Lantern Rite was approaching. The streets of the cloud city are bursting with even more people than usual and everyone is excited for the beginning of the new year. Even though this event is quite successful both among humans and adepti, Xiao never really cared for such an event. As in Teyvat everything comes in a circle, good times are bound to end, as so do bad times. Praying the heavens for happiness was futile. Also because this merciless rule was set up by those very same heavens. Having experienced this truth directly, Xiao knew better than anyone else.. However, ever since that Traveler showed up, Xiao found himself changing his mind. He wasn't sure about what exactly or why at first, however, as time went by, he couldn't deny it anymore. Her name was Lost. She had eyes sparkling more than core lapis and golden hair more glistening than sunshine. With her kindness, strength and undying resolution, Xiao really thought that, if it was her, nothing could be impossible. Every time they met, Xiao felt that his burden wasn't as heavy to carry anymore. After some more, he found himself remembering the happy days together with his friends more than the sad ones and he would share those sweet memories with her, telling stories from a long gone past. There was pain, but also joy and laughter. And he wasn't alone. But in all honesty, was he still alone? Couldn't it be that the traveler, whose name was Lost, had found him?

Just like a moth by the light in the darkest night, Xiao was attracted to her, to the point that he would watch over Lost every time he sensed trouble. Although he knew better than anyone that she wouldn't need his help, he still couldn't hold himself from being there, watching from afar, just in case.

Just in case she was in danger.

Just in case she couldn't call his name.

Just in case she forgot about their promise.

Wait, she wouldn't forget it, would she?

But the more he was thinking about that, the more he was unable to shake that worry away. Just when was it the last time she called for him? And how much time has passed since she left Liyue? Of course, she was a traveler, bound to never stop wandering… But his destiny was to forever protect the land of Geo, to never forget and never leave.

What if she.. had found someone else?

That thought alone made his sight go red with anger, but also sent his heart plunging deeply in despair. Xiao sprinted into the night, vanquishing evil after evil while pondering every single possibility. He could only get going, since every single time he slept, he dreamt of her and every time he rested his eyes, they would immediately shoot up, for it seemed to him that Lost called his name.

Then, yet another night missing her, he suddenly saw it. A single lantern, floating into the starry sky. Following its direction, Xiao saw the harbor light up with colorful lights and kites of every shape and kind. A timid smile then appeared from his lips. It was that time of the year again..

She should be home soon.

“Useless”

A small mountain of scraps on fire was burning at Xiao’s feet, its foul smell spreading into the air. This was the 10th attempt of him making his own Xiao lantern. How come that those hands were so skilled in killing, but absolutely awful for crafting? And Lost even invited him to build a kite together with all these people…

The thought of him being humiliated in front of both mortals and a fellow adeptus sent a chill down his spine! Of course he wanted to join the traveler but… How could he, with that embarrassing skills of him?!

He simply could not face it!

That was why he invited her over Pervase’s temple after the rite.

Xiao sighted once more, swiftly subduing the fire to start over again. All the lanterns were already sold out for the celebration, but at least the lady had been kind enough to let him have some materials and a booklet of instructions…

If only he could manage to make at least one before dark…

The rite of lanterns was about to end. A simple and slightly crooked lantern stood motionless at his feet. Xiao had invited her over just like in the past. At that time, she happily accepted to light a lantern with him… BuBut what if she had better plans this year? Just as he was letting himself down again, he finally perceived something. The glistening aura of the stars and the scent of a thousand adventures. Lost stood behind him, slowly approaching with a steady pace. Xiao could feel her warning gaze upon his back, her soft lips parting to address him. She was alone.

Before he could hear her call his name, he turned to greet her.

“Lost. “

The Traveler shook her head, her hands resting on her hips.

“It's just as I thought! You stopped short of stepping into the city again.. “

She wasn't really scolding him, but she looked kind of disappointed. He couldn't know that she was secretly looking for him in the crowd…

“Being in the city is not the only way for me to appreciate the lights and beauty of lantern rite. “

He said in a low voice, pointing into the direction of the harbor.

“Look… Liyue Harbor lies beyond this mountain. As long as I stand at this vantage point, I may freely behold the sight of all Kites slowly ascending into the sky. “

As he was speaking, Lost quietly approached him, as if she could look better from the same position he was standing.

“For me… That is enough. “

His head turned slightly, in time to see her nod at his explanation. She looked somewhat satisfied with that answer.

“Alright. “

Xiao lowered his arm and didn't say anything for a while. Then, just before she could say something, he gathered his courage to ask her.

