Basic lineart to kickstart your manta-bae design! Above are some examples made with this base! You can use a standard thick pen brush to add onto this base (brushes like Syrup and Studio Pen are good choices for Procreate users). The 2nd picture design is done without adding any extra linework!

This base can be modified using pre-made options such as: 2 body shapes (with 4 chest add-ons each), 6 eyes, 4 head shapes, 4 head mantle, 4 neck mantle, 4 back mantle, 12 head fins (mouth, sides, top), and 10 tails!

• Basic Traits

Manta-Bae

This is the form a manta-bae could poof into once they mature into an adult! You can freely adopt ANY other trait into your manta-bae character beyond the specified basics below! Go crazy with markings and colors!

Anatomy — Manta-baes stand upright on two legs, with a human-like body structure. Their heights ranges from 100-230cm tall! Their arms are imbued within their fins, resembling the wings of a manta ray. This unique feature of theirs is called a mantle. Their mantles usually start around the sides of their head to the upper sides of their neck and diverges from their humanoid forms around their shoulder blades and armpits. They have tails that begin at the end of their mantles. On top of that, they have cephalic fins around their face or mouth and can be upright or droop downwards. Their skin has a sleek, glistening texture to aid in swimming. Nubby feet are not necessary!

Coating — A coating of slime or mucus on their skin is optional. It makes them slippery and is especially convenient for manta-baes who find themselves spending more time underwater. A manta-bae’s slime coating is much more resistant to oils than real life manta rays, so it’s fine to be touched by anyone of any skin!

MANTA FACT: The mucus coating in real life manta rays protects them by repelling bacteria. Oils from your hand could harm this mucous coating and make the manta rays more susceptible to infections or the rapid peeling of skin. So, hands off the rays!

Manta-Baby

All manta-baes have a manta-baby form but not all manta-babies have a manta-bae form. This is the form manta-baes assume before maturity. Basically a mini manta-bae. When mature, they can choose to poof into this form whenever they feel like it. You can freely adopt ANY other trait into your manta-baby character beyond the specified basics below! Go crazy with markings and colors!

Anatomy — Manta-babies, as the name suggests, is a manta-bae in baby form. I personally call it the pancake form. These forms resemble real-life manta rays but are more reminiscent of plushie manta rays than their actual living counterparts. Their disc length (this refers to the length between their mouth and the base of their tail) ranges from 10-30cm.

MANTA FACT: Rays in real life can range from 60cm (Mobula diabolis) to 700cm (Manta birostris) wide. Big girls!!!

Coating — All manta-babies possess a coating of slime in this form whether or not their manta-bae forms have it too or not.

General Rules

Be a kind and respectful human being! In general!

You are free to call your characters a manta-bae without the need of interacting with the community at all (MantaList, TH world, or Discord).

You can choose to design a character using the body plan of a manta-bae without stating that your character is a manta-bae

Linking back to the species' Tumblr or ToyHouse World when putting your manta-bae character on sites like ToyHouse, ArtFight, etc. is not necessary but greatly appreciated!

This is an open species where anyone could create a character with a species under the name of "Manta-Bae". Please understand that the species' moderators could not truly control how these creators behave and are not reliable for damages outside the team's realm of moderation.

The team behind the creation of the "Manta-Bae" species will not tolerate hateful acts such as bullying, harassment, witch-hunting, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and other similarly hurtful or discriminatory performances within the community. Enacting such acts would result in immediate removal from the species' communities.

Breaking any of the rules listed here could result in your removal of presence from the species’ masterlist (MantaList), ToyHouse world, or Discord, and or getting reported plus blocked indefinitely.

MantaList Rules

The owner of a manta-bae character listed in the MantaList can ask to take down the entry of their character at any time for any reason!

The moderator can also ignore or take down submissions or entries for any improper practice on the submitter's behalf in terms of submission or behavior.

Creating a manta-bae form of an established original character that you own is a-okay! If your design is obtained from someone else, only manta-bae designs that are approved by the original designers themselves are okay to submit.

