Based on the ending credits, I’ve figured out which fairy tales are going to be focused in Grimm’s Notes. I’m really invested in fairy tale-based shows, so I’m doing this mostly for my own amusement. So far we’ve had.

I can’t help but notice a parallel between three shows this airing anime season. Grimm’s Notes, Endro! and Pastel Memories. While each of them falls into a slightly different genre, all of them deal with the effects that fiction has on our daily lives and how people fall into their roles within those stories. Pastel Memories probably dives the shallowest into it, since the worlds are explicitly…

My Top 3 Fall 2018 Anime

1. The Girl in Twilight

This one is actually my current front-runner. The world hopping reminds me of something like DJ MacHale’s Pendragon, crossed with a girls in battle armor show like Bubblegum Crisis or Symphogear. With Walkmen. The characters have great banter, and the commentary woven into each world has been intriguing. Never thought I’d see a beach episode combined with a discussion on how Amazon is taking over everything.

2. As Miss Beelzebub Likes It.

A slice of life fantasy that’s mostly heartwarming and slightly naughty, with a pastel aesthetic that seems at odds with it being set in hell, but is otherwise a nice, relaxing watch. It’s bit more risque than its art style suggests, but even that isn’t a total detriment, since it’s mostly in the dialogue, aside from the occasional Beel fluffy bed.

3. SSSS.GRIDMAN

I was on the fence if something like Zombieland Saga or Ms. vampire should go here, since idols and healing series are both my favorites, but as a toku nerd, I have to give credit to the show that’s overtly acknowledging its American adaptation - one that wasn’t Power Rangers - while mixing a sekai-kei anime and tokusatsu in a way that really feels like toku, even more than the various GARO anime.

That’s Ninja Captor.

Murakumo not only draws toku manga, she draws them for obscure 70s Toei shows. If this was another timeline, there’d already be a tie-in between Senran Kagura and Ninja Cap-tan.

I was expecting a reference for something more recent, like Ninninger. This is a surprise.

Though knowing Murakumo is a toku fan makes me want to team her up with Hisui.

Disappointed about Mighty Magiswords being cancelled. Sure, CN’s airing schedule is unknowable even for its most popular shows, but I’ll miss it. It felt like a show that was at a nexus of many of my interests at once. What other show could overlap Game Grumps, Some Jerk with a Camera, and tokusatsu fandom in the same place? All while being inspired by anime, the works of Jay Ward and Hanna-Barbera, and being so blissfully unaware of the fourth wall? It’s a niche thing, but it was in my niche. I enjoyed it while it lasted.

Ever since PriPara ended, I've been missing your blog entries a lot. No episodics, no nothing... I'm sad, but at the same time I'm wondering what you are up to now and if you actually watch Kiratto. If you do, what's your opinion on it? I know it's barely been 20 episodes since the show started, but asking doesn't hurt, right?

I am watching Kiratto and enjoying it, even if it’s not 100% utilizing the elements that I enjoyed about PriPara. Part of the reason why I’m not reviewing it weekly is because of the time slot change, which overlaps with way too much compared to Tuesdays, but perhaps I can do a check-in at the halfway point.

Dantalian has returned to Crunchyroll via Funimation, and I want to give it some love. This was one of my favorite shows when it was airing. The literature-themed nature of the mysteries, the Gothic atmosphere, Miyuki Sawashiro’s voice acting, the haunting opening and ending themes. It’s episodic, sure, but each individual mystery feels compelling. Worth checking out if one likes heady, atmospheric works and also cute demon girls with the power of literature.