“I invited you here because there's something I would like to do. “

Lost’s face lit up in curiosity as he continued

“I want to release a Xiao Lantern… And I'd like you to be there for it. “

With a small gesture, a gust of wind pulled the lantern from the ground and elegantly placed it into Lost’s hands.

“Did you make it yourself?! “

She noticed. Xiao blushed vividly, turning away from her in embarrassment.

“Yes. I apologize for its crude appearance… II have little skill in that regard. “

Lost laughed a little and shook her head happily

“No! No.. It's amazing! “

As she seemed to admire the little lantern in her palms, Xiao couldn't help but let out a little sigh.

“...You are very kind, as usual. “

The moon shone brightly in the sky, as thousand of lanterns seemed ready to reach it.

Xiao made a few steps closer, then reached for the lantern. While doing so, he gently stroked Lost’s hands with his.

“Alright, it's time. “

He whispered into her ear, waiting for her to get ready. As if they were one body, they both raised their arms, letting the lantern float away in the wind. As it disappeared into the tranquil night sky, Xiao’s expression softened.

A swirling sea of lights reached for the clouds, conveying its people's hopes and desires to the heavens. It was known for a fact that gods could acknowledge one's ambitions with a blessing, but could it work for other feelings too? If that frail lantern of his could really make it up there, would the heavens finally hear him? Could it be that simple to rewrite his stars? And if that was the case.. Would he finally be free?

This thoughts made his heart flutter a little, just like the lights at the mercy of the wind. Slowly, he shifted his gaze from the sky into her golden eyes, only to meet hers. When it happened in the past, during the very same occasion, she would slowly look away, a slight veil of red covering her pale skin. However, this time she kept her eyes on him, smiling softly.

Their wishes might not have been the same, but what about their feelings? He could never ask her. The heavens might even hear him, but his karma could never disappear into thin air.

As he was about to turn away, Lost caught his attention again.

“Xiao? ”

She called in a slight whisper, her body getting closer. Their hands were still holding each other. She smiled again and gently pulled him towards her.

“Xiao. ”

She mumbled again, her face now only a whisper away from his own. Xiao wanted to say something, however he couldn't do it. Before he knew it, Lost covered his lips with hers and his own responded by tracing the borders of her mouth with a gentle kiss. Although it was their first, it felt natural as breathing air.

A long time passed before they pulled away, the warmth of their kiss still persisting as they reluctantly moved apart to stare into the beauty of the lantern rite’s sky once more.

“Lost..”

Xiao really wanted to tell her. He wanted her to know how much he loved her and admired her and thought of her, he wanted to sink into her embrace and to kiss the rest of the night away.. But he knew it could not last as of now.

They both still had a destiny to fulfill.

That warm, bright feeling of love that they kindled into their hearts could still not resist outside of it.

He took a deep breath before finishing the sentence that was left unfinished for too long already.

“... Thank you. “

Lost nodded, still smiling at him with her signature gentle smile, the one that Xiao grew to love so much. She knew that the time would come for them to convey their feelings out loud. But today, heads resting one on the other, being together was all they needed.

This is enough...

Xiao thought, his eyes finally closing peacefully beside her.

...after all… I'm bound to break and my wings are tied.

Outside your room’s window, the sun dims.

Lavender fields seem to draw upon the dusky skies, a cruel evocation to warmer, brighter days.

A time when smiles didn’t come in the tightness of your lips; in the fake crescents in your gaze; in ‘I’m okay’s when your whole world was ashen and crumbling inside.

You turn your sight away from the view, focusing instead on the darkening shadows swallowing your room.

Once a sunny place, where first kisses and sweet treats were shared with the one your heart beats for.

Now, a barren plane, registered as ‘nothingness’ in the dullness of your gaze.

Grey.

It all seems to fade into it, an intoxicating mist, snuffing out any memories colored in rose and sunlight.

The whole world is dimming.

And you’re fading into darkness with it.

Is there truly no one to pull you out, as the heavens close off in storm clouds overhead?

Then, a sound interrupts your gloomy silence.

And the clouds seem to retract.

A doorbell, ringing repeatedly.

What a hassle, you’ll have to get up now.

Why won’t they stop ringing already?

“Yeah, yeah, I’m coming, one moment, please.” You grumble, heading for the door.

You look through the intercom, and your heart drops.

Your boyfriend is at the other side of the door.

Why now? Why now that you look like a mess? Why now that you are a mess?

You don’t want him to worry about you…

“[Y/n], please…” You hear him from the other side. “Please, if you’re there, open…”

He sounds worried… You’ve heard this tone before… When his twin brother was in danger…

You just can’t ignore him.

Not when those maroon eyes of his widen, brows furrowed in concern.

So you open the door.

“Hi, Tenn…” You mumble, the lilt of your voice monotone, hair falling in front of your face, messy.

