How Does Poverty Affect Children's Health?

Drina Nongrum is a 56 years old housewife staying at Jatah village in East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya state. This village is one of the village under the primary focus area of World Vision Project, East Khasi Hills Area Development Program. She has 7 children and 2 grand children and her youngest grand child is a girl child name Kong Kong of 1 year old. When Covid-19 hit Drina’s region, the state government issued an order of complete lockdown starting from 24th March 2020.
“COVID – 19 pandemic have created havoc in my family ” says Drina Nongrum, “shops were closed essential commodities and other grocery items were depleted on the day lockdown was announced. My family did not store up grocery and other essential items and we were in complete dilemma. Our only hope was to intensify kitchen gardening as we got improved quality of vegetable seeds from World Vision India and now growing luxuriously in our kitchen garden. We water the vegetable crops everyday, clear the weeds regularly, do intercultural operation of the soils from time to time along with incorporating farm yard manure for proper growth of plants for over a month. This was our daily activity during the lockdown period. We got good yield of organic vegetables such as french beans, bitter gourd, ladies finger, chilly, carrots, lettuce, green pea and other crops.
