunct professor for the Liberal Learning Program, is pleased to announce the publication of conference proceedings. 
“Africa, Egypt and the Danubian Provinces of the Roman Empire: Military and religious interactions” (2nd - 3rd centuries AD), edited by Ștefana Cristea, Călin Timoc and Eric C. De Sena, has been released by Archaeopress in their series, British Archaeological Reports. 
The volume contains peer-reviewed articles that explore issues pertaining to the interactions between the African and Danubian provinces of the Roman Empire, based upon archaeological, epigraphic, and historical information.