“[Y/n],” he breathes. “Are you alright?” Your lover asks, head tilting to one side, tendrils of molten moonlight hair brushing against his face at the movement.

Ah. That question. The one you always addressed with a plastered smile.

No, you’re not okay. And haven’t been for a while.

And something in you breaks a little at the tenderness in his tone.

The last stitch holding the ragged pieces of you together snaps, and you find wetness on your cheeks, a mosaic of light and dulled color in your vision when you say, voice small:

“No… I’m not… I’m not okay, Tenn…”

Shards of you fall apart, or would, if it weren’t for the warm arms that have wrapped around you.

“What’s the matter, my love?” The idol asks, one of his hands running through your hair soothingly.

You sob into his shoulder, your tears staining his coat, yet he doesn’t care.

“Everything…” You whimper. “It’s all wrong… Nothing makes sense to me anymore… Why do you even love me, Tenn?”

At your utterance of those words, his hold on you tightens.

And a bit of warmth radiates into your frozen bones.

“I love you because you’re you, my [Y/n]. Because you’re kind. Because you care about me, not only my image on stage, but me, knowing all my flaws.” His hands move to your back, tracing soothing patterns over your oversized hoodie.

“As for the things that feel wrong,” Tenn’s hands move to grab yours, a gentle flame, dancing in the colors of leaves turning to gold and crimson, beckoning you into the comfort of a familiar hearth. “Lean on me until they feel better, yeah?”

You nod, stifling a sob, your fists digging into the fabric of his jacket.

“Why don’t we lay down for a while?” Your boyfriend suggests. “Does tea and our blanket sound good?”

You nod, as he ushers you to the kitchen with him.

Tenn knows if he leaves you alone now, his feathered strings keeping you together won’t reach you.

He can’t bear to see you crumble.

He drapes his coat over your shoulders, warm hands resting on your cheeks for a moment.

And you realize then, you were shivering.

“Thank you…” You breathe, pulling the soft cloth closer to your form.

The modern angel’s lips brush against your forehead, with the tenderness of a pale rose’s petals, their lingering touch coloring the greyness of your dimmed world in shades of sunset.

The honey he adds to your jasmine tea glitters with the last sunlight of the day; your set of matching mugs takes on a hint of cherry blossom pink, lovely and delicate like the edge of your lover’s lips when you brushed powdered sugar off of them.

“Tenn?” You call him, leaning against his back, clinging to him, your hug tight, arms looping around his waist. “Can you sing for me?” You ask, voice hoarse from the tears that still linger.

The angel chuckles, turning around. He pecks your lips, delicate, the brush of feathery, snow-powdered wings, as he cradles the back of your head, bringing you closer to him.

He begins to sing.

Smile again.

And you know that, no matter how many times he’s performed it on stage, this one’s just for you.

The sun has completely dimmed now.

However, you feel as if the first rays of a new dawn were kissing your skin with every note Tenn sings.

There are no dark clouds anymore.

The sky opens.

Angel wings made of song verses envelop you.

Outside the kitchen’s window, the moon rises.

And it was true, not everyone could reincarnate in such a graceful form -  the ultimate powerful form blessed by the moon and shaped by the sea waves. The form he had learned to conceal and hate for his past sins, even though he was still his former self to pay a tribute to his home: the obscure depths of the ocean. But as he laid his emerald green gems upon you, his whole vision of the universe shifted. You were but a human - and one of those who live only enough  to taste life itself - however you were the perfect balance of beauty and perfection in his eyes. All that is to be adored  and all that is to be feared, all the rains and droughts, the thousand winds and breathless deserts lived inside of you. You were an exotic galaxy to him, a universe full of wonders, the immensity of the ocean condensed in one body and sealed with golden eyes. He didn't even notice how he was staring at you until you turned to meet his gaze. Time stopped flowing and all sounds were as if they were stolen from the whole world - the truths of life and death, revealed in one instant. But what were you doing in such a lonely place? Were you really but a mere vision? He was lost swimming in this intricate maze of thoughts before you gasped. You had been seen by none other than the high elder? of the Vidyadharas. But you couldn't have known at the time. You never saw one like him before. He was tall and gorgeous, his whole aura emitting calming yet fearsome? energies. He was dangerous but collected, just like an exotic creature. The more you tried to avert your eyes, the more you couldn't. You both were enraptured by the powerful connection of your souls. 

-So.. You're a fish or what? - 

That's what you said, at first. 

A fish? 

Normally he would never have reacted to such a nonsensical question.. However as his sharp senses felt your fear and surprise around him, he couldn't help but feel relaxed and… Amused? A quiet smile cracked on his lips, enlightening his face just long enough for you to see through his apparent seriousness. 

