Decoding Chinese Medicine: A Simple Guide to the Science of Acupuncture
James Reston, a journalist who travelled to China with Nixon in 1972, wrote a report in the New York Times describing how the doctors in Beijing used needles to ease his abdominal pain after surgery. This exotic seeming therapy was acupuncture, and Reston’s piece introduced this medicine to the Western world. While acupuncture and similar traditional therapies have been in use around the world for thousands of years, modern research has yet to fully explain the mechanism of action. Many gold standard research studies now exist demonstrating acupuncture as safe and clinically effective in treating a number of health conditions. The question of how acupuncture works is still not fully answered but much progress has been made.
Ancient Chinese medical texts define a type of life force energy within all of us called Qi (pronounced as ‘chee’). This vital energy is said to be the source of all physical body functions, from muscle flexibility to blood flow to digestive processing. Qi is the element that keeps out body warm, defends us against illness, and gives us the energy for all our daily activities. This force circulates through the body, much like the blood, in channels, sometimes called meridians. If there is a blockage in the circulation of Qi within the body, then pain and disease can arise. But Western medical theory has no definition or understanding of Qi- so what does all this mean?

Acupuncture involves the painless insertion of very fine needles into specific points along the meridian system where Qi is said to travel. From a Western anatomy perspective, the map of acupuncture channels and points closely overlaps with major nerve and blood vessel pathways. Insertion into one of these points stimulates activity along the nerve and increases circulation to the local area. Acupuncture also activates the secretion of beneficial “feel good” hormones (endorphins) in the body. This action on the regulation of hormone secretion is why an acupuncture session feels so relaxing and contributes to stress relief and pain management, and the reason acupuncture is so beneficial in regulating digestion and sleep.
Originating in China more than 2,000 years ago, acupuncture is known to be one of the oldest and most commonly used medical procedures in the world. Modern research continues to define the myriad of reasons why acupuncture is so clinically effective for many health conditions.