Crossbreeding with other established open/closed species is a-okay but only open species are welcome for submission to the MantaList.

Creators or moderators of an open species may request a MantaList entry to be taken down if the character conflicts with their rules.

Designs and characters that are based on a character or setting from an existing copyrighted franchise cannot be submitted into the MantaList.

Traced art or Al art is not welcome in the MantaList. Any entries discovered containing said content will be refused or taken down.

A: Go ahead!!! It’s an open species so you don’t have to worry about MYOs or anything! Just go get designing! Don’t want to draw from scratch? Well, it’s your lucky day! We have bases! Grab them here!

Q: Can I just make a manta-baby? Without the humanoid form?

A: Absolutely. You can even submit them into the MantaList too!

Q: Are there manta rarities?

A: Nuh-uh. Every manta-bae out there have their own unique traits, selves, and quirks! All of them equally valuable.

Q: Can I make my manta-bae a hybrid of this [real-life animal]?

A: Of course! It's even approve-able for the MantaList as it counts as a classic manta-bae. Swag!

Q: Can I make my manta-bae a hybrid of this [established open/closed species]?

A: Go ahead! Whether you can submit them into the MantaList depends, though. Scroll down for more details on MantaList submission.

Q: Can I put my manta-bae in [this universe]?

A: The manta-bae species doesn't have its own laid-out lore or universe as of now so yes! Even if it gets its own universe, you can still plop them anywhere you'd like :3

A: Me (@anonymocha). :D Hello! Thanks for checking this species out, by the way. The idea came to me at exactly 3 AM on Friday, June 30 GMT+7. I kid you not. I still have the manta-bae concept sketches I made at that hour here.

Q: What’s the MantaList?

A: Where the approved manta-baes are showcased! They are categorized by classic manta-baes, manta-babies, and manta-baes that are crossbred with another open species!

Q: Do I have to submit my manta-bae for approval?

A: No, it is completely optional! The MantaList is here simply for archival/logging and showcase reasons!

Q: What are the conditions for submitting a manta-bae into the MantaList and how?

A: Your manta-bae has to be an original manta-bae character with a ToyHouse page and be tagged properly with any filters that your character may need. Here are specific manta-bae submission requirements based on category:

Classic Manta-Baes: Classic manta-baes should at least follow the basic traits of manta-baes, having cephalic fins, the iconic mantle, and a manta-baby form! Any other traits are welcome!

Manta-Babies: These types of manta-baes are basically classic manta-baes without the manta-bae (adult/humanoid) form. Submit them into this category if your manta-bae is a minor or never poofs out of their manta-baby form.

Crossbred Manta-Baes: If your manta-bae is a hybrid of another species, you can only submit it if the species is not a semi-closed/closed species (like real-life animals and open species, for example). The mods of an open species can request to take down an entry if your character conflicts with their rules, though! This category of manta-baes doesn't need to fill every basic manta-bae traits as long as it resembles the species in some way, humanoid or pancake.

I request your manta-bae’s icon to be SFW and free of common sensitive elements (gore, body horror, nudity, sexual themes, flashing lights, etc) because it will be showcased in a public database for everyone to see! You can submit a MantaList icon pic that is different from your manta-bae’s ToyHouse icon! It must be 200x200 pixels! To submit your manta-bae, fill in this form.

Q: Can my manta-bae be spooky, have elements of gore, body horror, etc?

A: It's YOUR manta-bae. Feel free to incorporate any element you like into YOUR design! However, your manta-bae cannot be submitted for approval into the MantaList unless your manta-bae is tagged properly for the respective community filters (this applies to any other potentially sensitive content). That aside, be chaotic, be cringe, be free. Please!

Q: Can I make a manta-bae fan OC of this [franchise]?

A: It's Splatoon, isn't it? Again, it's YOUR manta-bae. Place them into ANY universe you want! I encourage it! I can't accept fan characters of huge franchises (like Nintendo) into the MantaList, though! Sorry!!!
