i think my biggest criticism of gormenghast (books 1 & 2) would be about how The Thing is destroyed and how Titus's character development relies a little too heavily on her.

The ending of Gormenghast (the 2nd book) contains my favourite use of world building that I've ever read. Spoilers under the cut!
The detailed and painterly approach to description that is used consistently throughout the series allows for the absurd or surreal to happen, whilst still feeling thoroughly grounded within the world. This culminates in the dreamy final scenes, where Gormenghast is purged but ultimately unchanged by nature. The sense that Gormenghast is the centre of the world is pushed to the extreme in an almost biblical flood that forces everyone Titus knows into an increasingly small space. The tiny world becomes even smaller and escaping Titus's duties, previously only mentally challenging, become physically impossible. His escapes into nature are halted. Fuchsia, the last tie to his world, dies. Her spirit is slowly dulled and finally killed by the cold indifference of Gormenghast - there is no hope for Titus here.
The flood is washed away and the world is left different but unchanged, therefore revealing to Titus that he must leave. It's an almost biblical purification of the world, that nevertheless results in no change to the unrelenting rituals of Gormenghast, only managing to let the future leader leave. Even as he leaves there is no description or speculation about the civilisation beyond his home - throughout book 1 & 2, it is though the world ceases to exist outside of Gormenghast and it's surrounding landscape.