-What you aren't? Then…a mermaid? But you're no maid. Like, you're definitely a man. So a merman? No? - 

The more you tried and the further you strode(? from the truth, the more he couldn't help to smile. More and more, until he cracked down into a faint laugh. He couldn't remember the last time he laughed, he wasn't even sure if he ever did. 

As you were trying correctly with "dragon" this time, he leaned a bit closer, his head tilting a slight bit to let you watch carefully his horns. Everyone on the Luofu knew about the Vidyadhara. But you look just as puzzled as you were before. In fact, you were not from there at all. You just happened to be in that time and place, looking at him as he was emerging from the sea, holding your breath as the water his lean fingers caressed looked solid and smooth as silk, moving closer as pearls streamed down his cupped palms just like a precious waterfall of jewelry. And you were at least discovered. Clueless as you were about his intentions, you touched one of the colorful horns that adorned his head just like a crown. It felt strangely warm and smooth at the touch. You could have sworn that they twitched in shock, just like the eyes of the charming stranger called Dan Heng, who still didn't reveal his name. 

-What.. What are you doing?-, he stammered, trying with all his might to get ahold of his loud heartbeat.

-I… shouldn't have touched them? You seemed quite ok with approaching me in the first place.- 

Your amber eyes twinkled as you leaned closer to him in response, your breath now tickling his cherry red lips, teasing their owner. He held his breath as you smiled with gentle malice. Maybe you still had a chance of getting away with stealing conces in the forbidden land of the "never dying". He gasped, as if he was drowning in the intensity of that moment and before you both knew it, your lips came together just like magnets attract each other, your tongues dancing in perfect harmony as both of your hands went for each other's clothes. You were but strangers, however your souls didn't need an explanation. 

You got struck by his beauty from the very first glance and he was hypnotized by your puzzled yet bold aura, your fair traits and silver hair.  You both were but fireflies spiraling down the burning light of passion for each other. 

-Hmn… It's…is it.. Really? - 

He was trying to be rational and snap out of this dangerous dance, but it was way too late for that. You wouldn't let him, not now that your pearlescent skin was exposed and could feel the warmth of his fit body, twitching with Lust and desire. You shushed him with a moan full of expectation, your fingers tracing the fine borders of his mouth. You were in for it and he was too. There was no point denying that. Your mischievous tongue licked his whimpers away, as your hand was now well planted under his long, dark hair, your legs tight around his slutty waist and your intimacy pressed against his. 

-Ah… don't… Don't say anything. Just… Take me now. Mr horny horns… - 

It was such a silly thing to say, but your sweet smell and sensual aura couldn't spoil the mood. You let him go berserk on your body, biting your breasts with his sharp canines and thrusting his intimacy in you over and over, emptying the beach around you of its natural lapping as you replaced it with moans of pleasure and more, switching poses over and over. You were still on top of him, one hand tapping your spine lightly, as the other was placed unmoved on your butt. You both were dirty in body fluids and gasping for air, but you were satisfied and free. 

But you both still didn't know what tomorrow would bring. 

-We.. Will meet again right?-

You asked in a faint voice, right into his hear before slowly going for his earlobe, sucking on it lightly but still enough sensually to feel his body react under yours, that responded with a small movement, as if wanting to start your love routine again. 

-Yes. - there was no space for hesitation. His voice was firm and mature, as he slowly turned his head to kiss your forehead. - No matter where you go, I will find you. Your heart chose mine and now is yours forever to wish for-

-But… But you don't even know my name.. Or who I am.. - 

He shook his head, now shushing you back, in the same, lustful way of yours. 

-It's ok. I will find you. Tell me not your name or anything else. It's our destiny. -

And as he slowly introduced you to the profound secrets of the stars and waters and you both talked and laughed and loved each other, the morning rose upon the ivory coast. But none of you were to be found there. The proof of a fated encounter washed away by waters and winds, but the memory of it forever preserved on your bodies and minds. Yes, your encounter felt but a vision, but the sands of time were already running towards your next one. Five.. Six… the seventh wave gently brushed the sand off the shore. Nothing more was left by that time, nothing more but memories.

Another colourful year is coming to an end and what an interesting one it’s been. Of course, it hasn’t been without struggles and hardships but no year is; on the flip-side some pretty awesome things happened like me finally going on vacation in South Korea after two years of pandemic throwing a wrench in my plan. But, personally, the most impactful thing happened at the start of the year on a whim: the creation of this blog!

As a mixture of New Year’s resolution and spontaneity, sharing my work actually gave me something to look forward to and was a great creative outlet to get away from life for a few hours.
