"On Sunday 3 September 2023, 7NEWS ran a Spotlight segment on de-transitioning. Within the segment they shared videos and images of transgender and non binary people without their consent, wrongfully implying that they regret transitioning." ~ Olivia G.

As some of you know, I'm Australian, and yet I had no idea such a violent segment had aired until I saw a post made by the parent of an 18-year-old trans girl on Reddit, speaking of the transphobia their daughter faced at TAFE the day after the segment aired. This petition was linked in the comments.

Olivia is not the only person who not only had their images and videos shared without notice or consent, but also had the context completely removed and spun into a false story of the creator regretting their transition. Grace Hyland, the trans daughter of an Australian actor, had this happen to her as well for the very same segment.

"I transitioned at 13 and do not regret it at all," ~ Ms Hyland.

The preview was then changed, but they still failed to seek permission from the other trans people they stole content and put words in the mouth of. Not only is it disingenuous, it's also not journalism. And not only because of the lack of consent, the segment was also full of misinformation and lies about transistioning in Australia (The segment claimed kids as young as 12 are transitioning. You can only start at age 14, after seeing numerous psychologists. Reassignment surgery is also pretty much never done. Etc.)

Please sign the above petition at the very least. If you have the energy, please also submit a complaint to the Australian Press Council and the Australian Communications and Media Authority.

Read this before donating to ao3

In light of AO3 once again asking for donations, I went digging for their 990 Form, the tax form required for all 501©(3) nonprofits to file. I was only able to access their forms from 2016-2018 and all of my information is pulled from the 2018 form, their 2018 budget, and their 2020 budget as posted on their official website. 

So first off, this was a statement made at the bottom of their 2018 990 form, though after some digging, I was unable to verify that the organization posts their 990 form explicitly on their website. While I was able to cross reference with their budget for 2018, the corresponding year, there was no mention of their 990 tax form. 

These images come from two separate statements, their 2022 projected budget with 2021 numbers for comparison. They projected needing $416k to run AO3 alone in 2021, but only spent $180k. While this in and of itself isn’t a bad thing, as projections are off all the time for businesses and it should be considered a good thing that they went under budget, what’s important is the second image, which is a breakdown of AO3 costs from 2019 and 2020.

Under server hosting and hardware, they spent about $70k in 2020 and $61k in 2019, a far cry from the hundreds of thousands I see people talking about them needing to maintain servers. Depreciation is actually where most of that money is going, which accounts for the deprecation of assets in their care.

I do find that $12.9k number for administration and management suspicious, as on their tax forms nobody gets paid, there are no benefits being paid out, and all board members work less than 10 hours a week. They also do not have a written agreement about their duties or perform a formal assessment of their performance. While in the grand scheme of things $13k is a small chunk of what they make, the fact that they are not forthright about where it is going raises some red flags. And before anyone says that they’re using the money for legal fights:

No they aren’t. I also didn’t see anything relating to the in-kind expenses they reported in their budget for any year. 

These are the only reviews on their GuideStar.org page, one stating that when they left the organization in 2014, a volunteer had been made to work 60 hour weeks of professional coding without compensation and that the oversight on volunteers at the time of the review was shaky at best, as well as the lack of transparency on if board members were being financially compensated at all for travel expenses (something I was able to corroborate in the tax forms but am unable to add screenshots due to image limit).

To end this out, nonprofits absolutely can make profits and pay their employees. The profits must go back into maintaining and improving the organization in order to maintain their nonprofit status, and with how ao3 hasn’t exactly updated their site in a major way in the better half of a decade and the fans over inflate server costs, that extra money has to be going somewhere. At the end of 2018 they had $1,073,810 in net assets that they could pull from if they don’t meet their donation goal. That’s over a million dollars from 4 years ago, and in 2020 their expenses were about $560k and they ended the year with over $1.7mil in cash.

Ask yourself where your money is going, if they repeatedly are making more than they need and have more than enough for a rainy day fund, don’t pay their employees, and have (at least in the past) exploited volunteers for their work.

Hi, everyone! It’s Mod Pudge!

As you guys know, this blog is, for the most part, no longer active and now is used more for archiving. That being said, we still have some anons coming in every day to tell us the latest news on the people we have a history with (for lack of a better term). 

However, since Mod Shay and I have both agreed that continuing the mindless back-and-forth is fruitless and, let’s face it, not really needed, we have made the decision to permanently close our inbox. This is to further seperate us from the discourse as well as help maintain this blogs archival status.

If something major happens, of course we’ll post about it, as well as important reblogs pertaining to human rights issues and the like.
