on my soapbox to bitch again. all i have to say is that im tired of two things in media that usually go hand-in-hand now: shittily done redemption arcs, and “forgive people no matter what, even if they constantly hurt you or your loved ones.”

michiruna doesn’t quite focus on these two things like other recent media that i’ve seen does, but it manages to do pretty damn well when tackling these aspects as well. while nazuna is not really a villain, she is the antagonist in michiru’s story, and i would have loved to see an entire season be dedicated to flushing out a more complex relationship between nazuna and michiru so we wouldn’t have to lose time to hastily rushing in the whole “alan sylvasta wants to eradicate beastmen” ending. the mini-redemption arc she gets feels fulfilling, and is mostly low-stakes: michiru may lose her relationship with one of the closest people in her life, but she doesn’t lose her life, her other friends/loved ones, her home, etc. nazuna doesn’t kill anybody, she doesn’t physically injure michiru, she doesn’t try to hunt her down and kill her, and nazuna on her end doesn’t lose anything michiru wouldn’t already by severing their relationship.

nazuna redemption or not wouldn’t have let beastmen kill each other due to the “disease”. michiru redemption or not wouldn’t have let nazuna be hurt or die, because that’s both how she is as a person, and she still cares about nazuna, friend or not.

also, michiru and nazuna aren’t forced to forgive each other. it’s not like they’ll die or anything if they don’t. there’s nothing in the story that demands michiru forgives nazuna, and nobody - not pingua, not mayor rose, not the bears, not mari, nina, and least of all shirou - pushes her to. likewise, nobody on nazuna’s end forces her to forgive michiru for any reason, and the way that they’re both allowed to approach and mend their relationship together is so, so refreshing. it’s what we need more of, honestly: people you’ve known and loved can hurt you, and you can still care about them without needing to forgive them.
