At the beginning of Glass Sword, despite her feelings for him, Mare ultimately sees Cal as a weapon for her to use for her own purposes. And Cal sees her as the same. Their is comfort is weilding a weapon, true, but in the end it is an instrument to be used to destroy, to inflict pain.

But slowly they both begin to take comfort in the protection that a weapons lends them, that they lend each other. Slowly, Mare begins to instead see Cal as a shield, a form of protection against the world. There is still the image of war and danger, but there is now also safety in his embrace.

And finally, she accepts Cal as her shield. As her protection. He's become so woven into her soul that he's no longer simply protecting her from the hurt of the world, but against her own mind. Her own thoughts.
